As Chef from South Park so poignantly said, “There’s a time and a place for everything, and it’s called college.” Sometimes college students do stupid things, and sometimes they get caught. Even some of the most successful people in the world got in trouble for things like underage drinking, public urination, or throwing a party that got a bit too loud. These are the types of things that can cause mild embarrassment and a few short-term headaches, but probably won’t ruin your life (as long as you don’t add them to your resume). During the past decade there has been a new indiscretion that has become popular with college students. Like the others, it seems victimless (which is debatable), but the repercussions of this offense can be much more serious. What is it? Copyright infringement.
Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that addresses many of those issues that college students face when it comes to understanding how copyright works. Now, Creative Commons isn’t going to get you off the hook when you get served a DMCA notice by the RIAA or anything like that, but they are helping to spread the ideology of openness when it comes to intellectual property. No, this isn’t an excerpt from one of those spam e-mails with random words that don’t make any sense, but a small sampling of titles put out by Heldref Publications. As a non-profit publisher, Heldref Publications aims to provide a forum for scholarly discourse in the approximately 50 titles that they publish. These titles are geared towards academics in a wide range of fields, as you probably gathered from our first sentence. Those fields include “research and practice in K-12 and higher education, world affairs and political science, history, world literatures old and new, the arts, popular culture, psychology, social sciences, health, and the environment.”

Did you forget about Valentine’s Day? Did you accidentally put your ex-girlfriend’s name on the card that came with the flowers you sent your new girlfriend from ProFlowers? Did you forget to use OpenTable and end up having to take your valentine to McDonald’s? Have you still not changed your Facebook status to “In a Relationship,” even though it’s been 4 months? If so, you’re in the doghouse. Instead of focusing on the trouble you’re in and writing about jobs at a company that makes dog houses (we couldn’t find any, anyways), we’re going to talk about a company that has great entry-level jobs and might even help you get out of the dog house. How does a guy get out of the dog house? Jewelry. And for the girls, we apologize that we’ve been writing our intros from the male perspective this week, but we hope it won’t affect your outlook on the companies we’ve told you about.
Tiffany & Co. not only makes and sells fine jewelry, but they also have a wide range of open entry-level jobs. If you’re not familiar with Tiffany & Co., you should know that they have been one of the country’s premier jewelers and designers since 1837. Yesterday and the day before we profiled companies that not only offer great entry-level job opportunities, but also can help you with last-minute preparations for making today (or any day) special for someone you love. Today we’re going to talk about a company that has something to offer for those of you who are looking for someone to love. Speaking of which, we want your love, so become a Facebook Fan, subscribe through RSS, or join our e-mail list. You’ll get great information about entry-level careers, and we’ll get a self-esteem boost. Everybody wins.
A lot of people say that job searching is like dating. That metaphor has been played out, and we’re not going to write an article on How to Use Google to Find a Girlfriend. We are going to talk about how you can use your surplus of Valentine’s Day love to find a job or a date at eHarmony, since randomly poking people you think are cute on Facebook isn’t going to get you a date (nor will doing the equivalent on LinkedIn get you a job). eHarmony is a dating site that matches people based on a scientific approach to compatibility. We’ve never used it, but the couples on their commercials seem pretty darned happy; moreover, on average, 90 people get married from eHarmony every day. With so much success, there has been an upcropping of sites that claim to be “the eHarmony of jobs,” but we’re pretty skeptical of this approach. If most companies can’t even put together good job descriptions, how can they be expected to write an organizational profile that will yield accurate results when put into a compatibility algorithm? You’re better off reading One Day, One Job, doing your own research, and determining organizational fit yourself.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day, and you told your sweetheart that you’d make a reservation and take care of the dinner plans. You forgot/procrastinated. You’re one of those people who is petrified by phone interactions. For some reason the simple task of picking up a phone and dialing a restaurant to make a reservation intimidates you to no end. Shoot, you stared at the phone for 3 hours before you built up the courage to call your date to ask him or her out in the first place. Why can’t you just make a reservation online?
If you’re going to be an effective job searcher, you should probably try to get over this phobia before your first phone interview. Calling around for reservations might be good practice, but we understand that Valentine’s Day can be stressful enough. We’ll let you off the hook just this once. You can use OpenTable.com, a site that lets you make reservations at some of the best restaurants in the country with the click of the mouse. All you need to do is enter your location and the date and time you’d like to book, and they’ll show you what’s still available in your area. It might even save you from completely blowing Valentine’s Day.

