RehabCare

by Willy Franzen on December 20, 2007

RehabCare Logo

The Sunday after Thanksgiving of my Junior year in college, I made the 4 hour drive back to school to face the onslaught of papers, group projects, and exams that professors love to assign at the end of the semester. I wasn’t back at my house more than 10 minutes when my roommates called me outside to watch as they turned on the Christmas lights they had put up while I was gone. As they turned on the lights, I took a step back to take in the beautiful icicles and animatronic reindeer that adorned our roof. My foot slipped, my body slid down the usually grassy, but on this night muddy, slope that sat between the sidewalk and the street, and my hand came down on the sidewalk like a sack of rocks.

Domini Social Investments

by Willy Franzen on December 19, 2007

Domini LogoWhat are your principles? How do they affect the way that you go about your every day life? Depending on what’s important to you, it can be extremely difficult to live up to your own standards in everything that you do. Everyday decisions are much more complex when you have to think about whether your shirt was made in a sweatshop, whether that hamburger you are about to eat was humanely raised, and whether your investment portfolio is profiting from sales of harmful and addictive tobacco products. Some people don’t really care about these issues, while to others they are of grave importance. Not long ago, you might have had to sequester yourself from society to live what you believe to be a socially conscious life. Now there are thousands of entrepreneurs who are creating products and services that will help make living a life that meets your standards easier.

Pinkberry

by Willy Franzen on December 18, 2007

Pinkberry LogoAlthough the fro-yo craze died more than a decade ago, there seems to be a resurgence on many college campuses. We think it might be related to the law of physics/nutritional science that says: if a college student piles 6 toppings on a serving of non-fat, low-calorie soft serve frozen yogurt, the calories don’t count. Unfortunately, these students often overlook the corresponding rule that the calories from all the booze you drink in college are doubled.

Hydra

by Willy Franzen on December 17, 2007

Hydra Media LogoIf you aren’t a big TechCrunch reader, you may not have noticed that we’re in the midst of another Internet startup boom. Some are calling it a “bubble,” while others say that the growth is for real this time. We think both sides have valid arguments, but we have noticed that this time around the online advertising revenue that is driving this boom is based on real sales results.

Back before 2000, most advertising networks were based on a CPM (Cost per Mille/Thousand) or CPC (Cost per Click) model, meaning that advertisers paid every time someone saw or clicked their ad. Those campaigns often had mixed results depending on a number of factors. Often companies spent big money on advertising that didn’t lead to sales. When they eventually realized that they were wasting their money, they stopped advertising. This put a lot of people out of business. Now many companies are making the move to a CPA (Cost per Acquisition/Action) model that only charges advertisers when they get results.

KaBOOM!

Kaboom Logo

What’s more fun than a playground? Nothing. That’s why you should work for KaBOOM! - a non-profit organization that envisions a great place to play within walking distance of every child in the USA. Darell Hammond started KaBOOM! in 1995 with its first community playground build after he read about two children who suffocated while playing in an abandoned car in Washington, D.C. He wanted to make sure that a tragedy like that would never happen again. Today KaBOOM! is building hundreds of play places every year and giving children – especially those in low-income, urban neighborhoods – safe places to have fun.

YAI/NIPD

YAI/NIPD Logo

Welcome to another non-profit weekend at One Day, One Job. If you aren’t already aware, every Saturday and Sunday we shift our focus to entry-level job opportunities in the non-profit sector. We do this because we want to help our readers find meaningful work, while at the same time doing our part to make the world a better place.

Today we are taking a look at jobs with YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities, an organization based in the New York City Metropolitan Area, that is devoted to providing education, training, and other services to people with developmental and learning disabilities. There are many organizations that aim to help people with disabilities, but YAI does so with the vision of developmental and learning disabilities as its own field. By treating their mission as its own profession, YAI is able to help people make the most of themselves whether they are YAI’s clients or employees.

Insomniac Games

by Willy Franzen on December 14, 2007

Insomniac Games LogoDo you remember the Far Side cartoons by Gary Larson? There was one with two parents watching their son playing a video game. Both parents had thought bubbles coming from their heads with dreams of classified ads listing high-paying video game testing job after high-paying video game testing job. Their dream has come true. A career in video games is a reality for today’s college graduates. Unfortunately, those video game jobs aren’t always as dreamy as they might seem. The industry is known for a high rate of burnout; however, Insomniac Games is not one of the culprits – for the past 3 years they have been in the Top 10 of HR Magazine’s List of the Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America.

