I’m sure that you’ve heard a lot in the news about how traditional media companies are having trouble taking their business models online. You may be under the impression that making money from web content is near impossible, but there’s a dirty little secret: it’s not. While companies like the New York Times stick to editorial integrity and chasing Pulitzers, there are companies out there that craft their content with the sole purpose of making money. A perfect example is Santa Monica, CA based Demand Media. They’ve secured more than $355 million in venture capital funding, grown annual revenue to more than $200 million annually, and reached a valuation north of $1 billion all by taking an ROI based approach to content development. How does that work? Demand Media has developed an algorithm that helps them find profitable topics. By using data from Google AdWords, they’re able to estimate the demand for a given piece of content (example: an article and video on how to tie your shoes) along with the revenue that the yet to be developed piece of content could be expected to make given a certain number of pageviews.

Demand a Job

This may sound unsavory to some of the writers out there, but I’d imagine the business students are in awe. Demand Media delivers their content through a number of web properties, and some of these include eHow, Cracked, and Livestrong.com. In addition to distributing profitable content across their web properties, Demand Media also licenses some of the social media tools that they’ve developed internally to other businesses. One of the amazing things that I learned about Demand Media while researching them is that they publish approximately 4,000 articles and videos every day. Demand Media is YouTube’s largest contributor, and the number of pageviews that they’re driving across their network is staggering. They’re able to develop so much content through an army of freelancers who work through a site called Demand Studios. If you’re a Writer, Filmmaker, or Copy Editor, that’s the first option for getting a “job” (it’s only freelance, and the rates are kind of low) through Demand Media. Your second option is to check out Demand Media’s Corporate Job offerings. They have a number of positions that seem suitable for new grads including HR Coordinator (Bellevue, WA), QA Engineer (Austin, TX), Marketing Associate (Bellevue, WA), QA Engineer (Santa Monica, CA), Algorithm Scientist (Austin, TX – PhDs only), Account Manager (Bellevue, WA), and Web Developer/Graphic Designer (Austin, TX). You can apply online for any of these positions, but before you do, take an hour to learn more about Demand Media—there’s a ton of information available about them.

Interested in wine and travel? Then Wagstaff Worldwide might be the public relations agency for you! Located in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York City, Wagstaff specializes in media relations but does offer other services such as creating customized public relations plans, setting up and executing social media strategies, event planning, tourism marketing, and editorial and copywriting expertise. Their clients include restaurants, hotels, international travel organizations, design agencies, wine and spirits, lounges and spas—and their client list is huge!

Cultivate Your Career with Top Tastemakers

Now, I realize that Wagstaff is “worldwide,” but their team isn’t really that large, and they have quite a few junior-level staff members. The company is currently seeking an Account Coordinator for its Los Angeles office. Candidates are expected to possess “excellent writing, presentation and sales skills, relevant experience in the hospitality, journalism and/or public relations industries and an outgoing personality.” Interested? Submit your cover letter, résumé and salary history to president Mary Wagstaff at mary@wagstaffworldwide.com. You might also consider following the LA office on Twitter. If you’re interested in working at one of the other offices, you should keep your eyes peeled for new job postings or use Wagstaff Worldwide’s Contact page to find the right people to reach out to.

Want a crappy job? You’re in luck. Today I came across WhatACrappyJob.com, which is actually the internship site for Bozell, a Omaha, NE based full-service public relations and advertising agency. There’s nothing extraordinarily special about the site beyond the domain name, but it’s well designed and informative, which is rare when it comes to Careers websites. I guess that’s what you should expect from the agency behind the “Got Milk?” mustache campaign and the “Pork. The Other White Meat.” slogan. Bozell’s history includes quite a few mergers, acquisitions, and buybacks. As of 2001 Bozell has moved away from Wall Street and returned to it roots as “an independent, client-focused, employee-owned agency.” They have an impressive portfolio of work and seem like a pretty cool place to work.

Got Bozell?

Going back to WhatACrappyJob.com, I have to admit that Bozell doesn’t have any entry level opportunities posted right now. However, I am inclined to think that a company that gives as much attention to their internship program as Bozell does must also do a significant amount of entry level hiring. Their internships are offered in Account Services, Art Direction/Design, Copywriting, Interactive, Media, Social Media, and Public Relations, so it would make sense that any entry level hiring that they do would be in those areas. It does seem that Bozell is open to accepting unsolicited résumés, as they post the e-mail address for their Managing Principal, Administration & Business Services on their Careers page. Her name is Robin Donovan, and you can reach out to her at rdonovan@bozell.com. You may also want to do a little LinkedIn research to get a better feel for the types of positions that Bozell ofers.

It’s hard to imagine that a film production company could morph into “a holistic interactive agency built for a digital world;” however, that’s exactly what New York City’s R/GA has done. Now, film production and advertising aren’t all that different, but it’s still a big psychological leap from one to the other. Moreover, not many companies are willing to take a huge risk and move where innovation takes them. R/GA embraces change. They’re also really freakin’ good at what they do. Their clients include Nike, Verizon, IBM, Target, Bank of America, and a bunch of other extremely well known companies. They also have the best corporate website built in Flash that I’ve ever seen. Everything about it works—I can actually give you links to specific pages. Beyond that, the site does a fantastic job of presenting R/GA’s brand. It’s packed with information and has fantastic videos (they obviously haven’t abandoned film production completely).

