I’m a nut about wildlife. I don’t watch Animal Planet all day or anything, but I get ridiculously excited when I see a new species in the wild. My hope is to one day run into a mountain lion in the wild, at least as long as I’m not being hunted. As fanatical as I am about wildlife, I bet I don’t even come close to the people at the Wildlife Conservation Society, a New York City based non-profit. They were founded in 1895 with a “clear mission to save wildlife and wild places across the globe.” Their first major success was aiding the recovery of American Bison, and now they’re working to “protect many of the world’s iconic creatures here and abroad, including gorillas in the Congo, tigers in India, polar bears in the Arctic, and ocean giants in our world’s amazing seascapes.” Beyond doing that, they also run 5 parks in New York City—the Bronx Zoo, New York Aquarium, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo and Queens Zoo.

Jobs in the Wild

According to Wildlife Conservation Society’s About page, they’re committed to protecting 25% of the world’s biodiversity. I’m not sure where that number came from, how it’s measured, or what exactly it means, but it sounds like an ambitious goal for a passionate organization. The way that pursues this goal is by focusing on 4 key issues: “climate change; natural resource exploitation; the connection between wildlife health and human health; and the sustainable development of human livelihoods.” With so much on their plate, Wildlife Conservation Society has a lot of job opportunities. You can find all of the information on their Jobs page, where they separate opportunities into New York City Full Time, New York City Seasonal, and Opportunities in the Field. Oddly enough, all of these pages feed into the same job search function. You can narrow down your search by any of the aforementioned categories, or you can just look at all of their job opportunities. You’ll probably want to take an especially long look at the following positions: Development Associate – Operations, Guest Relations Supervisor, Marketing Assistant, Membership Sales Associate, Pathology Technician, Program Assistant – Global Program Development, and Program Coordinator. You can apply for any of these positions online.

When I saw the name and location of Winston Salem, North Carolina’s Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, I was instantly reminded of one of my favorite recent reads—Thank You for Smoking by Christopher Buckley. A North Carolina based non-profit with Reynolds in it name has to be tied to the tobacco industry, and it is. “The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation was established in 1936 as a memorial to the youngest son of the founder of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company,” and it seems to be one of the few good things that has come out of the tobacco industry—”a trust for charitable works in the State of North Carolina.” The Foundation is focused on making grants to non-profit organizations in the areas of Community Economic Development, Democracy and Civic Engagement, the Environment, Pre-Collegiate Education, and Social Justice and Equity, which, in my opinion, is a huge improvement on the other things associated with the Reynolds name.

Improving North Carolina Grant by Grant

The cool thing about foundations like the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is that they get to give out lots of money. That’s what allows them to have such a wide range of focuses. Instead of having to do everything themselves, they can find the best organizations with the best people and fund them. Although the Foundation has had to make some changes due to the economy, they still have plenty of money to spread to do-gooders in North Carolina. If you’d like to spend some time working at the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, then you should check out their Jobs page. Although they don’t have any permanent positions posted right now, they do have an annual fellowship that they offer (it lasts 2 years, but they offer a new one every year). It sounds like a pretty cool gig, as “the fellow acts as a junior program officer and works with Foundation staff in evaluating grant proposals and visiting with grant applicants.” The application deadline is January 11, 2010, so check out all the information and see if a fellowship at Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is something that you want to do.

Often people don’t realize what services are available to them. I see this all the time with college students and Career Services offices—the students complain about a lack of help even though they’ve never stepped foot in the office. Another example is students who are having trouble paying for college yet have never applied for the thousands of dollars of scholarships that are available to them. This same thing happens all the time in the world of government programs—people endure hardship because they don’t know that there are programs intended just for them. We often hear that there’s a need for more programs to help the poor, yet programs like the Earned Income Tax Credit are significantly underutilized. Ladder Up is a Chicago based non-profit organization that has “returned $183 million to 100,000 hardworking families” by providing “free, real world financial solutions that maximize earnings and savings.” Whether it’s helping their clients claim a tax credit that they didn’t know about or walking a future college student through the financial aid process, Ladder Up helps people make the most of what’s available to them.

Climb the Ladder Up

Part of the problem with the government is that nothing is ever simple. Whether you’re apply for a government job, filing your taxes, or applying for some sort of government program, it’s always complicated. This means that people who need the most help from the government often don’t even know it’s available. Ladder Up changes this by working directly with their clients to help them “get off the ground and stay there.” When the working poor of Chicago run into problems claiming tax credits or refunds, they can go to Ladder Up for financial consulting advice. It’s a brilliant idea for a non-profit, and it’s apparently extremely effective—according to Ladder Up’s website they return $29 to the community for every $1 that is donated to them. That’s a huge ROI! Now, Ladder Up doesn’t have any jobs posted on Idealist right now; however, there are a couple of internships posted. A little deeper research on LinkedIn told me that Ladder Up does have entry level type positions, even if they may not be hiring right now. If you’re interested in a job with them, your best bet is to reach out to them through their Contact page.

Homelessness is pretty terrible, but the problems that it leads to can be even worse. One of those problems is often AIDS. Housing Works is a New York City based non-profit that “provides homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV/AIDS and their families with housing, meals, medical care, drug treatment, social support, employment opportunities and other lifesaving services.” The cool thing is the scale that they’re doing this on—they are “the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the United States.” That means that since 1990 they’ve served more than 20,000 New Yorkers.

Make Housing Works Work for You

What allows Housing Works to operate on such a large scale (they did $40 million in revenue last year) is their smart approach to fundraising. They run a number of social enterprise businesses that include a chain of thrift shops and a used bookstore/café. These businesses tie into the Housing Works mission because they create jobs for the individuals that Housing Works aims to help. It’s a fantastic model that seems to be extremely effective. If this sounds like something that you’d want to be a part of, then check out Housing Works’ Jobs page, or better yet, check out their Job postings on Idealist. They have a number of positions suitable for new grads including Recreation Assistant, Case Manager, and possibly Harm Reduction Coordinator.
Whether you’re trying to land a job, start a business, get in shape, figure out your personal finances, or get a date, there’s one piece of advice that I’ve found to be the most appropriate. It’s really simple and a little disappointing, but it just works. Do something! Get off your butt and take action. It will get you 80% of the way to accomplishing your goal. I’m not the only one who thinks this. Do Something, a New York City based non-profit, has adopted this two word phrase as their name. They’re focused on encouraging teenagers to take positive ideas and turn them into action. Instead of focusing on a specific cause, Do Something is all about getting teens to do something about the issues that matter to them—whatever they may be.