Ning

by Willy Franzen on December 13, 2007

Ning LogoSocial networking has become kind of a big thing over the past few years. MySpace and Facebook have been duking it out, and it’s pretty clear that Facebook has taken the lead as the social network of choice (especially for our demographic of college aged job seekers). But what about other options? Nobody is going to beat Facebook head to head at this point, but there are some interesting companies out there that have put together really cool social networking products. Ning is one of those companies.

US Forest Service

by Willy Franzen on December 11, 2007

US Forest Service Logo“I was young, and I thought I was tough and I knew it was beautiful and I was a little bit crazy but hadn’t noticed it yet.” Those are the words of Norman Maclean, from his collection of autobiographical fictional works entitled A River Runs Through It and Other Stories (the “other stories” are “USFS 1919: The Ranger, the Cook, and a Hole in the Sky” and “Logging and Pimping and ‘Your Pal, Jim’”). If Maclean’s words speak to you, a career in the Forest Service might be just the right move for you after graduation.

Burton

by Willy Franzen on December 10, 2007

Burton Logo“Many Burton employees will snag freshies first thing in the morning before coming in to work during the winter.” Being non “riders,” we’re not quite sure what that means, but it sounds like Burton is a place where people love what they do. As if that wasn’t enough, their logo matches our color scheme, so we had to do a post about the world’s first snowboard factory.

Burton currently has three great entry-level opportunities that are perfect for someone fresh out of college. In their Irvine, CA location there are two positions: they are hiring a PR Coordinator (preferably someone who is positive, enthusiastic – especially about snowboarding, and a great communicator) and a US Apparel Sales Manager (this time they’re looking for somebody who is independent, investigative, and into traveling a lot). At their headquarters in Burlington, VT, they have an opening in product development as an Assistant Product Manger – Burton Binding for someone with excellent Adobe Illustrator skills and basic knowledge of how plastic injected parts are manufactured. The cool thing about these postings is that the job descriptions are honestly written (one job description that is sadly not entry-level used the word “stoked”) and provide the goals they have set for their future hire. Burton wants to hire passionate people, and that is certainly reflected in the way they write their job postings.

Insitu LogoNot too long ago, the only unmanned aerial vehicles were planes flown by women. Now we live in a world where planes can fly themselves. We thought we were pretty high-tech when we set up a blog, coded our own template, and figured out how to optimize our site for Google; however, the companies that design, develop, and produce autonomous aircraft put us to absolute shame.

Federal Reserve Bank of New York

by Willy Franzen on December 5, 2007

Federal Reserve Bank of New York LogoThe dollar may be going through a rough stretch right now, but that’s only another reason to be interested in monetary policy. If you’re a sucker for reading Milton Friedman and John Maynard Keynes, we think we’ve found a great career opportunity for you; however, if you’re supporting Ron Paul (and his abolish the Fed stance) in the Republican primaries, you can probably pass on this one.

The Federal Reserve, as the central bank of the US, directs the country’s monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York is one of 12 regional banks that acts as a fiscal agent of the United States Treasury. If you’re the kind of person who’d like to work at the Fed, we’re not telling you anything you don’t already know. If you aren’t, but you’d like to learn more, why not check out the Wikipedia entry on the Federal Reserve System? Many companies that are hiring at the entry-level are more concerned with raw talent than acquired knowledge, but jobs at the Fed appear to be quite knowledge intensive. Applicants probably should have majored in Accounting, Business, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Management, or a similar field. So, if you’re drawn to finance by your love of economics, but not looking for the investment banking lifestyle, take a look Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s job opportunities for new college graduates.

College Summit

by Willy Franzen on December 2, 2007

College Summit Logo

Think back 4 years to when you were applying to college. Did you have to deal with the problem of too many cooks in the kitchen? By the time applications were due did you just want to be left alone by your parents, school counselors, admissions consultants, SAT tutors, teachers, friends, and alumni connections? Although many students are overwhelmed by having too much support during the college admissions process, there is a significant population of low-income students who forgo college because they don’t have anyone to help them apply. They weren’t raised in a college-going culture – their parents never went to college, their school counselors aren’t properly trained, and they can’t afford tutors and consultants.

