I don’t know if you’ve ever spent anytime on the Appalachian Trail, but if you haven’t, you should. The trail stretches from Georgia to Maine, while the range of mountains touches as far south as Alabama and as far north as Newfoundland. It’s 1,500 miles of natural beauty that is prime territory for naturalists and adventurers. Back in 1876 there was a club called the Appalachian Mountain Club started in Boston for people who enjoyed the range. Now the club consists of more than 12 chapters and 100,000 members—it’s the “nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization.” They’re still based in Boston, and they’ve developed into a non-profit that promotes “the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region.”

Outdoor Enthusiasts Wanted

The work that the Appalachian Mountain Club varies greatly. They fight for conservation, educate people on safe outdoors practices, maintain trails, and put on more than 8,000 trips a year. It’s a great organization that spans many different interest groups—it’s not just the hikers or the birdwatchers or the fisherman. It’s for everybody who loves being outdoors in the Appalachians. Full-time opportunities include Web Production Associate and Senior Online Marketing Associate (it’s pretty entry level if you have a background in online marketing), which are both based in Boston, along with Hospitality Coordinator in Bretton Woods, NH and Storehouse Supervisor in Gorham, NH. There are also seasonal opportunities in Trail Crew type positions in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. Usually when I’m looking at the job requirements to determine whether a position is suitable for new college grads, I’m looking at things like education, experience, skills, and job functions. It’s not often that I’m thinking about security clearance, but at today’s company, SPARTA, it’s essential for most of their positions. (Now, don’t worry if you don’t already have Top Secret Clearance, they still might have jobs for you as long as you didn’t get into too much trouble during your college years or before.) The reason that there’s all this talk about clearance is that SPARTA is a company whose “core business areas include strategic defense and offense systems, tactical weapons systems, and space systems” and whose “major intelligence credentials include intelligence production, computer network operations, and information assurance.”

This Is SPARTA

If you’ve spent your time in college attending peace protests, then SPARTA probably isn’t for you, but if you have a hard science or engineering background that you’d like to put to practical use, then you’ll be fascinated by the job titles that SPARTA is hiring for. Current openings include Weapons Effects Analyst, Cyberspace Analyst, and WMD Engineer (don’t worry, this job is about “supporting national efforts in developing, integrating and synchronizing capabilities to combat weapons of mass destruction”). These aren’t SPARTA’s entry level jobs, but they demonstrate what kind of projects the company is working on. They have more than 100 jobs listed right now, and quite a few of the opportunities actually are entry level. These include Integration Engineer, Software Engineer, Systems Engineer, and Linux/Unix Software Engineer. These are the only jobs that are identified as entry level, but you should definitely check out the rest of their job listings. For you to get here and read this (or for this to get to you if you’re an e-mail subscriber) a quick but complicated journey through the tubes of the Internet is necessary. In fact, to reach us by our domain name, OneDayOneJob.com, instead of our IP address (which is kind of like a telephone number for websites) takes as many as 7 steps. The story of how our daily e-mails get to our e-mail subscribers is just as complicated. As a website grows, the process becomes even more complex. One Day, One Job is on a single server (and the same server as One Day, One Internship), but a site like Facebook has many different servers. Figuring out which users to send to which servers becomes a very complicated problem. Luckily, there are companies like Dynamic Network Services to ensure that businesses and individuals don’t have to deal with the complicated issues of the Domain Name System.

A Dynamic Work Environment

That’s all you’re going to get from us on the nature of DNS. We’re nowhere near experts on the subject, and we figure that anyone considering employment at Dynamic Network Services probably doesn’t need an explanation of what the company does – at least not from us. Dynamic Network Services consists of three brands, all of which operate in similar spheres. They are DynDNS, Dynect, and DynTLD. There’s also the Dynamic Network Services lab, which is home to their beta services and research endeavors. All of the businesses are located in one office in Manchester, NH. They say there are “no bouncing rubber balls, two story gyms and definitely no organic salad bars,” but they do have a Segway, lava lamp, and a Flickr stream. They boast a casual work environment, that appears to boost creativity and even allows for some fun.

Dynamic Network Services currently has two job openings that might be a good fit for a new college graduate: Customer Support Technician and FreeBSD/Unix Systems Administrator. The Customer Support Technician appears to be a clear cut entry-level job, while the Systems Administrator opportunity is probably best left for someone who has significant experience with the systems outlined in the job description. Dynamic Network Services is also completely open to cold calls, so if you think you’d be a great addition to their team, but not in the capacities specified in their job openings, then send them a letter telling them why they need to hire you.
