When I was in college, I wanted nothing more than to work at Fleishman-Hillard. Renowned for their corporate culture, Fleishman-Hillard is headquartered in St. Louis, Mo., has 80 offices throughout the world, does business in more than 20 languages and has 29 practices areas. In 2008, the firm’s work and culture earned them the “Best Agency to Work For” by The Holmes Report. But their list of awards hardly stops there, including “103 Silver Anvil Awards, 90 CIPRA/SABRE Awards, and numerous other national and international awards.”
And Fleishman-Hillard doesn’t just win awards outside the organization, but also with its own employees. In 2007, 98 percent of Fleishman-Hillard employees called the firm an organization “of which they can be proud,” according to an employee satisfaction survey. Fleishman-Hillard rewards their employees in return, giving out two awards annually – the “team player” and John D. Graham – recognizing “individuals in various geographic regions for unparalleled commitment to the client, the agency and their team.” Managers also give awards at their discretion for “their heroic efforts.” I’ve known many individuals who’ve worked for Fleishman-Hillard over the years, including one of my college mentors, and I’ve heard nothing but good things.

What do financial services, home/building and healthcare have in common? All three fields can expect good things to happen when they “converge” with IMRE, a full service digital, advertising, marketing and public relations agency in Baltimore, Maryland.
Let’s start with their financial services practice. Strategically expanded in July 2008 near the beginning of our country’s economic troubles, IMRE saw an opportunity for “financial services companies to gain market share.” Did you know you can buy wedding insurance from Travelers? IMRE won this client by proposing—no pun intended—to launch a campaign on Valentine’s Day about nuptial nightmares ranging from heart attacks to blackouts to hurricanes. They won the account and reached more than 74 million people with their messages. Like most public relations practitioners, I’m not a numbers person, but I do love weddings!
The “green” market is hot right now, so it makes sense for Arxx Corporation to be included in IMRE’s home & building practice. IMRE “moved Arxx away from a product message and positioned them as a longtime leader in energy-efficient solutions.” Despite being a midsized firm with only one office location, their client list in this practice is impressive—ranging from John Deere to The Home Depot to Target.
Their final practice area is healthcare, which is also my specialty. What I like most about healthcare PR is that you feel like you’re helping people live life to its fullest with every tactic you use to reach them. IMRE’s clients in this sector mostly are nonprofit organizations, including American Red Cross, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Shady Grove Fertility.

I’m not a wine drinker, but I am a sucker for a good PR stunt – especially when it’s related to jobs. I never covered “The Best Job in the World” (a job in Australia as an “island caretaker”), but I figured that you guys wouldn’t want to miss out on the chance to land “A Really Goode Job.” What am I talking about? Murphy-Goode Winery, which is based in Sonoma Wine Country, is looking for “someone (maybe you) who really knows how to use Web 2.0 and Facebook and blogs and social media and YouTube and all sorts of good stuff like that — to tell the world about our wines and the place where we live: the Sonoma County Wine Country.” I believe the official title for the job is Wine Country Lifestyle Correspondent. Anyway, it’s the opportunity of a lifetime, and even if there’s a miniscule chance that you’ll be the one selected out of thousands to get the job, it’s worth a shot, right?

While I certainly wouldn’t name Wisconsin as a hotbed for public relations jobs, Weidert Group in Appleton would be a fantastic place to launch your career—particularly if you’re interested in social media. In addition to social media, you can gain experience in many different areas, ranging from public relations planning, execution, and training to event planning/management. Like many small agencies, Weidert Group is a tight-knit environment that values its team members. They seek people “who exhibit both strategic and imaginative thinking; whose perspectives have been influenced by quality education, significant responsibilities, and notable accomplishments; who demonstrate motivation, drive, and passion for their work; and who are able to contribute as part of a high-performance team.” The average age of this team is 30, and they specialize in serving health care, financial services, manufacturing, education, and food/food service clients.