Living Lands and Waters

by Willy Franzen on December 1, 2007

Living Lands and Waters Logo

Between 1997 and 2005, Living Lands and Waters employees and volunteers have pulled 15,991 tires, 63 bicycles, 1 mannequin hand, 397 tons of metal, 545 refrigerators, and 30 messages-in-bottles from our waterways. Sadly, that’s just a small sample of the things that they’ve removed from rivers like the Mighty Mississippi.

Living Lands and Waters was founded by a man who made it his mission to singlehandedly clean up the river behind his house. That river just happened to be the Mississippi. Chad Pregracke has documented the story of his crusade to clean up America’s waters and his formation of Living Lands and Waters in his autobiography From the Bottom Up. After reading this book, we thought that Living Lands and Waters would be another great organization to feature during our weekend postings of non-profit jobs.

Under Armour

by Willy Franzen on November 30, 2007

Under Armour LogoYou know the feeling – it’s hot, wet, sticky and feels like it weighs about 6 lbs. So you change shirts during practice. Twice. That’s three shirts in one practice. You practice 5 days a week. That’s a lot of laundry. How would you like to work for a company founded out of a strong disdain for wet t-shirts (no, not the kind you might find on Spring Break)? Kevin Plank started Under Armour in 1995 with the idea of making better t-shirts to wear under his uniform while he played for the University of Maryland Football Team. With a great product and a little luck, Under Armour has become an essential piece of an athlete’s wardrobe in what was seemingly a saturated market.

Zillow LogoWhen you started college, the Goldilocks economy (not too hot, not too cold, but just right) was cooking along with a nice balance of fear and optimism. You knew from freshman year that you wanted to get into real estate because, as they say, they’re never making any more of it. Well if you’ve been paying any attention to CNBC lately, real estate is not the place to be looking for an entry-level job. So how can you find a company in the industry that hasn’t cut out new hiring because of the down market?

LECG

by Willy Franzen on November 26, 2007

LECG LogoSay you and your college roommate are having a disagreement over whether Uncle Jesse from Full House’s last name was Cochran or Katsopolis. 10 years ago, resolving such an important dispute would require either endless hours of watching Full House reruns or the consultation of an astutely knowledgeable third party – maybe your brother who has no job and watches tv on the couch all day. Today a quick Google or Wikipedia search can resolve the dispute (the answer is both – John Stamos asked that his character’s name be changed after the first season from Cochran to Katsopolis to represent his Greek heritage).

When businesses, legislatures, arbitration panels, and regulatory boards have important disputes like your hypothetical dispute above, they can’t just use Google to find the expert opinions and advice that they need. LECG is a firm that provides experts in a wide variety of fields. LECG’s experts provide independent expert testimony and analysis, original authoritative studies, and strategic consulting services to a list of clients that includes Fortune Global 500 corporations, major law firms, and local, state, and federal governments and agencies.

One amazing thing about the college experience is how much more tech savvy you become in just a few short years. It’s hard to imagine getting through college without the help of tools such as the Internet that were developed by universities and government entities for research purposes. Although technological innovation still occurs at institutions of higher learning, there is a clear lack of integration, standardization, and collaboration between these institutions when it comes to information technology infrastructure. While for-profit companies often have the business-driven incentive to standardize technology, non-profit educational institutions typically overlook the power of a shared infrastructure.

Plimoth Plantation and Colonial Williamsburg

by Willy Franzen on November 22, 2007

The First ThanksgivingHappy Thanksgiving! A lot of blogs are taking the day off today, but we thought we’d stay true to our name. Thanksgiving is another day, so we have another job.

Do you wish you could go back to the First Thanksgiving at Plymouth Plantation or The Virginia Colony? Do you long for the days before electricity? When Thanksgiving turkey came from the wild? When your livelihood actually depended on the success of the Fall harvest?

After you graduate, why not go back in time? Both Plimoth Plantation (yes, that’s how they spell it) and Colonial Williamsburg have job opportunities in their living history museums. If you love history, why not recreate it to help others learn? You can live like our forefathers did at the First Thanksgiving and get paid for it. Plimoth Plantation is currently hiring an Apprentice in 17th-Century Carpentry, while Colonial Williamsburg is hiring and auditioning for a number of positions. Both of these living museums have other job options, but why would you want to do anything other than be a colonial?