Umm… Do Something!

What impresses me most about Do Something is how they’re harnessing the power of the Internet to reach teens with their message. In fact, Do Something has created an online platform that gives teens the tools and resources that they need to take action. Everything that Do Something does is based on 5 guidelines:

Believe in teenagers. Teenagers can lead today. We don’t require adults.

Trust teenagers. We provide reliable, easy to access information and activation strategies, but teens decide for themselves what to do.

Celebrate teenagers. We think all measurable contributions from teens are valuable.

Respect teenagers. We understand that teenagers have diverse abilities and constraints.

Value teenagers. Our programs and products are free. We’re not after teens’ money; we want their passion, time and creativity.

The result of following these guidelines is a website that encourages teenagers to Act Now by using a search engine to find a project that they can join. Or students can start their own club or apply for a grant. Teens are completely empowered to take action on their own. How can you take action? You can check out jobs at Do Something. They’re a young non-profit, and they have what look to be two awesome jobs. You won’t find the word “experience” in either of the job descriptions, so as a new grad you should definitely consider their Clubs Associate and Digital Media Associate positions. The application instructions vary, so pay attention… and DO SOMETHING!

It’s hard to believe that squash, a sport that plenty of people haven’t even heard of, has so many non-profit organizations surrounding it. We’ve already featured New York’s StreetSquash and San Diego’s Surf City Squash, both members of the National Urban Squash and Education Association (NUSEA), and today we’re going to take a look at another member of the association, Boston’s SquashBusters. They are very similar to the other organizations that I’ve just mentioned in that they combine “squash with intensive academic tutoring, community service, and one-to-one mentoring to help student-athletes strive towards excellence in their lives.” SquashBusters works with about 100 ethnically diverse Boston public school youth and uses an apparently awesome facility on Northeastern University’s campus.

Unemployment Busters

SquashBusters has five key goals that they believe will help them achieve their mission “to challenge and nurture urban youth so that they recognize and fulfill their potential.”

to teach students to take responsibility for their actions and choices

to provide active educational experiences that motivate students to engage deeply with the learning process

to help students demonstrate good sportsmanship on and off the squash court

to promote understanding and friendships between people of different backgrounds

to engage students in service projects which help people and promote a commitment to the community

Whether you’re a squash player or not, you have to love what SquashBusters is doing. You also have to love the fact that SquashBusters is hiring. Even though their Jobs page says that they aren’t, there’s a job posting on Idealist for an Academic and Community Service Coordinator. It seems perfect for a new or recent grad, and there’s no requirement that you have played squash or received a teaching certificate. The job sounds great, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and résumé to SquashBuster’s Managing Director, Dominique Farinaux-Dumas, at d.farinaux-dumas@squashbusters.org.

I know that most of us were taught in school that slavery ended nearly 150 years ago, but, unfortunately, that’s not really true. Slavery and human trafficking continue to plague our world, even though most of us aren’t really aware of it. Polaris Project is a non-profit organization is not only bringing awareness to the issues surrounding human trafficking and modern-day slavery, but also combatting them. They do this by “conducting direct outreach and victim identification, providing social services and transitional housing to victims, operating the National Human Trafficking Resource Center (NHTRC) serving as the central national hotline on human trafficking, advocating for stronger state and Federal anti-trafficking legislation, and engaging community members in local and national grassroots efforts.” They’ve been at it since 2002 with offices in Washington, DC; Newark, NJ; Denver, CO; and Tokyo, Japan.

Find Polaris

When you look at some of the accomplishments that Polaris Project posts on its website, you start to understand what it is that they actually do. For instance just last year in the DC area, they “provided 28 emergency responses serving 40 girls and women ages 13-42,” “provided individual mental health therapy for 4 survivors,” and “launched a Job Training Program for survivors” among many other things. It’s still hard to believe that human trafficking is going on so close to home, but it is. That’s why the Polaris Project exists, and that’s why you should consider joining their team. Right now they have two job openings in the Washington, DC area: NHTRC Program Associate/Specialist and NHTRC Resource Call Specialist. There are also two openings in Newark, NJ: Outreach Associate (part-time) and Case Manager. Additionally, they have quite a few openings in their Fellowship Program. You can find the specific application instructions at the end of each job posting.

As I tell you every weekend, the non-profit world can never get enough top notch talent. Part of the reason is that the careers aren’t nearly as lucrative as private sector careers, but another part of it is that there are a seemingly unlimited number of non-profit organizations out there. Taproot Foundation solves this problem in an interesting way. They act as a project management consulting service while linking top notch business professionals up with non-profit organizations in a volunteer capacity. They typically work with organizations in the areas of Arts, Education, Social Services, Environment, and Health on engagements in the areas of marketing, HR, IT, and strategy management. I’m always impressed by non-profit consulting services, and this appears to be a pretty cool twist on that model.

Tap into a New Career

The way that the Taproot Foundation works is that they recruit a team of 3-6 volunteers to work on an engagement. The teams are typically virtual, and they commit to 100 hours of time over 6 months. Each team member has a specific role, and a clear idea of the scope, deliverables, project plan, timeline, and tools & additional resources that will be relevant to the project. The team will also have the support of the Taproot staff and other volunteers at higher levels. It’s a really cool approach, and the volunteer opportunities sound truly exciting; however, the Taproot Foundation also happens to be hiring. Current job openings that might be suitable for new grads include VISTA Program Development Fellow – Pro Bono Action Tank (San Francisco, CA), VISTA Corporate Sponsorship Fellow (Chicago, IL), and VISTA Eastern – Central Region Program Fellow (Washington, DC). They also have a location in New York, but there’s nothing suitable there right now. Each of the job descriptions goes into great detail, so check them out to get the full scoop on the careers that the Taproot Foundation offers.

