BAE Systems

Posted on Tuesday, February 5, 2008

BAE Systems LogoBAE Systems is a global defence (they’re British) and aerospace company. They are quite huge, employing close to 100,000 people across the world, which means that they do an enormous amount of entry-level hiring. BAE Systems operates in a wide range of businesses - from land armaments to regional aircraft, from military air solutions to communications and electronic warfare systems. Their timeline of milestones will give you a better idea of the specifics of what they do. BAE Systems is probably not the best fit if you participated in a peace protest during college, but if you want to be in the industry that is pushing the bounds of engineering, it’s hard to overlook defense. NFL Teams

NFL LogoThe Super Bowl is over, which is heartbreaking for all you football fans. I’d make reference to the outcome of how either the Pats pulled off a perfect season or Eli Manning finally lived up to his last name and got himself a ring, but I wrote this post a few days in advance because I’m in Costa Rica fishing. I probably only watched half the game before going to bed so that I can wake up at 5 AM to get on a boat. I also only saw commercials in Spanish, which are not the same Super Bowl commercials that we’ve all come to love (by the way, don’t be influenced by the big job boards buying Super Bowl ad space, they’re still a really bad way to find authentic information for your job search). There’s no Internet down there anyways, so it’s not like I could have updated this post even if I watched the whole game. You should definitely feel sorry for me. Continue reading about NFL Teams…

Happy Super Bowl Sunday! Yes, this might be a first. A weekend where both Saturday and Sunday are major holidays. Don’t even try to dispute the validity of Groundhog Day and Super Bowl Sunday as major holidays. That means we have another holiday themed non-profit organization to talk about. We looked high and low, and couldn’t find too many football related non-profits, which surprised us. We especially wanted to find one that is actively hiring, and on that front we struck out - er - got sacked. Continue reading about USA Football…

Punxsutawney Groundhog Club

It’s your biggest fear. You’ll graduate college, get a job, and begin life as Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Every day will be the same. Different. But the same. Hell on Earth will begin at 22 years old. We don’t want that to happen to you. That’s why we write about a new and exciting company’s entry-level jobs every day. Today’s “job” isn’t much of a job, but you have to forgive us for celebrating one of our favorite holidays. So, if you’re not interested in becoming part of the inner circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, take a look at our Past Jobs or our Online Job Search Blog and start formulating a plan so you don’t end up trapped like Bill Murray. On the other hand, if you’re interested in wearing a stove pipe hat and handling rodents on cold February mornings, read on. Continue reading about Punxsutawney Groundhog Club…

Netflix

Netflix LogoWhether you hit the multiplex with your friends, had them over to watch a rental, or sat alone and watched in your room as you languished through your awkward stage (everyone has one), Friday nights in Middle School always seemed to revolve around movies. To get a rental, you’d have to beg your Mom to take you to Blockbuster. Then you’d have to lobby her on why you were mature enough to rent an R-rated movie, despite the fact that you just made it to legal age for a PG-13. Those days are long gone, and not just because you’re an adult now. Now, you either wait a couple days for the mailman to deliver your movie or you sit for 10 minutes while you download it. Netflix has ruined those cherished moments of arguing with your mother about movie rentals and late fees, but I think we can all agree to forgive them. Continue reading about Netflix…

Blackboard

Blackboard LogoFor those who don’t attend “Blackboard schools,” Blackboard is a company that develops software to facilitate e-learning. In other words, your professor can post a syllabus, grades, announcements, and readings on the Blackboard course site. When we first considered writing a post about Blackboard, we thought we’d try to appeal to the Blackboard lovers. We know they’re out there, but after a thorough search of Facebook, it seems that this demographic isn’t yet ready to publicly declare their love for Blackboard. We were expecting a group named Blackboard Addicts Anonymous for compulsive grade checkers, but instead found a host of other Blackboard related Facebook groups. Continue reading about Blackboard…

One Day, One Job is run on blogging software called Wordpress. Wordpress is amazingly powerful, easy to use, and free. We love it. Automattic is the company that makes Wordpress. They’re hiring, and we want to thank them for giving us an amazing product for free by telling our readers about the job openings that they have. You might expect these jobs to be suckier than usual, since we’re writing about them as a thank you. If that’s what you were thinking, you’re very, very wrong. In fact, we almost didn’t tell you about Automattic’s jobs and applied for them ourselves - they look that cool. Continue reading about Automattic…