Issue advocacy, media strategy and crisis and reputation management are three of my favorite areas of public relations—and three specialties of Washington, DC based corporate communications and public affairs firm Chlopak, Leonard, Schechter & Associates (CLS). I’ve mentioned before how I often use Twitter to find the companies that I feature here, but lately I’ve been using Twitter more and more to connect with students and new grads who are going through the job search. Lately I’ve been noticing (and interacting with) a lot of PR students who are nervous about the job market. (By the way, you can follow me @willyf.) That’s why when I came across an entry level PR job with Roop & Co. – on Twitter nonetheless – I thought it was something I should let you all know about. Roop & Co. appears to be a small, more traditional PR firm located in Cleveland, OH. They don’t seem to have jumped on the social media bandwagon like many other PR firms, but what they do is equally cool. Roop & Co. specializes in PR, Graphic Design, and Investor Relations. The first 2 aren’t out of the ordinary, but you don’t see a lot of companies that do investor relations management for companies – at least I don’t.

On Thursday we took a look at jobs with Gawker Media, a blog network that recently sold off a few blogs. One of the blogs that they sold off is one of my absolute favorites – The Consumerist, a blog about consumers’ rights. The reason that they sold off the blog wasn’t that it was unpopular, it was that it was nearly impossible to make profitable because of the need to not show impropriety through relationships with advertisers. Luckily for Consumerist fans everywhere, a perfect solution came about with the purchase of The Consumerist by Consumers Union, the non-profit publisher of Consumer Reports. Although Consumers Union isn’t a typical non-profit, they do an amazing job of providing regular people with the information that they need to make informed purchases.

As we noted when we featured Blizzard’s entry level jobs, video game sales tend to do really well when unemployment is high. This is one of those times that you’re probably thinking about buying a Wii/Xbox 360/PS3 and forgoing the job search for the comfort of your parents’ basement. As much fun as it might be for the first 6 months, that’s not the answer. That’s why Jason Seiden and I are announcing our 21 day online job search training course today. The other day I got a fantastic restaurant recommendation over Twitter, and yesterday the same person gave me a great recommendation on internships with the company that she works at. Obviously I checked to see if they have any job openings, and they have a ton. Walker Sands Communications is based here in Chicago, and they are a well known PR firm with a specialization in Technology. Their three areas of expertise are PR, Design, and Strategic Marketing. Walker Sands also puts a strong emphasis on the entrepreneurial mindset – many of the people on their staff have built companies of their own. I always find it hard to find a point of differentiation between PR firms because they’re obviously very good at making themselves look good. The staff is usually what separates one firm from another, but it’s hard to judge a staff without working with them. I’ve always found it helpful to check out the firm’s client list to see if there are any names that you could get excited about working with.

Having a girlfriend who is a consultant, I’m often subjected to hours of consultant-speak. It’s not really English, as it consists mostly of acronyms. One thing consultants seem to talk about a lot, even though they don’t have an acronym for it, is the American Express Starwood Preferred Guest Card. It’s apparently by far the best credit card for the consulting lifestyle (especially when you work for a firm that almost exclusively puts you up in Starwood hotels). Since I’ve been hearing the Starwood name a lot, and I’ve had a few people recommend their Jobs to me, I thought it was time to take a look at what kind of entry level jobs are available with one of the world’s largest hotel and leisure companies. In case you’re not familiar with the Starwood brand, they’re the company behind Sheraton, Four Points, aloft, W Hotels, Le Meridien, The Luxury Collection, Element, Westin, and St. Regis. All of them are nice places to stay, and a few of them are about as trendy as you can get when it comes to hotels – check out aloft.

