Hopelink is a non-profit organization that serves homeless and low income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities. Their goal is to promote self-sufficiency among these people by providing emergency and social services in:
North and East King County, Washington between the I-90 corridor to the Seattle city limits and the Snohomish County line, and from the shores of Lake Washington to the Crest of the Cascades, an area of 800 square miles.
Hopelink offers help to people in the areas of Food, Housing, Child Care, Family Development, Adult Education, Transportation, Interpreter Services, Financial Assistance, Energy Assistance, and Classes. The end result is often a story like this. That’s just one family that was touched by Hopelink – the story in numbers from just last year are awe inspiring (50,000 lives touched for starters).

We hope you had a safe 4th of July. Unfortunately, every year some people don’t. Fireworks are a lot of fun, but they can result in some really nasty burns and injuries. Since we encouraged you to blow stuff up yesterday, we thought we’d counter that by featuring a non-profit organization that helps children who endure severe burns. The Shriners Hospitals for Children do exactly that. Who are Shriners? They wear funny hats. They drive little cars in parades. They’re Freemasons. And most importantly, they help kids through their hospitals. That’s going to be our focus today, since new college grads probably aren’t too interested in being part of a fraternal organization that seems like it probably has an average age north of 60. Then again, you probably got all hot and bothered about your college’s greek organizations and secret societies.

In case you missed it in the news, Bill Gates stepped down from the helm at Microsoft on Friday. Steve Ballmer has actually been CEO of Microsoft since 2000, but now he’s really taking over as Bill Gates assumes the title of nonexecutive chairman. This means that Bill is going full time at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and maybe you should consider doing the same. With the fortune of Gates and Warren Buffett behind it, the Gates Foundation has the financial power to truly make the world a better place. Since money isn’t a problem, the Gates Foundation needs to focus on finding the right people (maybe you) and putting them on the right projects to initiate global change.

If you asked me during any week but this one, I’d tell you that I don’t drink soda. Every year during my weeklong fishing trip with my Dad to Michigan, I make an exception for Vernors ginger ale (which is called “pop” here). I love the taste, but the reason that I give up my health conscious ways is that it just wouldn’t be a trip to Michigan without Vernors. Occasionally during the other 51 weeks of the year I’m tempted to give in and try a new soda that I’ve never tried before (stuff like Coke isn’t tempting at all), and some of the main culprits are the sodas produced by Jones Soda Co. How can you not wonder what Turkey and Gravy or Berries and Cream sodas taste like?

We apologize in advance to the fans of the New England Patriots and the Memphis Tigers (and any other team that has recently failed in a Championship game), because this is going to be a little bit painful for you. How can a post about a “Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice” be painful? Because World Vision is an organization that has worked out deals with major sports leagues (like the NFL, whose jobs we’ve featured) to administer the donation of Championship paraphernalia that was produced for teams that didn’t win a championship. The NFL had to take a gamble on producing Super Bowl Winner t-shirts for a team that was 19-0 going into the big game. That gamble didn’t pay off for them, but it certainly did for the people who World Vision helps.

If you don’t know what Google is, you have no business conducting your job search online. You should be typing your resume on a typewriter and sending it by carrier pigeon. We’ve been saying it over and over, but Google is the ultimate job search tool. They’re also the ultimate employer according to Fortune Magazine. With that said, many of you know that getting a job at Google is nearly impossible, especially now that most of their campus recruiting efforts are finished.

At the beginning of the month, we wrote about entry-level jobs at Netflix, today we’re going to talk about a company that has adopted the same business model, but is radically different in what they rent. Bag Borrow or Steal is a subscription service that enables you to “borrow” designer handbags and jewelry. There’s no need to spend big bucks on an item that you’ll use six times a year, when you can instead borrow (read: rent) six different designer items that will ensure that you’re always looking trendy. Now you can be like those movie stars who wear OPA (other people’s accessories) for big events like the Oscars (which we didn’t watch last night).

What’s the job market look like for a new college grad who wants to go into the real estate industry? Craptastic. Unless you’ve got a great connection or know something we don’t (which is actually pretty likely), you can head for another industry to get some work experience or you can take a stab at Real Estate 2.0 jobs. We’ve already looked at Zillow.com as one company that has insulated itself from sub-prime woes by breaking away from the traditional real estate business model, and today we’re going to look at another one. Redfin is an online real estate brokerage. They currently operate in only 7 markets, but they’re gaining ground by offering new services to people who think a realtor isn’t worth 6% of a house’s final sale price.

Not too long ago, the only unmanned aerial vehicles were planes flown by women. Now we live in a world where planes can fly themselves. We thought we were pretty high-tech when we set up a blog, coded our own template, and figured out how to optimize our site for Google; however, the companies that design, develop, and produce autonomous aircraft put us to absolute shame.

Welcome to the first Non-Profit Weekend on One Day, One Job. Every weekend we will shift our focus to career opportunities in the non-profit sector. Everybody needs to do something to make the world a better place, so we want to do our part by bringing attention to great entry-level jobs at charitable organizations.
Did you know that eating wild salmon is the best way to save wild salmon? It seems counterintuitive, but that’s the word that Save Our Wild Salmon is trying to spread. Their goal is to restore sustainable runs of Pacific salmon with a focus on the Columbia-Snake River Basin. Unfortunately, there is a lot more action needed to save our wild runs of King, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon and Steelhead than choosing to eat wild fish, but that’s the best way for an average Joe to make a difference.