I happen to work with someone who knows a thing or two about leadership development. We’ve already developed one product to help future leaders land a job, and we have more in the pipeline. That’s why Public Allies caught my interest when a friend recently told me that they are hiring. They’re a Milwaukee, WI based non-profit that aims to “advance new leadership to strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation.” They do this in three ways: putting diverse young adults through a paid full-time nonprofit apprenticeships, engaging and growing an alumni network of diverse leaders, and helping leaders and organizations better harness the assets of diverse teams and communities through training and consulting programs.

Join the Allies

By holding “the conviction that everyone leads,” Public Allies is creating a permanent network of leaders who are committed to a concerted effort to initiate positive change. They’re doing this where they’re headquarted in Milwaukee as well as in Phoenix, AZ; Chicago, IL, Cincinnati, OH; Bridgeport, CT; Wilmington, DE; Estes Park, CO; Los Angeles, CA; Miami, FL; Albuquerque, NM; New York, NY; Durham, NC; Pittsburgh, PA; San Antonio, TX; and Milpitas, CA. Their Ally Program is the first thing that may interest you. It’s a 10-month full-time Americorps apprenticeship that puts you to work at a non-profit in your community. You can check out the application and eligibility requirements here. Beyond this program, Public Allies also has a number of job openings. They’re not necessarily entry level, but the following positions (all located in Chicago, IL) might be worth looking at: Program Support Coordinator, Program Director, and Program Manager / Leadership Series Coordinator. That consulting group is Chicago’s campusCATALYST, an organization that “seeks to direct the innovation, ingenuity, and problem solving skills of America’s future leaders towards community development by cultivating a rich academic and social entrepreneurship experience for college students and tangible solutions for nonprofits.” In other words, they take students from the University of Chicago and Northwestern and put them on consulting teams that help non-profits achieve their missions.

A CATALYST for Your Career

Although I haven’t interacted directly with campusCATALYST, I have heard nothing but good things about them. They’ve certainly helped National Coaching Fellows, and they’ve also had a significant impact on other local non-profits. campusCATALYST is only starting its second year, but the level of quality that they appear to have built into their program already is outstanding. They’ve created an amazing opportunity for current college students who have an interest in non-profit work and consulting, but they’re also growing into something more. That’s why they’re hiring. Right now they have a Program Director position posted on Idealist. It’s not necessarily an entry level job, but considering the fact that campusCATALYST was started by an ‘07 Northwester graduate named Molly Day, I doubt that your graduation year will be their main concern. The job looks awesome, and you can apply by sending a cover letter and résumé to cC@campuscatalyst.org.

We all know it; studying abroad can be a total joke. I know plenty of kids who partied in a different country for a semester and managed to get college credit for it. Fortunately, there are plenty of study abroad programs that focus more on the “study” than the “abroad.” One of those is The School for Field Studies. Now, you may be skeptical when you see their list of locations sounds more like your top 5 vacation destinations (Costa Rica, Turks & Caicos, Kenya, Mexico, and Australia), but look at all of their student accomplishments. The School for Field Studies is “the nation’s oldest and largest environmental study abroad program,” and it combines “hands-on environmental studies with scientific research to develop sustainable solutions to critical environmental problems.”

Work in the Field

While some students are drinking their way across Spain, The School for Field Studies’ students are getting works like Wood density predicts plant damage and vegetative recovery rates caused by cyclone disturbance in tropical rainforest tree species in North Queensland, Australia or Efficacy of a starch-iodide swab technique to detect the illegal use of bleach in a Spiny Lobster published. Those topics may seem way out of left field to you, but I’ll bet that you’ll be happy they did that research when you’re on vacation and order for lobster for dinner. Or would you rather eat a lobster that was poisoned with bleach? Exactly. The School for Field Studies sounds like a really cool institution, which is why you might want to consider a job with them. They have a few current openings that could be suitable for new grads including Safety Program Specialist at their headquarters in Salem, MA and Student Affairs Manager at their Center for Rainforest Management Studies in Australia. You can apply for a job with SFS by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@fieldstudies.org.

I don’t know where they were when I was looking for a math related non-profit for Pi Day, but I was excited to learn about Reasoning Mind through a Facebook message from George Khachatryan that asked me to help them get the word out about their entry level positions. We’ll get to those in a second, but first let’s talk about what Reasoning Mind is. It’s a Houston, TX based non-profit (with offices in Dallas, TX and Moscow too) that is offering “an engaging online community that develops students’ math knowledge and thinking skills” so that every child can receive “a first-rate math education.” They’re already working in quite a few schools in California, Texas, and Louisiana, and they also offer individual enrollment over the web. Reasoning Mind seems to be a family affair, as the President & CEO and the Vice President also happen to be Khachatryans.

Reasoning Jobs

Reasoning Mind wants you to “imagine a day when children love their math class so much, they do math problems at home instead of playing video games.” That’s a lofty goal, but they’ve created what they call RM City to make it happen. It looks like an awesome web interface that might remind kids of Club Penguin or Webkinz World. I wish I had RM City when I was a kid. So, what about their jobs? According to George, they’re looking to fill 30 Program Coordinator positions across the country. Most positions are expected to be in cities across Texas, but that may change depending on where Reasoning Mind is able to initiate new partnerships. The job posting is fantastic, and it even has a picture of the hiring manager – Steve Gaudino – and his title at the top, so you know whom you’re going to be working for. I’ve never seen that before, and I love it.

Program Coordinators are responsible for supporting around 1,000 students and their teachers who are using the Reasoning Mind program by “visiting schools, meeting with teachers to provide training and support, monitoring the progress of students, and working with principals and other school staff.” It sounds like an awesome job, so check out the job description and apply (the application form is on the job description page) by May 1st if you’d like to start in July. You can also apply at the end of August or end of November for a later start date.