I first learned about ProFlowers during my freshman year of college. I didn’t have a Valentine, but I wanted to send my mom flowers to let her know that although I had moved away, I hadn’t forgotten about her. During my junior year, I finally got a girlfriend and realized that I was in the awkward situation of having to do Valentine’s Day only a month into my new relationship. I really liked this girl, so I wanted to do my best to impress her. I had an exam and an essay due on the 15th, but that wasn’t going to stop me from executing my plan for a perfect first meaningful Valentine’s Day. The only easy part was picking out an arrangement from ProFlowers and having them delivered directly to her dorm room. I barely got everything I had to do done as the day flew by, and my chronically over-punctual self had to delay picking my new girlfriend up for our date by half an hour.

If you’ve never spent time in upstate New York or the mid-Atlantic, you probably don’t even know what Wegmans is. The One Day, One Job team is made up of Cornell kids, so we developed quite the obsession with the supermarket chain during what we call our “time on the hill.” For those of you who aren’t blessed with a Wegmans in your college town, we’ll fill you in. Wegmans is the best supermarket in the world. Wegmans is an acceptable place to take a date for dinner. Wegmans is the place to go when you decide to bake cookies at 3:00 A.M. Wegmans is the thing you miss most about college after you graduate. And in case you didn’t know, Wegmans is also one of the best places to work in America – Fortune Magazine has had them on their list of the 100 Best Places to Work for 11 straight years (#3 this year, top 10 the past 6 years).

Statistics in college is painful. It’s dry. It’s long. It pretty much sucks. Because of our high sample size, we can say that, with a high p-value, about most college stats courses. It’s really a shame, because statistical literacy is one of the most useful things you can pick up in your undergraduate years. It’ll change the way you think about politics and sports. It’ll change the way you read a newspaper. It will even make you question whether the prescription that your campus health clinic gave you is worth filling. By the way, when will they learn their statistics and stop asking guys whether they might be pregnant? If someone could figure out a way to bring statistics to life – to present even the driest data in an entertaining way – they’d be a millionaire. Or they’d start a non-profit organization called Gapminder.

Today we have an exclusive entry-level job in New York City for our readers! We were forwarded an e-mail (we were about 4th down the line) by a friend, and we wanted to share this excellent opportunity with our readers, since it can’t be found anywhere else on the Internet. Minds Matter is a not-for-profit organization that brings high-achieving and motivated high schools students from low-income families together with dedicated mentors to achieve academic excellence and expand educational horizons. There are only two employees (we’re not sure if that’s for the entire organization, or just the New York City chapter), an Executive Director and a Program and Development Assistant (PDA) at Minds Matter. The current PDA joined two years ago right out of college, but is leaving in the Summer for graduate school. That means Minds Matter needs a replacement. If you want to do some research on Minds Matter, their 2007 Annual Report has everything you could possibly want to know about the organization.

Since so many of our readers find out about One Day, One Job through our Facebook advertisements, we’re going to make the assumption that you have a solid idea of what Facebook is. What we want to emphasize today is how big of a company they’ve become. Based on the most recent investment in Facebook by Microsoft, Mark Zuckerberg’s creation now has a higher valuation than the Ford Motor Company. Is that justified? We can’t say, but some are pretty sure that it is. Whether Facebook is overvalued or not, they’re spending a lot of money to keep growing, and that means they’re hiring (they want to double their workforce). We can even back that up with a link to a report of Facebook’s leaked 2008 numbers.

BAE Systems is a global defence (they’re British) and aerospace company. They are quite huge, employing close to 100,000 people across the world, which means that they do an enormous amount of entry-level hiring. BAE Systems operates in a wide range of businesses – from land armaments to regional aircraft, from military air solutions to communications and electronic warfare systems. Their timeline of milestones will give you a better idea of the specifics of what they do. BAE Systems is probably not the best fit if you participated in a peace protest during college, but if you want to be in the industry that is pushing the bounds of engineering, it’s hard to overlook defense.

Whether you hit the multiplex with your friends, had them over to watch a rental, or sat alone and watched in your room as you languished through your awkward stage (everyone has one), Friday nights in Middle School always seemed to revolve around movies. To get a rental, you’d have to beg your Mom to take you to Blockbuster. Then you’d have to lobby her on why you were mature enough to rent an R-rated movie, despite the fact that you just made it to legal age for a PG-13. Those days are long gone, and not just because you’re an adult now. Now, you either wait a couple days for the mailman to deliver your movie or you sit for 10 minutes while you download it. Netflix has ruined those cherished moments of arguing with your mother about movie rentals and late fees, but I think we can all agree to forgive them.

