Bag Borrow or Steal is a subscription service that enables you to “borrow” designer handbags and jewelry. Most kids beg their parents to take them to the zoo. Animals are exciting. They move. They eat. They make sounds. They smell bad. Plants have none of those appeal factors. Plants don’t move, they grow. They absorb their nutrients. They’re soundless. And they smell good (most of them anyways). To most kids that spells B-O-R-I-N-G. The zoo is an 86-minute comedy movie, while a botanical garden is 142 minutes of Academy Award winning cinematic genius. It might take a little growing up to appreciate plants for all they’re worth, but when you really start to observe plants, it’s hard not to start to enjoy their “personality.” Maybe that wasn’t the best way to start off today’s post, since there’s a good chance that those of our readers who will actually want these jobs have loved flora since they were old enough to crawl around their parents’ garden. You’re driving home from college to spend a night with your family before you head to the airport the next morning to go on your final Spring Break with 11 of your closest friends. You’re behind schedule because you waited 45 minutes for some kid that you said you’d give a ride because he lives in the same town as you, only to get a call from him saying he left yesterday and didn’t need a ride anymore. It started snowing about 15 minutes into your drive, and you’ve been going 45 MPH on the highway the whole time. It’s dark and you’re gripping the steering wheel so tight that your fingers are numb. You see road flares ahead and can see that a snow plow has been hit by a tractor-trailer. The highway is closed, and you have no idea how you’re going to figure out how to get home on back roads. Luckily you have a Dash Express. It tells you that the detour that everyone else is taking is also backed up because of an accident, and it gives you two other alternate routes to get back on the highway past the closure. It also tells you that the coffee shop coming up on your right isn’t worth stopping for because there’s a better one a mile down the road. Maybe you will make it home tonight after all. When we first heard about Current, all we knew was that we didn’t get it. To clarify - not only did our cable provider not offer the Current tv channel, but we also didn’t understand what Current was all about. We did realize that Current was targeted towards young people and had a wealth of job openings, so we knew that we had to keep digging. Our research led us to a great article about Current on ReadWriteWeb which helped us get a better understanding of Current’s market positioning and reason for existence - being the place where the Internet meets television. It makes sense; just looking at Google Trends you can see how much television watching drives searches on the Internet. Anyways, Current has 24/7 programming that relies on user-generated content and tight integration with their website. Even some of the most successful people in the world got in trouble for things like underage drinking, public urination, or throwing a party that got a bit too loud. These are the types of things that can cause mild embarrassment and a few short-term headaches, but probably won’t ruin your life (as long as you don’t add them to your resume). During the past decade there has been a new indiscretion that has become popular with college students. A lot of people say that job searching is like dating. That metaphor has been played out, and we’re not going to write an article on How to Use Google to Find a Girlfriend. We are going to talk about how you can use your surplus of Valentine’s Day love to find a job or a date at eHarmony, since randomly poking people you think are cute on Facebook isn’t going to get you a date (nor will doing the equivalent on LinkedIn get you a job). eHarmony is a dating site that matches people based on a scientific approach to compatibility. We’ve never used it, but the couples on their commercials seem pretty darned happy; moreover, on average, 90 people get married from eHarmony every day. With so much success, there has been an upcropping of sites that claim to be “the eHarmony of jobs,” but we’re pretty skeptical of this approach. If most companies can’t even put together good job descriptions, how can they be expected to write an organizational profile that will yield accurate results when put into a compatibility algorithm? Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, and you told your sweetheart that you’d make a reservation and take care of the dinner plans. You forgot/procrastinated. You’re one of those people who is petrified by phone interactions. For some reason the simple task of picking up a phone and dialing a restaurant to make a reservation intimidates you to no end. Shoot, you stared at the phone for 3 hours before you built up the courage to call your date to ask him or her out in the first place. Why can’t you just make a reservation online?