A week ago I reminisced about my early interest in science as I told you about jobs with the Museum of Science, Boston. As a young kid, I always felt secure in loving science and never worried too much about what other kids thought. Maybe it was because it was ok for boys to like science? Or because the exposure to science that I had was designed for boys? I don’t know. What I do know is that females are largely underrepresented in careers in science, engineering, and technology. Techbridge is an Oakland, CA based non-profit that is “encouraging girls in science, technology, and engineering careers” by developing and implementing a science education program just for girls. The program has been around for 9 years, and it seems to be working well.

Techbridging the Gap

As a guy, it’s not all that easy to write about organizations that are focused on addressing women’s issues, but it’s hard not to like an organization that “has served over 2,500 girls in grades 5-12.” Techbridge was launched by the Chabot Space & Science Center in Oakland, CA, and now works in 17 local school districts. The next step for the organization is to “launch Techbridge programs-in-a-box to inspire thousands more girls in technology and engineering.” Now that they know what works, they want to expand it across the country. They’ve already teamed up with some Girl Scout Troops to test the “programs-in-a-box,” and hopefully they’ll see a lot of success. If you’d like to be a part of that success, then you should consider a job with Techbridge. They list their opportunities on Idealist, and right now there’s only one job available, but it looks well suited to new grads. It’s as a Program Coordinator/Instructor, and it appears to be an awesome job with lots of hands on work. If you’re interested in applying, send a cover letter and resume to techbridgegirls@gmail.com. with “Program Coordinator” in the subject line.

Sustainability has become a major buzzword over the past few years. Anyone who wants to appear to be a qualified leader has jumped on the bandwagon and started using the word loosely. For the most part we identify “sustainability” with the environment, but it can really apply to anything. My definition is something like “helping to create a situation in which you can keep doing what you’re doing for a long time.” It’s really about a long-run mindset instead of a short-run mindset. For Institute for Sustainable Communities sustainability is a long run thing. They’re a Montpelier, VT based non-profit that has had sustainability on its mind since it was founded in 1991 by Vermont’s then-governor Madeleine M. Kunin.

Is Your Job Going to Be Sustainable?

ISC works in a wide range of areas – Climate & Environment, Community Building, Civil Society, Education for Sustainability, Social Entrepreneurship, Health, Social Justice, Youth, Advocacy & Leadership, and IQCs. That seems to cover most of the areas that non-profits generally address, so how does an organization with an $11 million budget take a sustainable approach to its work? Instead of focusing on the actual work that needs to be done, Institute for Sustainable Communities seems to focus on the communities themselves. They try to “build capacity and infrastructure from the top-down and the bottom-up leaving a legacy of leadership as well as enduring results.” That sounds like a sustainable approach to creating positive change to me. If you like what you hear, then you should check out ISC’s Jobs page. They have a number of open positions, but only one appears to be geared towards new or recent college grads – Program/Office Assistant. The job is located at their Washington, DC office, and you can apply by e-mailing a cover letter and resume to ccarpenter@iscvt.org with “DC Assistant” in the subject line.

Having grown up in Connecticut and now living in Illinois, I’ve lived in areas that don’t have too many National Parks. Luckily, I’ve had the chance to see Yellowstone and Grand Teton. They are unbelievable. Our National Parks here in the US are one of the best things that the government has done – they’re a big part of what makes this country so special. Unfortunately, the same government that gave us those parks doesn’t always seem to have their best interest in mind. That’s why National Parks Conservation Association exists. They are a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC that is focused on “working on key initiatives to restore America’s national parks by the centennial anniversary of the National Park Service in 2016.” If you’ve never visited a National Park, you should. You can use this locator provided by the National Park Service to find the park closest to you.

These Jobs Are a Walk in the Park

If you love the outdoors as much as I do (or dig historic sites, which many National Parks are), and you want a job that is going to put you to work protecting what you love, then the NPCA may be the place for you. They have a great website that is filled with information about what they’re doing to protect our National Parks. The best way to get a quick introduction to the organization is probably to check out their video, which does a nice job of presenting their story. Put simply, the NPCA is all about making our National Parks’ 100th birthday a real reason to celebrate. 2016 is still far enough away that a lot of meaningful work can be done before then, which is why you should check out jobs with the NPCA. Right now there’s only one job that appears to be suitable or new college grads at the NPCA – Program Coordinator. The job is located in Bozeman, MT, and it looks fantastic. You can apply online, so get at it before 2016 comes around!

It’s no secret that poverty and poor health are deeply related. Limited access to healthcare is part of the reason, but there’s a lot more to the story. Nearly everything that we do in our lives has some bearing on our health outcomes, and a life in poverty creates factor after factor that leads to poor health outcomes. Project HEALTH is a non-profit organization that works in Baltimore, MD; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; New York, NY; Providence, RI; and Washington, DC to break “the link between poverty and poor health.” Honestly, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. I think that poverty and poor health will forever be intertwined, but battling poverty will be the key to creating better health outcomes for lower-income people. I guess it all depends on how you define poverty.

A Project for You

Despite my confusion with Project Health’s tagline, I think that they’ve put together two awesome programs that show that they really do get it. The first is Family Help Desk, which offers clinics where “physicians can ‘prescribe’ food, housing, health insurance, job training, fuel assistance, or other resources for their patients as routinely as they do medication.” I always thought it was kind of silly that our medical system focused mostly on prescribing medication and not on making recommendations about other areas patients’ lives, so I think that Project HEALTH has nailed it here. It should be so surprise that:

The Family Help Desk’s straightforward, preventative referrals to government and community resources – such as affordable housing, child care, employment, GED classes, and job training – enable families to avert crises and to access increased income and education, which have been documented to result in better long-term health outcomes

It sounds like an amazing program! Project HEALTH’s second program is called STRIVE and it’s “an afterschool intervention that provides low-income teens with sickle cell disease with the mentoring, peer support, academic assistance, and disease management education they need to manage their condition effectively and realize their full potential.” It also sounds like it’s doing some impressive work. Another part of the Project HEALTH story is that most of their projects are staffed by college volunteers. On that note, they do have jobs beyond the volunteer level for those of you who have graduated. Project HEALTH’s Jobs page has 6 openings posted right now. 5 are as Family Help Desk Program Managers (in Baltimore, Chicago, New York, Providence, and Washington, DC) which seem to require some prior work experience, while the other job is clearly entry level – Family Help Desk Program Assistant, Baltimore. You can find out how to apply from the job descriptions.