For those who don’t attend “Blackboard schools,” Blackboard is a company that develops software to facilitate e-learning. In other words, your professor can post a syllabus, grades, announcements, and readings on the Blackboard course site. When we first considered writing a post about Blackboard, we thought we’d try to appeal to the Blackboard lovers. We know they’re out there, but after a thorough search of Facebook, it seems that this demographic isn’t yet ready to publicly declare their love for Blackboard. We were expecting a group named Blackboard Addicts Anonymous for compulsive grade checkers, but instead found a host of other Blackboard related Facebook groups.

When I was a kid in elementary school, our teacher asked us to have a book at our desk to read during short periods of downtime. If a lesson finished a little early and she couldn’t think of something to do with a class of fourth graders, we picked up our books and started reading. Most kids had fun story books to read, but for some reason (probably because it was already in my desk and I didn’t feel like finding another book) my book was a pocket dictionary. While other kids were reading about the adventures of some imaginary character, I was looking up words to craft my comebacks when I was inevitably made fun of. I wish the word w00t had existed back then, not because it would have been particularly useful in my fourth grade reading level verbal counterattacks, but because I think my classmates would have realized that reading a dictionary can’t be all bad if you can find words like w00t.

Organic food is back. First it was for hippies. Then it was for wealthy foodies. Now it’s hitting the mainstream with many every day supermarkets having an organic aisle. In just a few short centuries, we’ve come full circle from all organic farming (there were no other options), to chemically dependent factory farming, back to organic. Organics may be a little more expensive, but there is a growing population that is willing to pay a premium for food that they consider healthier, more humane, and better tasting. Organic Valley is a cooperative between 1201 farmer-owners that allows small organic farmers to combine their growing power and sell products on a scale that is usually reserved for industrialized farming operations. Yes, it’s true. One Day, One Job finally has a post for the aggies out there (although Organic Valley also has plenty of opportunities for people with a non-agricultural background).

We’ve written about quite a few software development jobs, and we feature non-profits every weekend, but rarely do the two overlap. There are a ton of tech based start-ups lately, but for some reason most non-profits tend to shy away from technology (maybe it’s the Bill Gates thing, make a ton of money in tech, then donate it to charities). The Wikimedia Foundation is a great example of a non-profit that is making the world a better place through technology. By facilitating the open exchange of information, they are expanding educational opportunities for people across the world.

The idea for today’s post came from a television commercial. So, the next time your Mom yells at you for being lazy and watching TV instead of looking for a job, tell her that being a couch potato is part of your job search repertoire. Seriously. We know that a ton of college students are watching TV with a laptop on their lap, and hopefully you’re one of them. If you’re in the right mindset, you’ll realize that no matter what you’re watching, you’ll be absolutely bombarded with new job ideas. Take these ideas, do a Google search, and find a job! Solar power is one of those things that continues to amaze you long after you’re first introduced to it. Even if it’s just a photovoltaic cell connected to a lightbulb, the harnessing of the sun’s power always seems to generate a feeling of child-like amazement. Lucky for our planet, that youthful exuberance has remained in many of today’s entrepreneurs, even after they have grown up. Because of them, it seems that we might soon see the day when solar power moves from something that hobbyists play around with to a real source of sustainable energy.

In case you missed it, we just published an article last night called Don’t Get Stuck in the Web: Cold Calling in the Internet Age. It’s a guide to finding jobs that aren’t listed online, so we thought we’d give you a chance to put your newly learned skills to the test by focusing today’s post on a company that doesn’t even have a Careers page.
Bear Naked makes granola. Many other companies have made granola, but Bear Naked found a way to do it better. So much better that in 5 years they were able to become the #2 granola brand in the US and sell their business to Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s. Did we mention that Bear Naked founder Kelly Flatley was 23 when she started the company? The, details of the deal were not fully disclosed, but the total value of the acquisition that included Bear Naked and Gardenburger was reported at $122 million. We’re not sure what it is that made Bear Naked so successful, but we do know that their products taste great, are good for you, and have excellent packaging. We think they must have some pretty smart people working for them too.