If you’re going to be an effective job searcher, you should probably try to get over this phobia before your first phone interview. Calling around for reservations might be good practice, but we understand that Valentine’s Day can be stressful enough. We’ll let you off the hook just this once. You can use OpenTable.com, a site that lets you make reservations at some of the best restaurants in the country with the click of the mouse. All you need to do is enter your location and the date and time you’d like to book, and they’ll show you what’s still available in your area. I first learned about ProFlowers during my freshman year of college. I didn’t have a Valentine, but I wanted to send my mom flowers to let her know that although I had moved away, I hadn’t forgotten about her. During my junior year, I finally got a girlfriend and realized that I was in the awkward situation of having to do Valentine’s Day only a month into my new relationship. I really liked this girl, so I wanted to do my best to impress her. I had an exam and an essay due on the 15th, but that wasn’t going to stop me from executing my plan for a perfect first meaningful Valentine’s Day. The only easy part was picking out an arrangement from ProFlowers and having them delivered directly to her dorm room. I barely got everything I had to do done as the day flew by, and my chronically over-punctual self had to delay picking my new girlfriend up for our date by half an hour. Statistics in college is painful. It’s dry. It’s long. It pretty much sucks. Because of our high sample size, we can say that, with a high p-value, about most college stats courses. It’s really a shame, because statistical literacy is one of the most useful things you can pick up in your undergraduate years. It’ll change the way you think about politics and sports. It’ll change the way you read a newspaper. It will even make you question whether the prescription that your campus health clinic gave you is worth filling. We were forwarded an e-mail (we were about 4th down the line) by a friend, and we wanted to share this excellent opportunity with our readers, since it can’t be found anywhere else on the Internet. Minds Matter is a not-for-profit organization that brings high-achieving and motivated high schools students from low-income families together with dedicated mentors to achieve academic excellence and expand educational horizons. BAE Systems is a global defence (they’re British) and aerospace company. They are quite huge, employing close to 100,000 people across the world, which means that they do an enormous amount of entry-level hiring. BAE Systems operates in a wide range of businesses - from land armaments to regional aircraft, from military air solutions to communications and electronic warfare systems. Their timeline of milestones will give you a better idea of the specifics of what they do. BAE Systems is probably not the best fit if you participated in a peace protest during college, but if you want to be in the industry that is pushing the bounds of engineering, it’s hard to overlook defense. The Super Bowl is over, which is heartbreaking for all you football fans. I’d make reference to the outcome of how either the Pats pulled off a perfect season or Eli Manning finally lived up to his last name and got himself a ring, but I wrote this post a few days in advance because I’m in Costa Rica fishing. I probably only watched half the game before going to bed so that I can wake up at 5 AM to get on a boat. Whether you hit the multiplex with your friends, had them over to watch a rental, or sat alone and watched in your room as you languished through your awkward stage (everyone has one), Friday nights in Middle School always seemed to revolve around movies. To get a rental, you’d have to beg your Mom to take you to Blockbuster. Then you’d have to lobby her on why you were mature enough to rent an R-rated movie, despite the fact that you just made it to legal age for a PG-13. Those days are long gone, and not just because you’re an adult now. Now, you either wait a couple days for the mailman to deliver your movie or you sit for 10 minutes while you download it. When I was a kid in elementary school, our teacher asked us to have a book at our desk to read during short periods of downtime. If a lesson finished a little early and she couldn’t think of something to do with a class of fourth graders, we picked up our books and started reading. Most kids had fun story books to read, but for some reason (probably because it was already in my desk and I didn’t feel like finding another book) my book was a pocket dictionary. While other kids were reading about the adventures of some imaginary character, I was looking up words to craft my comebacks when I was inevitably made fun of. Organic food is back. First it was for hippies. Then it was for wealthy foodies. Now it’s hitting the mainstream with many every day supermarkets having an organic aisle. In just a few short centuries, we’ve come full circle from all organic farming (there were no other options), to chemically dependent factory farming, back to organic. Organics may be a little more expensive, but there is a growing population that is willing to pay a premium for food that they consider healthier, more humane, and better tasting. Organic Valley is a cooperative between 1201 farmer-owners that allows small organic farmers to combine their growing power and sell products on a scale that is usually reserved for industrialized farming operations.