Today my little sister is on her way back from a few months in Ethiopia teaching art at an orphanage for children who have lost their parents to AIDS. From what I’ve heard so far, she’s had an amazing impact, so I’m obviously overwhelmingly proud of her. It’s hard to imagine what life without a family is like, but there are millions of children all across the world who know all too well what it’s like. That’s why we’re taking a look at Kidsave today (not the organization that my sister was working with). They’re a Los Angeles, CA based non-profit that is aiming to “to ensure that no orphan or foster child is forgotten and that every child grows up in a family with love and hope for a successful future.” It all started when friends and business partners Terry Baugh and Randi Thompson, both adoptive parents, realized how tragic the stories of orphaned children really are. They started Kidsave in 1997, and since then they have helped “more than 2700 children [find] parents and lasting connections with adults.”

Saving Kids

Kidsave operates all across the globe with the specific goal of helping children find permanent families. Kidsave has 6 main programs – Weekend Miracles, Summer Miracles, Russian Programs, Colombian Programs, Model Programs, and Advocacy. All of these programs appear to be based on the Family Vist Model, which “draws from a broad base of research on orphaned and abandoned children’s needs and how best to meet those needs.” It looks like a fantastic program, and it should be something that you want to be a part of. Luckily, they’re hiring. They only have one job opening, but it’s perfect for a new grad. It’s not posted on Kidsave’s Jobs page, but you can find it on Idealist. The position title is Summer and Weekend Miracles Program Coordinator. There are quite a few requirements (but none of them are experience based), so check out the job description, and send a cover letter and resume to jennifer@kidsave.org if you’d like to apply.

How’s the relationship between your college or university and the town or city that it’s in? Let me guess. Not so hot. It always seems that students and “townies” don’t get along too well. Beyond that, there can also be situations like at Yale in New Haven, CT where the students are generally much wealthier than the people who live in the surrounding neighborhood. This just exacerbates the fundamental gap between the university and the community. National Student Partnerships is a non-profit organization that was started in New Haven by two Yale students who wanted to close this gap. They “designed a program where college student volunteers work one-on-one with community residents, coordinating access to employment opportunities and social services, including job training, housing, health care, child care, and transportation.” It’s a wonderful idea, and it’s working – look at the success stories.

Become a Part of NSP

In a lot of ways college students are an untapped resource. They generally have a lot of free time, a lot of energy, and a lot of brains – they’re just lacking a bit when it comes to “real world” experience. Putting them to work whether it be an internship or a volunteer program like NSP just makes sense. Additionally, college students are our future, which is why “NSP seeks to unite a national movement of students dedicated to direct service now, so that the systemic challenges we inherit do not become ones we will pass on.” Beyond offering volunteer opportunities and internships, NSP also has some entry level jobs for new grads. You can find the listings on NSP’s Jobs page, and they include openings for a Site Coordinator and a Regional Program Manager. The Site Coordinator positions are available in Baltimore, MD; Bronx, NY; Cambridge, MA; Chicago, IL; Evanston, IL; New Haven, CT; Philadelphia, PA (2 Offices); Pittsburgh, PA; Richmond, VA; Somerville, MA; and Washington, DC, while the Regional Program Manger position is located in Boston, MA. You can apply for the Site Coordinator jobs by sending a cover letter and resume to jobs@nspnet.org, and for the Regional Program Manager job by sending your materials to joinus@nspnet.org

If your sweetheart is out of a job this Valentine’s Day, then give him or her a gift that shows that you really care. Chocolates, flowers, and jewelry only bring temporary satisfaction, but there’s nothing more satisfying (besides a relationship with you, of course) than a job that you love. Enroll your sweetheart in Found Your Career (our online job search training course) today.

So far my Valentine’s Day related posts have been mostly about consumerism (ProFlowers, OpenTable, eHarmony, Tiffany & Co, and Vosges); however, since Valentine’s Day fell on a weekend this year, I had to find a Cupid approved non-profit. Since today is all about hearts, I thought that it’d be fitting to talk about jobs with American Heart Association. In case it’s not obvious, they’re a non-profit organization devoted to cardiovascular health. Their mission is to “build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” It’s a simple mission, but it’s not an easy one. Since Valentine’s Day is really about the people whom we love, it’s fitting that we’re talking about an organization that is working to make sure that our loved ones are around and healthy for as long as possible.

Follow Your Heart to a New Job

American Heart Association has locations all across the country and a wide variety of job offerings. The job search function on their website is very easy to use, and it shows that they currently have 66 job openings. They are by no means all entry level, but there appear to be plenty of opportunities for new college grads. Administrative and Development seem to be popular areas for them right now, but there are other jobs as well. Make sure that you don’t overlook the positions with “Director” in the title. Usually jobs like those require significant experience, but the sampling that I looked at typically required 2+ years of experience, which might include some of you. There are literally jobs in ever state, so take a look and apply through their online process. If you have any questions about how to apply, check their FAQ.

At some point in your life, you’ve probably had a conflict – an argument with your parents, siblings, roommates, or others. Humans inherently have conflicting interests, but that doesn’t mean that common ground can’t be found. Search for Common Ground is a non-profit organization that “works to transform the way the world deals with conflict – away from adversarial approaches and towards collaborative problem solving.” Sometimes it may seem impossible, but most conflicts can be resolved peacefully through with the right methods. Search for Common Ground uses its 5 core principles to encourage attitudes that resolve conflicts across the world. These are: Conflict is neither negative nor positive; Conflict can be transformed; Finding common ground; Peace is a process; and Humankind is interdependent. If you want to know more about Search for Common Ground’s approach, you can take their Guided Tour.

