The New Teacher Project

by Willy Franzen on January 19, 2008

The New Teacher Project Logo

This post was written by Alyssa Godesky as one of her entries in our Find a Job, Win a Wii contest, which she ended up winning. We don’t have any contests going on right now, but if you’d like to write a post for us and get your name in the spotlight, e-mail us at info@onedayonejob.com

Are you interested in a job in education, but teaching in a classroom just isn’t for you? Entry-level jobs in education that are done outside of the classroom are tough to find, but they’re out there. The New Teacher Project is a fine example. The New Teacher Project is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains teachers to put them in classrooms where they are badly needed.

Elgato Systems

Elgato Systems Logo

Today’s post is probably a shot in the dark, but we love the company’s products, and it’s still MacWorld Expo week, so we’re going to write about them anyways. What Elgato Systems does is simple – they make products that allow you to watch television on your Mac. Their hardware devices are plug and play and their software is absolutely killer. It’s also a DVR, so you can record your shows, export them to your iPod and watch them wherever you want. You can even record Jeopardy!, export it, send it to a friend, and play over the phone – not that we’ve ever done that.

Associated Press

Associated Press Logo

On Tuesday we talked about becoming a blogger and sneaking into the journalism profession through the back door, but today we’re going to talk about the “legit route.” The Associated Press is world’s largest and oldest news-gathering organization, and for that reason it’s probably one of the most respected names in journalism.

Apple

Apple Logo

Yesterday, we spent a good part of the day camped in front of our computers reading MacRumors.com’s live blog updates from the Apple Keynote at MacWorld Expo San Francisco. In case you aren’t a “macfanboy,” you should know that they announced the MacBook Air, updates to the iPhone and iPod Touch software, improved AppleTV functionality with downloadable movie rentals, and a wireless router/storage/backup device called Time Capsule. For some who were expecting more, yesterday’s products announcements were quite a disappointment, while for others, it was like Christmas morning all over again. Anyways, today’s event was a great display of how even huge companies can remain innovative, and that got us thinking about how a new college grad can snag a job at Apple.

MLB Trade Rumors

by Willy Franzen on January 15, 2008

MLB Trade Rumors LogoTypically, our daily posts focus on the best entry-level jobs for new college graduates. Occasionally we’ll talk about part-time gigs or freelance opportunities if they look especially interesting (and we’re saving internships for our next project… shhh), but we usually like to stay focused on full time jobs for new grads. Well, today we’re going to feature a “job” that is not paid, nor is it full time, but it is a great opportunity that could definitely help you pursue a passion for sports journalism.

The Weather Channel

The Weather Channel Logo

Here at the One Day, One Job headquarters, we’re hunkering down in preparation for a Nor’easter that is about to drop snow on us like Paula Dean drops another stick of butter into one of her recipes. Of course there are no snow days in the blogosphere, so we figured we’d go with what Mother Nature gives us and discuss entry-level job opportunities at The Weather Channel.

National Trust for Historic Preservation

by Willy Franzen on January 13, 2008

National Trust for Historic Preservation Logo

On many college campuses there’s a constant battle between the old and the new. We’re not talking about Senior-Freshmen rivalries – that’s so high school. We’re talking about the state of constant construction that is as much a part of going to college as wearing flip flops in the shower. Administrators and trustees are left to decide whether it is better to make do with the quirky inadequacies of a building from a century ago, or to knock it down and build a new monstrosity in the latest architectural fashion. There is a fine balance that needs to be achieved between architectural and historic integrity and function. Unfortunately, it seems more and more common that campus decision-makers are deciding in favor of state of the art facilities built atop the graves of their obsolete predecessors (I guess you know what One Day, One Job’s stand on this issue is).

Sylvan Beach Foundation

by Willy Franzen on January 12, 2008

Sylvan Beach Foundation Logo

When we came across today’s non-profit organization, we were surprised at what we found. We saw the name Sylvan Beach Foundation and expected an organization focused on environmental conservation – something like saving sea turtles or preventing land erosion. Instead, we found an organization that is changing the lives of marginalized young men through social enterprises. We’re not sure where the name Sylvan Beach Foundation came from, but we can’t see how it relates to the small town in upstate New York called Sylvan Beach which was founded by a pirate named Captain Steamer (that name is funny, right?).

Mercury Mambo

Mercury Mambo Logo

We’ve talked about quite a few companies with advertising jobs since we launched, but Mercury Mambo is the first with a truly unique niche. They specialize in targeted Hispanic marketing strategies. It’s pretty obvious why that’s a smart business to be in, and it’s been paying off for Mercury Mambo – they were featured in the Inc. 500 for 2007 with 806.5% 3-year revenue growth.