Woot! Logo

When I was a kid in elementary school, our teacher asked us to have a book at our desk to read during short periods of downtime. If a lesson finished a little early and she couldn’t think of something to do with a class of fourth graders, we picked up our books and started reading. Most kids had fun story books to read, but for some reason (probably because it was already in my desk and I didn’t feel like finding another book) my book was a pocket dictionary. While other kids were reading about the adventures of some imaginary character, I was looking up words to craft my comebacks when I was inevitably made fun of. I wish the word w00t had existed back then, not because it would have been particularly useful in my fourth grade reading level verbal counterattacks, but because I think my classmates would have realized that reading a dictionary can’t be all bad if you can find words like w00t. Organic Valley

Organic Valley Logo

Organic food is back. First it was for hippies. Then it was for wealthy foodies. Now it’s hitting the mainstream with many every day supermarkets having an organic aisle. In just a few short centuries, we’ve come full circle from all organic farming (there were no other options), to chemically dependent factory farming, back to organic. Organics may be a little more expensive, but there is a growing population that is willing to pay a premium for food that they consider healthier, more humane, and better tasting. Organic Valley is a cooperative between 1201 farmer-owners that allows small organic farmers to combine their growing power and sell products on a scale that is usually reserved for industrialized farming operations. Yes, it’s true. One Day, One Job finally has a post for the aggies out there (although Organic Valley also has plenty of opportunities for people with a non-agricultural background). Wikimedia Foundation

Wikimedia Foundation LogoWe’ve written about quite a few software development jobs, and we feature non-profits every weekend, but rarely do the two overlap. There are a ton of tech based start-ups lately, but for some reason most non-profits tend to shy away from technology (maybe it’s the Bill Gates thing, make a ton of money in tech, then donate it to charities). The Wikimedia Foundation is a great example of a non-profit that is making the world a better place through technology. By facilitating the open exchange of information, they are expanding educational opportunities for people across the world. Continue reading about Wikimedia Foundation…

Association of Zoos and Aquariums Logo

The idea for today’s post came from a television commercial. So, the next time your Mom yells at you for being lazy and watching TV instead of looking for a job, tell her that being a couch potato is part of your job search repertoire. Seriously. We know that a ton of college students are watching TV with a laptop on their lap, and hopefully you’re one of them. If you’re in the right mindset, you’ll realize that no matter what you’re watching, you’ll be absolutely bombarded with new job ideas. Take these ideas, do a Google search, and find a job! You know what? We might just write an article about using the tube to find a job. (Update: We did, here’s The Couch Potato’s Guide to Job Search.) Nanosolar Logo

Solar power is one of those things that continues to amaze you long after you’re first introduced to it. Even if it’s just a photovoltaic cell connected to a lightbulb, the harnessing of the sun’s power always seems to generate a feeling of child-like amazement. Lucky for our planet, that youthful exuberance has remained in many of today’s entrepreneurs, even after they have grown up. Because of them, it seems that we might soon see the day when solar power moves from something that hobbyists play around with to a real source of sustainable energy. Freedom-2

Freedom-2 LogoCollege is when you make decisions that affect the rest of your life. You pick a major, you choose to study (or party) hard, and you might even decide to ask out your future spouse. Then, one night, things get a little out of hand. You wake up on the living room floor of your apartment, you walk to the bathroom, look into the mirror, and see that you’ve managed to get a bit of ink on yourself. No, your friends didn’t shame you with sharpies. You got a tattoo. It’s not going to wash off, no matter how hard you scrub. Sorry, mom. Continue reading about Freedom-2…

Squidoo

Squidoo LogoWe were just about to hit publish on our post for today, when we got distracted and checked our RSS feeds - if you don’t know what an RSS feed is, read our article on RSS and job search - and we saw that there was a new post at Seth Godin’s blog. He writes great stuff, so we’re always excited to read what is on his mind. When we saw that the post was a job opportunity, our ears perked up. Then we clicked through to the job description, and our hearts jumped like the time in the dining hall when our stir fry was cooked on the same grill as our favorite hockey player. Seth’s company, Squidoo, is hiring a software developer, and the job description is phenomenal! Continue reading about Squidoo…

Bear Naked

Posted on Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Bear Naked LogoIn case you missed it, we just published an article last night called Don’t Get Stuck in the Web: Cold Calling in the Internet Age. It’s a guide to finding jobs that aren’t listed online, so we thought we’d give you a chance to put your newly learned skills to the test by focusing today’s post on a company that doesn’t even have a Careers page.