Searching for Jobs with Search for Common Ground

Here’s a video that goes into greater detail about what Search for Common Ground is all about:

Search for Common Ground currently has about a dozen jobs listed on their Jobs page, although only a few of them will be of interest to new college grads. We recommend that you check out Program Assistant – Sub-Saharan Africa (Washington, DC), Web and New Media Manager (Washington, DC), and Part-time Office Manager (Brussels, Belgium). The experience requirements for these jobs are a little steeper than what we’d usually want to feature here, but we think that you should be able to sell Search for Common Ground on your readiness for the job if you have the right background. To apply, check out the instructions at the end of the job descriptions.

I’m not going to start an Economics debate on a Saturday morning, but I’m tempted. Trickle Up is a non-profit organization that was named as a slap in the face to the theory of trickle-down economics. Regardless of their economic philosophy, they appear to be doing great work by empowering “people living on less than $1 a day to take the first steps out of poverty, providing them with resources to build microenterprises for a better quality of life.” Trickle Up is based out of New York City, and they believe strongly in microfinance, micropreneurship, and microenterprises as being the solution to worldwide poverty. Their website does a great job of telling their story, so I recommend that you check it out to get a full feel for whom Trickle Up helps and how they do it.

Trickling Up

Trickle Up’s Jobs page is extremely simple and doesn’t include many details about what it’s like working for them, but it does include job postings with in-depth descriptions. There’s a Development Associate – Individual Giving position that doesn’t appear to require very much experience. It’s not explicitly entry leve, but if you have any fundraising/development experience, then it’s certainly worth a look. The deadline for applying is January 19th, and you can apply by sending a cover letter, resume and one writing sample to jesseg@trickleup.org with “Development Associate” in the subject line. There’s also a Program Associate for Africa job available (although the deadline was yesterday, 1/9/09). It looks like a really cool opportunity, so it might be worth trying to sneak in a late application by sending a resume and cover letter to africa@trickleup.org with “Program Associate” in the heading. It appears that the Development job is located in New York City, and the Program Associate job is in Africa. Trickle Up also has headquarters in India, Mali, Uganda, and Guatemala and projects in even more countries, but there don’t appear to be any other jobs available.

Have you ever heard of the slow food movement? Despite what it might sound like, it’s not about eating snails, turtles, and sloths. The slow food movement about envisioning “a word in which all people can eat food that is good for them, good for the people who grow it and good for the planet,” or as USA Today puts it, “slow food aims to everything that fast food is not.” As delicious as Chicken McNuggets are, I have to say that fresh, locally grown produce usually comes out ahead for me. Slow Food USA is a non-profit organization based in Brooklyn, NY that is working to grow the slow food movement and “to create dramatic and lasting change in the food system.” I wish I could tell you more about what their strategy is to accomplish this, but their 5 Year Strategic Plan is “coming soon.”

Eat Slowly, Apply Quickly

If you’ve been visiting your local farmers’ market and trying to eat local foods as often as possible, then Slow Food USA might be a place that you want to think about working. The organization’s focus is on education, which they approach through a variety of programs. These include Slow Food in Schools, Slow Food on Campus, Renewing America’s Food Traditions, Slow Food Nation, and quite a few more. If any of these programs look like something that you might have been involved with in college, then why not take a look at Slow Food USA’s Employment and Internships page. Right now, most of their job openings are at the Director level (which is unfortunately too advance for most of you), but they do have one job as a Youth Program Coordinator that looks inviting for new grads. The job description says that they’re looking for someone with 3 years of experience in a related field, but the rest of the description makes it sound like something that could be a good fit for a lot of new grads who have spent some time working, volunteering, and extra-curricularing (yes, I invented a new word) during college. They’ll be accepting cover letters and resumes for this position until January 16th at jobs.sfis@slowfoodusa.org. There’s also a job listing for a Membership Assistant at the bottom of Slow Food USA’s Jobs page that doesn’t fit in with the rest of the page. This looks like a surefire entry level job, although it says that the job starts in November of 2007. Considering the start date and the placement on the page, this looks like it might be an outdated posting, but you could give it a shot if it looks interesting to you.

As I’ve been expressing in my posts about our upcoming job search training course and the HP Magic Giveaway, there’s nothing better than the feeling of sharing your skills and knowledge with someone who can use the help. CoachArt is a Los Angeles based non-profit that allows every day people to share what they’re good at with underprivileged children and adolescents who are dealing with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. CoachArt’s coaches offer free, personal lessons in arts and athletics – including art, music, photography, yoga, creative writing, acting, dancing and more – to improve the lives of kids who are facing serious, adult issues. They’ve already served thousands of children in just 8 years of operation. CoachArt sounds like an amazing program that would be well worth working or volunteering for.

The Art of Coaching

CoachArt’s coaching positions are volunteer only, but they sound like an extraordinary way to share one of your passions with children who need an escape from the realities of their illnesses. However, if you’re looking for a full time job with CoachArt, you’re in luck. They just posted an opening for a Program Coordinator on Idealist, and the job descriptions sounds like the job will be well suited to new college grads. If you end up landing the job, you’ll be working with both coaches and the families of the children in the program to ensure that participation on both sides is going smoothly. Although they don’t list their jobs on their website, CoachArt actually has a great website that is loaded with information. It’s well worth your time to use the links below to find out more about what they’re doing to improve the lives of children. The Program Coordinator position seems to be the only job that CoachArt have available right now, and they’re looking to hire immediately, so you might want to jump on this opportunity by sending a cover letter and resume to Karina Nordbak at karina@coachart.org as quickly as you possibly can.

Just because you’re graduating college doesn’t mean that you have to be done with educational development. Even if you haven’t studied education for a second, you must have picked up something with 17 years in the educational system. At the very least you’ve lived in a thriving society, and you understand how education, health, civil society and economic development are the keys to a better life. Maybe you take these things for granted, but once you see what the non-profit Academy for Educational Development is doing, you’ll get a better understanding for how innovative solutions can help solve critical social and economic problems. AED has programs that focus on 7 specific areas – Education, Enterprise & Economic Development, Environment & Energy, Health, HIV/AIDS, Leadership & Democracy, and Youth – and they also take 7 different approaches – Behavior Changes, Gender, Partnerships, Research & Evaluation, Social Marketing, Technology Applications, and Training. It may sound like they have their hands full, and they do. AED is running “more than 250 programs serving people in all 50 U.S. states and more than 150 countries.”