Ask Sunday

by Willy Franzen on January 10, 2008

Ask Sunday LogoLife is filled with things you don’t want to do. As a college student, you probably have a lot of free time but still avoid mundane tasks (like laundry) until the last possible minute. At some point in your life those daily tasks pile up enough to keep you from being able to do what you want to do with your life. Some things like brushing your teeth and showering are absolutely unavoidable, but others you can pay someone to do. You can hire a cleaning lady, send your laundry out, and buy prepared foods, but that can become expensive. There are other daily tasks that you need done, but that can be done from anywhere. Ask Sunday is a service that allows you to send those tasks overseas for a really cheap price ($29 for 30 monthly 20-minutes tasks). So for less than you probably spend on booze in a weekend, you can have your own virtual assistant.

RapLeaf

RapLeaf Logo

Let’s say instead of giving away a Wii over the holiday season, we chose to scalp it on Craigslist. Three interested parties e-mail us with offers to meet up for the exchange. We don’t want to get scammed, and we also want to avoid wasting our time going to meet someone who doesn’t show. How would we find out if the people who e-mailed us are trustworthy? We could try Googling their e-mail address and see what comes up, or we could use RapLeaf to check their reputations.

BasePoint Analytics

by Willy Franzen on January 8, 2008

BasePoint Analytics LogoDid you want to be a detective growing up? Were you inspired by Inspector Gadget (ok, he was a buffoon, but his niece Penny was a hell of a sleuth)? Did you play with Spy Tech toys? Do you watch CSI Miami and think that you should have followed your childhood dreams? There’s something really cool about solving mysteries. What’s even cooler is solving them before they happen. The police usually can’t do that, because of those pesky civil liberties; however, BasePoint Analytics, located in Carlsbad, CA, is a company that prevents fraud before it happens. Through the scientific method they have developed a number of products and services that allows banks and mortgage lenders to identify fraud before they get burned by falsified applications. BasePoint’s tools enable financial institutions to accept well-qualified applicants more quickly, while giving further scrutiny to applications that are flagged by BasePoint Analytics’ models.

jetBlue Airways

by Willy Franzen on January 7, 2008

JetBlue Airways Logo

Well, we made it back home from vacation, but not without 3 hours of sitting on the runway due to Curacao’s random decision to close their airspace. Our pilot told us that we had to file a flight plan through Venezuelan airspace instead, and Venezuela’s being run by an unfriendly dictator didn’t make that the easiest – or fastest – process. By the time our new flight plan was filed, Curacao had lifted the flight ban and we finally went on our merry way. As painful as it was to be on the runway for 3 hours, jetBlue made it pretty bearable. They gave us drinks and snacks, although they did plead with us to take it easy, as they were running out and did not have catering services at this airport. Of course the request to back off the goodies created a run on the galley, but the flight attendants were still able to do a full snack and beverage service in-flight despite the excessive pre-flight demand. It was also nice to have the most legroom in coach and a little tv in the seatbacks in front of us. Another One Day, One Jobber flew a different airline out of the same airport at the same time and had a much more miserable experience – no food, no movies, and too much air conditioning with no blankets. jetBlue has been ranked by Conde Nast Traveler as America’s Best Domestic Airline for 6 straight years now, and their unparalleled devotion to customer service is the reason.

Dogs for the Deaf

by Willy Franzen on January 6, 2008

Dogs for the Deaf Logo

Today’s the last day of vacation for the One Day, One Job team, so we’re going to be pretty brief, but we still think this looks like an awesome job for our dog loving entry-level job searchers. If it’s not evident by their name, Dogs for the Deaf is a non-profit organization that rescues homeless dogs and professionally trains them to assist people who have hearing impairments. You’ve probably heard of “seeing eye dogs,” but there are so many more people than just blind people who can use the help of a canine friend. Sometimes the assistance that these dogs offer can even be life saving.

Harlem RBI

Harlem RBI Logo

Were you a baseball fan growing up? Was the floor of your room often covered in baseball cards? Did you spend more time oiling your glove than actually playing with it? Did your Mom make you throw away your favorite team’s cap because you absolutely wore it out? It’s amazing how your love of a sport can define your childhood. Harlem RBI is a non-profit organization that is cultivating that love of sport in New York City’s youths. Through the power of teams, the kids that participate in Harlem RBI’s programs are given the opportunity to play, learn, and grow – hopefully into graduates who are physically fit, confident, caring, and work-ready or headed for college.