Bear Naked makes granola. Many other companies have made granola, but Bear Naked found a way to do it better. So much better that in 5 years they were able to become the #2 granola brand in the US and sell their business to Kashi, which is owned by Kellogg’s. Did we mention that Bear Naked founder Kelly Flatley was 23 when she started the company? The, details of the deal were not fully disclosed, but the total value of the acquisition that included Bear Naked and Gardenburger was reported at $122 million. We’re not sure what it is that made Bear Naked so successful, but we do know that their products taste great, are good for you, and have excellent packaging. We think they must have some pretty smart people working for them too. Continue reading about Bear Naked…

Thrillist Logo

The word in the chat rooms (psyche, chat rooms are so 90’s) is that the latest trend in trend watching is the daily e-mail list. For the ladies there’s Daily Candy. For the dudes there’s Thrillist. And for the college seniors there’s One Day, One Job (yes, we have an e-mail list, and clicking that link will allow you to subscribe). It doesn’t get any easier than having other people do the hard work of trend hunting, while you sit back and read about their newest finds in your e-mail. Why pay attention when you can have people on the Internet tell you what’s hot and what’s not? Continue reading about Thrillist…

The New Teacher Project

The New Teacher Project LogoThis post was written by Alyssa Godesky as one of her entries in our Find a Job, Win a Wii contest, which she ended up winning. We don’t have any contests going on right now, but if you’d like to write a post for us and get your name in the spotlight, e-mail us at info@onedayonejob.com

Are you interested in a job in education, but teaching in a classroom just isn’t for you? Entry-level jobs in education that are done outside of the classroom are tough to find, but they’re out there. The New Teacher Project is a fine example. The New Teacher Project is a non-profit organization that recruits and trains teachers to put them in classrooms where they are badly needed. Continue reading about The New Teacher Project…

Elgato Systems

Posted on Friday, January 18, 2008

Elgato Systems LogoToday’s post is probably a shot in the dark, but we love the company’s products, and it’s still MacWorld Expo week, so we’re going to write about them anyways. What Elgato Systems does is simple - they make products that allow you to watch television on your Mac. Their hardware devices are plug and play and their software is absolutely killer. It’s also a DVR, so you can record your shows, export them to your iPod and watch them wherever you want. You can even record Jeopardy!, export it, send it to a friend, and play over the phone - not that we’ve ever done that. Continue reading about Elgato Systems…

Associated Press

Associated Press LogoOn Tuesday we talked about becoming a blogger and sneaking into the journalism profession through the back door, but today we’re going to talk about the “legit route.” The Associated Press is world’s largest and oldest news-gathering organization, and for that reason it’s probably one of the most respected names in journalism. Apple

Posted on Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Apple LogoYesterday, we spent a good part of the day camped in front of our computers reading MacRumors.com’s live blog updates from the Apple Keynote at MacWorld Expo San Francisco. In case you aren’t a “macfanboy,” you should know that they announced the MacBook Air, updates to the iPhone and iPod Touch software, improved AppleTV functionality with downloadable movie rentals, and a wireless router/storage/backup device called Time Capsule. For some who were expecting more, yesterday’s products announcements were quite a disappointment, while for others, it was like Christmas morning all over again. Anyways, today’s event was a great display of how even huge companies can remain innovative, and that got us thinking about how a new college grad can snag a job at Apple. MLB Trade Rumors

MLB Trade Rumors LogoTypically, our daily posts focus on the best entry-level jobs for new college graduates. Occasionally we’ll talk about part-time gigs or freelance opportunities if they look especially interesting (and we’re saving internships for our next project… shhh), but we usually like to stay focused on full time jobs for new grads. Well, today we’re going to feature a “job” that is not paid, nor is it full time, but it is a great opportunity that could definitely help you pursue a passion for sports journalism. The Weather Channel LogoHere at the One Day, One Job headquarters, we’re hunkering down in preparation for a Nor’easter that is about to drop snow on us like Paula Dean drops another stick of butter into one of her recipes. Of course there are no snow days in the blogosphere, so we figured we’d go with what Mother Nature gives us and discuss entry-level job opportunities at The Weather Channel. National Trust for Historic Preservation

National Trust for Historic Preservation Logo

On many college campuses there’s a constant battle between the old and the new. We’re not talking about Senior-Freshmen rivalries - that’s so high school. We’re talking about the state of constant construction that is as much a part of going to college as wearing flip flops in the shower. Administrators and trustees are left to decide whether it is better to make do with the quirky inadequacies of a building from a century ago, or to knock it down and build a new monstrosity in the latest architectural fashion. There is a fine balance that needs to be achieved between architectural and historic integrity and function. Unfortunately, it seems more and more common that campus decision-makers are deciding in favor of state of the art facilities built atop the graves of their obsolete predecessors (I guess you know what One Day, One Job’s stand on this issue is). Sylvan Beach Foundation