Join the Academy

Getting a feel for what exactly the Academy for Educational Development does is a little tough. It’s not that they don’t eloquently describe themselves, but it’s that they do so much. The best way to get a deeper feel for what the organization works on every day is to read their What We Do page and their Projects page. Like what you see? Why not consider working at AED.

The Academy for Educational Development has an interesting way of organizing their jobs – they do it by pay grade. The grades range from 3 to 10, and we think that you should look most closely at Grades 4 and 5 even though the experience requirements appear to be a bit beyond what most new college grads have. This seems a bit weird at first, but it actually makes browsing their jobs really easy. All you have to do is go to their Current Openings and then check out each grade. Grade 3 is typically Administrative jobs, and they don’t have any right now. Grade 4 has one job, which is Senior Program Assistant – The Open World Program Center for International Exchanges. Grade 5 has 8 jobs – Senior Program Associate, AED Center for Global Health & Communication Marketing; Accounting Associate, AED Accounting Department; Executive Assistant, AED Center for Gender Equity; Program Associate, AED Center for Academic Partnerships; Program Associate, AED Center for Health Communication; Senior Program Associate, Web Portal, AED Information Technology Applications Center; Senior New Media and eMarketing Associate, AED Center for Health Communication; and Technical Support Analyst, AED Information Technology Department. Yes, a lot of these jobs have “Senior” in the title, but the job descriptions look pretty close to entry level. We think that it would be well worth your while to apply for most of these jobs if they interest you, and you can do that by sending a cover letter and resume to employ@smtp.aed.org with the position # (it’s in the job posting) somewhere in the e-mail. Although they don’t make it clear in the job postings, we think that all of these jobs are at AED’s headquarters in Washington, DC.

Although you may not realize it, but most college students return home after they graduate. Don’t believe me? Check out this article that says that 58% of you will return home and 32% of you will stay for more than a year. Although it may not be your desired outcome, it’s nice to have a place to stay and get settled before you start life in the real world; in fact, it’s a luxury. There are a lot of people and families who are left without a home, education, or a job and need a place to settle for a bit. They don’t have their parents’ house to go back to, and they don’t know where to go or what to do. If they’re in the Bronx, they can go to Citizens Advice Bureau, a settlement house. What’s a settlement house? You’ll get the full story in the Wikipedia entry on the settlement movement.

Get Settled with Citizens Advice Bureau

Citizens Advice Bureau provides a wide array of services for people who are facing tough times. CAB wants to help the 1/3 of Bronx residents who are living in poverty to improve their lives by building sustainable local economies. It all started with one small office, and now CAB operates 28 sites and serves 35,000 residents every year. As they continue to grow, they need help, and new college grads are perfect for many of the positions that they’re hiring for. CAB’s Jobs page is filled with opportunities for you to touch the lives of people who are struggling. There are both full-time and part-time positions, and the areas of work range from Program Development and Case Management to Early Childhood Teaching and Development. If you’re looking for non-profit work in New York City, Citizens Advice Bureau is definitely worth looking at. The e-mail addresses to apply to vary for each job, so pay attention if you’re applying to multiple jobs. There is an online job application posted on CAB’s website, but we’re not sure what it’s for.

As we grow up and start looking for our first jobs, we often fail to realize how easy we had it. Although good grades and getting into college are important, almost all seniors and new grads who are looking for an entry level job never had to worry about survival. It was a given. I’m sure that there are some of you reading who had very different experiences, but most of you are now facing the most distressing times of your lives – entering the real world. It’s easy to forget that there are millions of children in the world who live each day trying to survive. Save the Children is an international non-profit organization that focuses almost entirely on making the lives of children across the world better. They do so with a focus on 7 main areas: Economic Opportunities, Education, Emergencies, Protection, Health, Hunger and Malnutrition, and U.S. Literacy and Nutrition. Save the Children has spent the last 70 years fighting poverty’s effects on children through their unique self-help approach, and they’re not stopping any time soon.

Since diplomacy is “the art and practice of conducting negotiations between representatives of groups or states” according to Wikipedia, one would assume that a diplomat is a representative of a group or state. Independent Diplomat is a non-profit organization that is trying to live outside that definition. Their mission is to provide the knowledge and experience of long time diplomats to countries that are disadvantaged or marginalized to the point that they don’t have the resources to effectively practice diplomacy. Started by a former British diplomat, Independent Diplomat has worked with nations that include Somaliland, Western Sahara, Kosovo, and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus to prevent and resolve conflict. They’re kind of like management consultants for diplomacy.

Working for Diplomacy

If you majored in International Relations, you’re probably already really excited about the possibility of a job with Independent Diplomat. They’re a unique organization that takes a very different approach to foreign affairs. They are currently looking for a Program and Development Assistant in their New York City office. This position is closely intertwined with the Executive Director and the Director of Development, and requires someone who is truly committed to changing the practice of diplomacy. There are certainly some administrative tasks involved with this job, but there’s also a lot of room to grow and learn. You can find an extremely thorough job description here.

This is the only job that Independent Diplomat currently has that looks well suited to new college grads, but it seems like a perfect fit. To apply you should send an e-mail to newyork@independentdiplomat.org with “Program and Development Assistant” in the subject line. Your e-mail should include: a cover letter of no more that one page stating why you are interested in the job and why you believe you are qualified for it; a resume of no more than 2 pages; a sample of your writing of no more than 2 pages; and contact details for 2 references for whom you have worked in a professional capacity and who are willing and available to be contacted.