It’s been almost a year since we officially launched, and in that time we’ve featured quite a few entry level jobs in public relations. Many have been in-house jobs with major brands, while others have been on the consulting/agency side. When you’re looking at in-house jobs, it’s easy to find the point of differentiation – it’s all in the product or service that you’re trying to get press for; however, it’s not so easy to differentiate between jobs at different PR agencies. It usually takes a little work – you need to look at client lists, case studies, and awards to get a sense of how one agency is different from another. With LEWIS PR, the point of differentiation is clear – everything about what they do is international. They have locations in Australia, Benelux, Czech Republic, France, Germany, China, India, Italy, Japan, Nordics, Poland, Singapore, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Two days ago we featured MediaVest, a company that says it builds brands. Today, we have another “brand builder” for you. Liggett Stashower is a Cleveland, OH based advertising agency. They were named by Crain’s as the coolest place to work in Cleveland, and this video certainly backs it up. Liggett Stashower wins awards for community service and gives college students scholarships. I also hear that they occasionally pull children from burning buildings and are weeks away from the cure for cancer. Seriously, though, as soon as I arrived on Liggett Stashower’s website, I was impressed by them. They’ve done a fantastic job building their own brand, so it makes sense that other companies should trust them to do the same for them. If you’re interested in marketing, advertising, public relations, or communications, this is a place that you want to work.

When we landed upon the MWW Group About Us page, we were a little bit skeptical. How can any company claim to be “one of the nation’s top 10 PR agencies?” How do you rank something like that? Who does the ranking? Can’t any company make that kind of claim? We still don’t know who dubbed the MWW Group as one of the top 10 PR agencies in the country, but we’re not going to challenge them. Why not? Because the MWW Group was behind Amazon.com’s launch of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince which resulted in 1.5 million preorders. Any PR agency that is trusted with a launch like that, and then able to exceed expectations for the most hyped book launch ever can be in our top 10 too. Maybe they can help us promote our iPod giveaway – there are only a few entries so far, and it’s ridiculously easy to enter.

Beyond writing about a new company and its entry level jobs every day, there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that I have to do to continue One Day, One Job’s growth. A huge portion of that work falls under the categories of internet marketing and search engine optimization. Maybe I’m biased because I’m doing the stuff every day, but I think that being able to understand and implement internet marketing concepts will be essential in many of the career paths that today’s new college grads take. If you want to set yourself up with the internet marketing skills that aren’t being taught in most undergraduate curriculums, you should consider a first job at a place like HubSpot, a Cambridge, MA based internet marketing startup.

Hopefully college hasn’t drained you of your youth, because its going to be one of your strongest assets if you want to apply for an entry level jobs with today’s company. All that we can come up with is that it reminds us of the analogies section of the SATs (some of you are probably too young to have experienced that, since the College Board dumped analogies a few years ago); although, the SAT analogies were in the form of:

If you have a better analogy for us, we’d love to hear from you in the comments. We’d also love to hear from you if you know what the :: in thunder::tech is about. thunder::tech “is a web design shop, ad agency, PR firm, and design & branding studio all rolled into one.” They are an unbelievably fun company to research (but their website is totally distracting, in a good way), and they seem like an awesome place to start a career.

Despite what their name might make you think, Ruder Finn was not founded by someone from Finland with bad manners. They are actually a family-owned public relations firm that was founded in 1948 by David Finn and Wlliam Ruder. Ruder Finn has four specialties – Health & Wellness, Global Connectivity, Corporate & Public Trust, and Life & Style – with many areas of focus within those specialties. The firm’s first client was Perry Como, who was followed by a list of other celebrities; however, Ruder Finn represents more than just celebrities. They work with many major corporations, the United Nations, and they even represented the Bosniaks and the Croats in the Yugoslav Wars. Yes, warring nations choose Ruder Finn to manage their PR – that’s impressive, albeit a bit strange.

Considering that it’s July, you probably don’t have hockey on your mind right now, unless, of course, you’re sweltering in a room without air conditioning dreaming of the cool air inside the rink. Are you a fashionista? Do you just like being around beautiful people? They’re a tough company to research, since there’s a ton of online information about them, but very little that is job related. Getting a job at Ford Models doesn’t look like it’s an easy task, but that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try.

