Were you a baseball fan growing up? Was the floor of your room often covered in baseball cards? Did you spend more time oiling your glove than actually playing with it? Did your Mom make you throw away your favorite team’s cap because you absolutely wore it out? It’s amazing how your love of a sport can define your childhood. Harlem RBI is a non-profit organization that is cultivating that love of sport in New York City’s youths. Through the power of teams, the kids that participate in Harlem RBI’s programs are given the opportunity to play, learn, and grow – hopefully into graduates who are physically fit, confident, caring, and work-ready or headed for college.

The SEED Foundation is a nonprofit organization (and the last one we’ll be featuring this year) that builds urban public boarding schools to prepare kids in underserved communities for college. They opened their first school in Washington, D.C. in 1998 and will be opening their second in Maryland next year. Amazingly, 97% of SEED graduates go on to college, and 85% are on track to graduate after matriculating. Some of them might even be your classmates

It’s the last weekend of the year, so that means that today is our second to last non-profit job of the year. What that means, we’re not really sure. We do know that KickStart is doing some pretty cool things that you should know about. They are a non-profit organization that is aiming to help millions of people out of poverty. There are a lot of organizations that are fighting poverty, but KickStart is doing it with some pretty cool tactics.

What’s more fun than a playground? Nothing. That’s why you should work for KaBOOM! - a non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in the USA. Darell Hammond started KaBOOM! in 1995 with its first community playground build after he read about two children who suffocated while playing in an abandoned car in Washington, D.C. He wanted to make sure that a tragedy like that would never happen again. Today KaBOOM! is building hundreds of play places every year and giving children – especially those in low-income, urban neighborhoods – safe places to have fun.

Today we are taking a look at jobs with YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities, an organization based in the New York City Metropolitan Area, that is devoted to providing education, training, and other services to people with developmental and learning disabilities. There are many organizations that aim to help people with disabilities, but YAI does so with the vision of developmental and learning disabilities as its own field. Think back 4 years to when you were applying to college. Did you have to deal with the problem of too many cooks in the kitchen? By the time applications were due did you just want to be left alone by your parents, school counselors, admissions consultants, SAT tutors, teachers, friends, and alumni connections? Although many students are overwhelmed by having too much support during the college admissions process, there is a significant population of low-income students who forgo college because they don’t have anyone to help them apply. They weren’t raised in a college-going culture – their parents never went to college, their school counselors aren’t properly trained, and they can’t afford tutors and consultants.

Between 1997 and 2005, Living Lands and Waters employees and volunteers have pulled 15,991 tires, 63 bicycles, 1 mannequin hand, 397 tons of metal, 545 refrigerators, and 30 messages-in-bottles from our waterways. Sadly, that’s just a small sample of the things that they’ve removed from rivers like the Mighty Mississippi.
Living Lands and Waters was founded by a man who made it his mission to singlehandedly clean up the river behind his house. That river just happened to be the Mississippi. Chad Pregracke has documented the story of his crusade to clean up America’s waters and his formation of Living Lands and Waters in his autobiography From the Bottom Up
. After reading this book, we thought that Living Lands and Waters would be another great organization to feature during our weekend postings of non-profit jobs.

One amazing thing about the college experience is how much more tech savvy you become in just a few short years. It’s hard to imagine getting through college without the help of tools such as the Internet that were developed by universities and government entities for research purposes. Although technological innovation still occurs at institutions of higher learning, there is a clear lack of integration, standardization, and collaboration between these institutions when it comes to information technology infrastructure. While for-profit companies often have the business-driven incentive to standardize technology, non-profit educational institutions typically overlook the power of a shared infrastructure.

Have you visited your college’s art museum lately? Gone to a student theatre production? Explored the library and looked at an exhibit on rare books? These are opportunities that you might be taking for granted, but many families have limited access to the cultural institutions that are commonplace on many college campuses.
Cool Culture is making New York City’s cultural institutions more accessible to low-income families. A solid education must extend beyond what kids learn in school, but visiting museums, wildlife centers, zoos, and botanical gardens can be both cost prohibitive and intimidating for a family with limited means. By building partnerships with many of these institutions, Cool Culture is able to offer a Family Pass that grants low-income families access to 71 cultural institutions in New York City. Member families are also provided with “a quarterly publication that provides a borough-by-borough listing of cultural attractions, including practical information on hours and public transportation, as well as a calendar of events especially geared toward families and young children.”

Everybody needs to do something to make the world a better place, so we want to do our part by bringing attention to great entry-level jobs at charitable organizations.
Did you know that eating wild salmon is the best way to save wild salmon? It seems counterintuitive, but that’s the word that Save Our Wild Salmon is trying to spread. Their goal is to restore sustainable runs of Pacific salmon with a focus on the Columbia-Snake River Basin. Unfortunately, there is a lot more action needed to save our wild runs of King, Coho, and Sockeye Salmon and Steelhead than choosing to eat wild fish, but that’s the best way for an average Joe to make a difference.