If you’ve been reading One Day, One Job for any amount of time, you probably know that I am a fanatical fly fisherman. Anything having to do with fishing catches my interests, so it should be no big surprise that I had to tell you about the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association and their entry-level jobs. Most sport fishermen aren’t too fond of commercial fishing in general, but most fishermen also like to eat fish more often than they catch fish. The Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association is a non-profit organization for fishermen who are doing it right. They limit their catch through the use of less effective fishing techniques to ensure that they preserve the ecosystem and help to improve fish stocks. The members of this organization realize that without a healthy fishery, they won’t be able to feed their families (or our families), so they sacrifice short-term gain for long-term prosperity. The CCCHFA is not a traditional trade association but an environmental non-profit organization.

A Job to Get Hooked On

Most people think of Cape Cod as a place to spend a summer, but the entire Cape Cod economy was based on fishing not too long ago. There’s still a large population of fishermen who are making a living solely through fishing, but they continue to struggle with resource depletion that comes with overfishing and habitat destruction. That’s why the Cape Cod Commercial Hook Fishermen’s Association is looking to hire two new grads as Program Associates (PDF) to help them with their Fisheries Reform Campaign and Sector Monitoring Program. They are currently hiring on a contract basis (paid hourly) through the end of 2008 with the possibility of full-time salaried employment starting in 2009. These are entry-level jobs for new college graduates who have a background in environmental science, natural resources management, fisheries, or other related fields. The CCCHFA is located in North Chatham, MA. You should apply by September 8th by sending a cover letter and resume to mel@ccchfa.org.

I started using computers at age 5. I took an after school class in kindergarten where we learned about Turtle on an Apple IIe (the precursor to the Macintosh). I learned to type in elementary school, and in middle school I was teaching myself how to build websites. Without that foundation I would have never been able to start this site that you’re visiting right now. Computers have been an essential tool in my education, and I have been lucky enough to have access to the latest computing technology throughout most of my life. Many kids don’t have the access to computers at home like I did growing up, and as these kids get into middle school they face a widening “achievement gap.” Computers for Youth is a non-profit organization that wants to minimize this achievement gap by enhancing the educational resources in children’s homes, improving parent-child interaction around learning at home, and helping teachers connect classroom learning with the home. They believe that this can all be done by putting computers in the home.

Computers Are More Than Just Fun and Games

Computers for Youth believes that:

a computer designed as a home learning center, for example—children can become self-directed learners, avid readers, excited mathematicians, and responsible citizens. Parents, meanwhile, are drawn in to what their children are learning and become true partners in the process.

That seems like a pretty tall task when you consider the mindless things that most of us use computers for, but it truly is unbelievable when you consider the educational possibilities that the Internet provides. With a relatively small investment, any family can have access to nearly unlimited free information on demand.

You can help enable these families by working for Computers for Youth – they have a number of job opportunities that look to be well suited for new college grads. The CFY Jobs page lists two positions for Master Teachers in Philadelphia and New York City. You don’t need a Master’s Degree, but you will be training other teachers for the Computers for Youth program. CFY also has two positions listed on Idealist.org that they don’t have on their website. They’re looking for an Executive Assistant and Office Manager and a Program Manager. Neither of these New York City based jobs are distinctly entry-level, but we think that they might be great fits for the right new college grad. Computers for Youth is very specific in how they want you to apply for a job, so be sure to read the job descriptions carefully.

We’ve featured jobs at a botanical garden before, but we thought it was time to reach out to those plant science and botany majors again. It’s especially appropriate because spring is in full force at One Day, One Job Headquarters. Everything has bloomed, and not only is it beautiful here, but it also smells great. As soon as we open a door or window we’re hit with a fragrant burst of springtime. Since we hear from a lot of people that we focus too much on jobs in New York and California (hey, that’s where a lot of the jobs are), the addition of the Chicago Botanic Garden to our employer profiles should be welcome.

Chicago Has Great Flora and Fauna

You may have heard that a wild cougar was recently shot by police in downtown Chicago and that another was sighted shortly afterwards. Usually big cities don’t get that much wildlife action, which is why things like botanic gardens were created – to make sure things didn’t get too urban. “The 385-acre Garden features 23 display gardens and three native habitats, uniquely situated on nine islands surrounded by lakes.” It sounds wonderful. I haven’t been there yet, but I’m in Chicago often enough that I will make a visit sooner or later. Once I go, I’ll leave a comment on this post with my observations. There are three core components to what the Chicago Botanic Garden does: collections, education, and research. There are job opportunities that touch on all three of areas, but most of the current openings are geared towards the education side.

Jobs for People Who Stop and Smell the Flowers

The good news is that the Chicago Botanic Garden has a wide variety of employment opportunities for new college grads. The bad news is that you have to look in a few different places to find them. That’s not really bad news though, because we’ve done all the hard work for you. Everything can be accessed from their Jobs page, which includes permanent, year-round positions at the Chicago Botanic Garden. There is only one job in this category that would be considered entry-level, and it’s as a Part-Time Horticultural Specialist, Plant Information Service (it’s 25 hours per week).

The next place to look for jobs is on the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Seasonal Employment page. Many of these jobs are actually perfectly suited to new grads, so they might be a great way to transition into something more permanent. Most of these jobs require or prefer a relevant college education, and they are, for the most part, only available during the summer. Current openings include: Camp CBG Instructor, College First Instructor, Plant Collections Specialist, Science First Assistant Instructor, Science First Program Assistant, Landscape Laborer, Natural Areas Land Management Assistant, Tram Tour Guide, and Visitor Services Assistant.

Finally, the Chicago Botanic Garden offers a number of different internships. That link will take you to One Day, One Internship, where we will cover the specific internships in depth. This should be of interest to new college grads because the Chicago Botanic Garden has an internship program that is specifically geared towards transitioning new college graduates into full-time employment with government agencies. That means that anyone who is looking or a full-time botany related job should not overlook internships with the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Although full-time entry-level opportunities are a bit sparse, the Chicago Botanic Garden offers quite a few interesting alternatives for a new college graduate. Their jobs website is really well done, and all of their job descriptions are well written and informative. They even put “Filled” in red text next to any job that they are no longer hiring for. That’s a really nice touch. We imagine that they’ll add more entry-level jobs periodically, so keep your eye on their website.