If you’ve ever been in New York City on a 100 degree day, you know it’s not the best place for your lungs. The air is thick and hard to breathe, the smell of the streets is downright disgusting, and the only respite is when you walk by the occasional open door of an establishment that has its air conditioning pumped up to the max. It’s not a good place for a kid to spend the summer – especially if that kid has asthma or other pulmonary problems (which are much more frequent for city children). That’s why The Fresh Air Fund, a not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer vacations in the country to more than 1.7 million children from disadvantaged communities in New York City since 1877.

We talk about Twitter a lot – we’ve featured Twitter’s entry-level jobs, and we’ve found a number of the companies we’ve featured on Twitter. Unfortunately, Twitter’s servers sometimes goes down because it is too popular. A lot of the people I interact with on Twitter are nearly fed up and have decided to give Plurk a try. Plurk is also a micro-blogging service, but they differentiate themselves by advertising that they are a “place that lets you publish your thoughts, emo-ness, #^@%!%(&, and loves.” They also have a different feature set than Twitter, but it’s generally the same idea – you share short messages with your network. I haven’t tried Plurk, because I’ve already invested a lot of time in building my network on Twitter. How would you like to leave Facebook and then refriend everyone on a new site (if they’re even on the new site)? That’s exactly why I haven’t left Twitter for Plurk. By the way, we have a new article about Facebook and resumes dropping this afternoon. It’s by a new writer for us, Rich, who is very funny, so come back later today to read it.

When we’re researching companies and looking for great entry-level jobs, we love to look over client lists. You may never have heard of a company, but if brands that you respect are hiring the company, then you know they must be worth considering. For instance, if you saw that a company’s clients included Nike, American Express (we respect them even if their Careers site is horrendous), Volvo, Rolex, Ford, and Playstation, you’d probably be pretty interested in learning about the company’s employment opportunities, right? Well that’s just a small sampling of the companies that entrust their brand and media presence to MindShare.

Until we just looked, we hadn’t realized how long it had been since we last featured a dedicated public relations firm. It’s funny that we’d overlook these types of jobs, since we’ve been focused on generating PR for ourselves over the last month. We recently came across Corporate Ink Public Relations on the Wall Street Journal’s Top Small Workplaces 2007. A little research showed that this is a PR firm that any college student with an interest in PR would kill to work for.

As Chef from South Park so poignantly said, “There’s a time and a place for everything, and it’s called college.” Sometimes college students do stupid things, and sometimes they get caught. Even some of the most successful people in the world got in trouble for things like underage drinking, public urination, or throwing a party that got a bit too loud. These are the types of things that can cause mild embarrassment and a few short-term headaches, but probably won’t ruin your life (as long as you don’t add them to your resume). During the past decade there has been a new indiscretion that has become popular with college students. Like the others, it seems victimless (which is debatable), but the repercussions of this offense can be much more serious. What is it? Copyright infringement.
Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that addresses many of those issues that college students face when it comes to understanding how copyright works. Now, Creative Commons isn’t going to get you off the hook when you get served a DMCA notice by the RIAA or anything like that, but they are helping to spread the ideology of openness when it comes to intellectual property. “Many Burton employees will snag freshies first thing in the morning before coming in to work during the winter.” Being non “riders,” we’re not quite sure what that means, but it sounds like Burton is a place where people love what they do. As if that wasn’t enough, their logo matches our color scheme, so we had to do a post about the world’s first snowboard factory.
Burton currently has three great entry-level opportunities that are perfect for someone fresh out of college. In their Irvine, CA location there are two positions: they are hiring a PR Coordinator (preferably someone who is positive, enthusiastic – especially about snowboarding, and a great communicator) and a US Apparel Sales Manager (this time they’re looking for somebody who is independent, investigative, and into traveling a lot). At their headquarters in Burlington, VT, they have an opening in product development as an Assistant Product Manger – Burton Binding for someone with excellent Adobe Illustrator skills and basic knowledge of how plastic injected parts are manufactured. The cool thing about these postings is that the job descriptions are honestly written (one job description that is sadly not entry-level used the word “stoked”) and provide the goals they have set for their future hire.
