Most CEOs have resumes that include business school, many of years of experience, and boring lists of financial accomplishments. How would you like to work for a company where the CEO’s proudest accomplishments are his being named Bon Appetit Chef of the Year and International Food and Beverage Forum Restauranteur of the Year? Michael Mina of the Mina Group is just that CEO – Chef Executive Officer (sorry, that is a horrible pun). Making deals, like any CEO should, Mina formed a partnership with Andre Agassi, the tennis star, in 2002 that has resulted in the launch of a line of high end concept restaurants.

Job searching can be a lot like rock climbing. There’s a goal in mind. The path isn’t always obvious. And sometimes you need to take a step backwards to continue your progress. It definitely helps to have a spotter, or belay, too (whether it be your parents, Career Services office, or us). In the end, both activities are exhausting, exhilarating, and trying. What better way to reward yourself for your hard work than… an energy bar? Sure, why not. And who is better to supply you with your post-climb (or post-interview) snack than Clif Bar & Company?

As Spring Break winds down, our thoughts return to the more serious matters in life – like Marshmallow Peeps. These wonderful creations bring about a wide range of reactions, from sheer joy to utter disgust, from curiosity to sadism. Sadism? Yes, there is a small group of people who get their jollies by placing the adorable chick or bunny shaped Peeps in the microwave to see how big they get before they explode. There is an even more disturbing group of people who take the next step and light the helpless marshmallow animals on fire. These people – if you can even call them that – are clearly on the fringe of society; however, there is hope for them to be rehabilitated as Just Born Quality Confections is hiring.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, and you told your sweetheart that you’d make a reservation and take care of the dinner plans. You forgot/procrastinated. You’re one of those people who is petrified by phone interactions. For some reason the simple task of picking up a phone and dialing a restaurant to make a reservation intimidates you to no end. Shoot, you stared at the phone for 3 hours before you built up the courage to call your date to ask him or her out in the first place. Why can’t you just make a reservation online?
If you’re going to be an effective job searcher, you should probably try to get over this phobia before your first phone interview. Calling around for reservations might be good practice, but we understand that Valentine’s Day can be stressful enough. We’ll let you off the hook just this once. You can use OpenTable.com, a site that lets you make reservations at some of the best restaurants in the country with the click of the mouse. All you need to do is enter your location and the date and time you’d like to book, and they’ll show you what’s still available in your area. It might even save you from completely blowing Valentine’s Day.

If you’ve never spent time in upstate New York or the mid-Atlantic, you probably don’t even know what Wegmans is. The One Day, One Job team is made up of Cornell kids, so we developed quite the obsession with the supermarket chain during what we call our “time on the hill.” For those of you who aren’t blessed with a Wegmans in your college town, we’ll fill you in. Wegmans is the best supermarket in the world. Wegmans is an acceptable place to take a date for dinner. Wegmans is the place to go when you decide to bake cookies at 3:00 A.M. Wegmans is the thing you miss most about college after you graduate. And in case you didn’t know, Wegmans is also one of the best places to work in America – Fortune Magazine has had them on their list of the 100 Best Places to Work for 11 straight years (#3 this year, top 10 the past 6 years).

In case you missed it, we just published an article last night called Don’t Get Stuck in the Web: Cold Calling in the Internet Age. It’s a guide to finding jobs that aren’t listed online, so we thought we’d give you a chance to put your newly learned skills to the test by focusing today’s post on a company that doesn’t even have a Careers page.
Bear Naked makes granola. Many other companies have made granola, but Bear Naked found a way to do it better. So much better that in 5 years they were able to become the #2 granola brand in the US and sell their business to Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s. Did we mention that Bear Naked founder Kelly Flatley was 23 when she started the company? The, details of the deal were not fully disclosed, but the total value of the acquisition that included Bear Naked and Gardenburger was reported at $122 million. We’re not sure what it is that made Bear Naked so successful, but we do know that their products taste great, are good for you, and have excellent packaging. We think they must have some pretty smart people working for them too.

Happy New Year’s Eve! We hope you enjoy the night, since you’ve got a lot of resolutions (hopefully some related to your job search) to start tomorrow. For those of you who don’t want to start the New Year hungover, we have an idea for a delicious non-alcoholic beverage and possibly a job too. Martinelli’s is turning 140 this year, and you should celebrate by cracking open a bottle of their famous sparkling cider. Unfortunately, if you want to apply for a job at Martinelli’s, you’re going to have to do it the same way their first employees did in the 19th century. They only accept resumes through snail mail. There are no job listings on their site, but it is reassuring that they actually have an employment page on the site – even if it only lists the address to send your resume too. We apologize for another short post, but we’ve got some sparking cider to drink.

Although the fro-yo craze died more than a decade ago, there seems to be a resurgence on many college campuses. We think it might be related to the law of physics/nutritional science that says: if a college student piles 6 toppings on a serving of non-fat, low-calorie soft serve frozen yogurt, the calories don’t count. Unfortunately, these students often overlook the corresponding rule that the calories from all the booze you drink in college are doubled.