Posted on Saturday, January 12, 2008

Sylvan Beach Foundation LogoWhen we came across today’s non-profit organization, we were surprised at what we found. We saw the name Sylvan Beach Foundation and expected an organization focused on environmental conservation - something like saving sea turtles or preventing land erosion. Instead, we found an organization that is changing the lives of marginalized young men through social enterprises. We’re not sure where the name Sylvan Beach Foundation came from, but we can’t see how it relates to the small town in upstate New York called Sylvan Beach which was founded by a pirate named Captain Steamer (that name is funny, right?). Mercury Mambo

Mercury Mambo LogoWe’ve talked about quite a few companies with advertising jobs since we launched, but Mercury Mambo is the first with a truly unique niche. They specialize in targeted Hispanic marketing strategies. It’s pretty obvious why that’s a smart business to be in, and it’s been paying off for Mercury Mambo - they were featured in the Inc. 500 for 2007 with 806.5% 3-year revenue growth. Ask Sunday

Posted on Thursday, January 10, 2008

Ask Sunday LogoLife is filled with things you don’t want to do. As a college student, you probably have a lot of free time but still avoid mundane tasks (like laundry) until the last possible minute. At some point in your life those daily tasks pile up enough to keep you from being able to do what you want to do with your life. Some things like brushing your teeth and showering are absolutely unavoidable, but others you can pay someone to do. You can hire a cleaning lady, send your laundry out, and buy prepared foods, but that can become expensive. There are other daily tasks that you need done, but that can be done from anywhere. Ask Sunday is a service that allows you to send those tasks overseas for a really cheap price ($29 for 30 monthly 20-minutes tasks). So for less than you probably spend on booze in a weekend, you can have your own virtual assistant. Continue reading about Ask Sunday…

Let’s say instead of giving away a Wii over the holiday season, we chose to scalp it on Craigslist. Three interested parties e-mail us with offers to meet up for the exchange. We don’t want to get scammed, and we also want to avoid wasting our time going to meet someone who doesn’t show. How would we find out if the people who e-mailed us are trustworthy? We could try Googling their e-mail address and see what comes up, or we could use RapLeaf to check their reputations. Continue reading about RapLeaf…

BasePoint Analytics

BasePoint Analytics LogoDid you want to be a detective growing up? Were you inspired by Inspector Gadget (ok, he was a buffoon, but his niece Penny was a hell of a sleuth)? Did you play with Spy Tech toys? Do you watch CSI Miami and think that you should have followed your childhood dreams? There’s something really cool about solving mysteries. What’s even cooler is solving them before they happen. The police usually can’t do that, because of those pesky civil liberties; however, BasePoint Analytics, located in Carlsbad, CA, is a company that prevents fraud before it happens. Through the scientific method they have developed a number of products and services that allows banks and mortgage lenders to identify fraud before they get burned by falsified applications. BasePoint’s tools enable financial institutions to accept well-qualified applicants more quickly, while giving further scrutiny to applications that are flagged by BasePoint Analytics’ models. jetBlue Airways

JetBlue Airways Logo

Well, we made it back home from vacation, but not without 3 hours of sitting on the runway due to Curacao’s random decision to close their airspace. Our pilot told us that we had to file a flight plan through Venezuelan airspace instead, and Venezuela’s being run by an unfriendly dictator didn’t make that the easiest - or fastest - process. By the time our new flight plan was filed, Curacao had lifted the flight ban and we finally went on our merry way. As painful as it was to be on the runway for 3 hours, jetBlue made it pretty bearable. They gave us drinks and snacks, although they did plead with us to take it easy, as they were running out and did not have catering services at this airport. Of course the request to back off the goodies created a run on the galley, but the flight attendants were still able to do a full snack and beverage service in-flight despite the excessive pre-flight demand. It was also nice to have the most legroom in coach and a little tv in the seatbacks in front of us. Another One Day, One Jobber flew a different airline out of the same airport at the same time and had a much more miserable experience - no food, no movies, and too much air conditioning with no blankets. jetBlue has been ranked by Conde Nast Traveler as America’s Best Domestic Airline for 6 straight years now, and their unparalleled devotion to customer service is the reason.