Tesla Motors

Tesla Motors Logo

So, we’re still on vacation here at One Day, One Job. We didn’t tell you, but for the past week our daily posts have been coming from a tropical island with poor wireless Internet coverage. We thought there’d be at least one rainy day where we could finish off our posts and act like no vacation ever happened, but, unfortunately for you, the weather has been beautiful. On that note, today’s post is going to be a quick run down of what Tesla Motors does and why they look like a cool company for college seniors to research for career opportunities.

Martinelli’s

Martinelli’s Logo

Happy New Year’s Eve! We hope you enjoy the night, since you’ve got a lot of resolutions (hopefully some related to your job search) to start tomorrow. For those of you who don’t want to start the New Year hungover, we have an idea for a delicious non-alcoholic beverage and possibly a job too. Martinelli’s is turning 140 this year, and you should celebrate by cracking open a bottle of their famous sparkling cider. Unfortunately, if you want to apply for a job at Martinelli’s, you’re going to have to do it the same way their first employees did in the 19th century. They only accept resumes through snail mail. There are no job listings on their site, but it is reassuring that they actually have an employment page on the site – even if it only lists the address to send your resume too. We apologize for another short post, but we’ve got some sparking cider to drink.

SEED Foundation

SEED Foundation Logo

The SEED Foundation is a nonprofit organization (and the last one we’ll be featuring this year) that builds urban public boarding schools to prepare kids in underserved communities for college. They opened their first school in Washington, D.C. in 1998 and will be opening their second in Maryland next year. Amazingly, 97% of SEED graduates go on to college, and 85% are on track to graduate after matriculating. Some of them might even be your classmates

It’s the last weekend of the year, so that means that today is our second to last non-profit job of the year. What that means, we’re not really sure. We do know that KickStart is doing some pretty cool things that you should know about. They are a non-profit organization that is aiming to help millions of people out of poverty. There are a lot of organizations that are fighting poverty, but KickStart is doing it with some pretty cool tactics.

American Apparel

American Apparel Logo

They’ve invaded your Facebook with pics of half naked emo-hipster models (by the way, we’re dorks and had to look up the definitions of emo and hipster on Wikipedia, kind of like when Peter, Samir, and Michael Bolton look up money laundering in the dictionary in Office Space). A certain Ivy League campus in New York City has also been overrun with people dressed straight off this company’s website. Even when you win a t-shirt, it’s not Hanes or Fruit of the Loom anymore. American Apparel is attacking on all fronts. And before we go any farther, we should warn you that their site is filled with near-nudity, so don’t go browsing it in a public place or whatever.

What’s the job market look like for a new college grad who wants to go into the real estate industry? Craptastic. Unless you’ve got a great connection or know something we don’t (which is actually pretty likely), you can head for another industry to get some work experience or you can take a stab at Real Estate 2.0 jobs. We’ve already looked at Zillow.com as one company that has insulated itself from sub-prime woes by breaking away from the traditional real estate business model, and today we’re going to look at another one. Redfin is an online real estate brokerage. They currently operate in only 7 markets, but they’re gaining ground by offering new services to people who think a realtor isn’t worth 6% of a house’s final sale price.

You can argue about it like Mortimer and Randolph Duke in Trading Places, but you’ll never know which of these (or other) factors is truly driving your personal successes – or will you? Today’s company hasn’t figured out the answer to that question yet, but they’re well on their way.

Merry Christmas Eve from the One Day, One Job Team! We’re taking a little time off to celebrate the holiday, but that doesn’t mean we are going to stop giving you job ideas every day.

Every time this year, the North American Aerospace Defense Command begins tracking Santa Claus on his amazing route across the world bringing presents to good boys and girls. Typically, NORAD is responsible for ensuring that our country remains safe, but Santa’s annual feat is just so incredible that they have to pay it attention. How could you ignore a man who is able to deliver a child’s toys once every two to three-thousandths of a second?

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

by Willy Franzen on December 21, 2007

Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts LogoAt this point in December, we hope most of you are done with exams and home for Winter Break. This is a great time for you to relax, subscribe to One Day, One Job, and start looking for great job ideas. Your Mom will probably want you to figure out what you want to do after college by spending 8 hour days cruising job boards, working on your resume, and calling her friends so that you can “network.” We think you should go on vacation – even if it’s just a day trip somewhere. Expose yourself (not that way, perv) to complete strangers in places you’ve never been before. Strike up random conversations. See a cultural attraction that fascinates you. Eat a new type of ethnic cuisine. Observe everything that you experience in the context of your job search.