Enroll at R/GA University

Everything that I’ve come across related to R/GA has impressed me. Their website. Their client list. Their portfolio. And even their Jobs page (powered by Jobvite—ok, I can’t link directly to the jobs, but the site is still very easy to use). Oh yeah, and don’t forget R/GA University. It’s R/GA’s take on continuing education for employees, and it includes six pillars: Professional Development, Industry Trends, Leadership Development, Inside R/GA, R/GA and You, and Work + Life Balance. They “believe that the broad base of courses piques curiosity and encourages people to try new things. And ultimately makes people more well rounded and better at their jobs.” You have to like the sound of that. Anyway, R/GA has more than 25 job openings, and a number of them seem suitable for new college grads. Entry level positions include: Junior Designer (London, UK), Associate Desktop Support Administrator (New York, NY), Junior Copywriter (New York, NY), Junior Open Standards Developer (New York, NY). They also have a San Francisco office, but no entry level positions posted there. You can apply for any of these jobs online, or you can post a résumé for an unlisted position to any of their departments.

We’ve featured quite a few integrated integrated marketing agencies in the past, but I’m not sure that we’ve ever actually talked about what integrated marketing is. According to Wikipedia (original reference has a dead link), integrated marketing communications is “a planning process designed to assure that all brand contacts received by a customer or prospect for a product, service, or organization are relevant to that person and consistent over time.” That sounds desirable, but how do you accomplish that? You either do it all yourself, or you hire an agency that does it all. It’s really hard to to accomplish integrated marketing when you have one agency doing PR, another doing TV ads, and another doing interactive. Greenville, SC based Erwin-Penland is an agency that does it all—interactive, public relations, direct mail, event planning, advertising, strategic planning, and media—and they don’t farm any of it out to freelancers or other agencies.

Take a Trip to Erwin-Penland

The cool thing is that Erwin-Penland takes an integrated approach to branding themselves and their jobs. They have a gorgeous website, and they make it very easy to understand what they’re all about. Unfortunately, I can’t embed the video from Erwin-Penland’s About page because that’s the perfect way to show you what they’re all about, so I’m going to encourage you to go watch it now. It makes the company look like a really fun place to work. So does the fact that Erwin-Penland divides their workforce into client teams, not departments. That should make for a very different work experience than most other agencies offer.

If that sounds like something that you’d enjoy, then you need to check out Jobs at Erwin-Penland. Right now there are quite a few opportunities posted, and there’s also a Twitter account for EPJobs (in fact they just announced 7 new hires this week—what recession?). The job openings that seem most suitable for new grads are Junior Account Executive and Junior Copywriter; however, you may also want to check out Traffic Manager, Graphic Designer, Planner, Billing Coordinator, and Technical Support Analyst. Additionally, Erwin-Penland encourages new grads to apply for their paid internships. There’s a résumé submission form on each job description page, so find the right job for you and apply today.

Sometimes I don’t completely get advertising. Take McDonald’s for example. How many people in the US have never heard of McDonald’s? Not many. So what’s the point in advertising? Maybe you can convince some more people to come in to buy off of the Dollar Menu or get more kids to beg their parents to buy them a happy meal, but it seems like McDonald’s would be just fine without any advertising at all. That’s something that the folks at Dallas’ Moroch will disagree with strongly because they are an ad agency that happens to do a lot of work with McDonald’s. And since Moroch’s About page says that they’re really all about helping their clients make more money (usually through advertising), I’m going to take a wager that all of the Mickey D’s advertising that you see has a significant effect on the bottom line. Beyond McDonald’s, Moroch also works with huge brands like Verizon, Walt Disney Pictures, Monster (yuck), and Make-A-Wish. That may sound cushy, but that means that there’s always a constant pressure to deliver spectacular results.

Your (Personal) Brand Wins

If you’re looking to learn a lot about the Advertising industry, Moroch looks like a fantastic place to do that. I wish that I could intersperse links throughout this post, but Moroch uses Flash for their website. That means that we can’t link directly to the pages, so you’ll have to do some browsing to read case studies, check out their client list, read their story, and see where they have offices. The good news is that we can link to their Jobs page (even if it is a kind of crappy Applicant Tracking System). There you’ll see some interesting opportunities that are suitable for new college grads. There’s a McDonald’s Account Coordinator in Sacramento, CA along with opportunities to submit a creative portfolio (Copywriters, Art Directors, Creative Directors and the like) or to submit a general résumé (Advertising, Marketing, and Public Relations) to the Dallas, TX office. Moroch looks like a pretty cool place to work, so give it a shot.

Considering that I do this nearly every day, I see a lot of companies and a lot of jobs, but today I came across something that I’ve never seen before. It’s called Agency Nil, and it’s an full-service advertising agency, except it’s nothing like any ad agency that you’ve ever seen. They don’t have a physical location, they don’t have a salaried staff, and they don’t have set fees. It’s almost as they don’t exist (I think that’s where the “nil” comes in), but they do. As PSFK puts it, Agency Nil “hopes to channelize the skills of experienced but laid-off talents from the advertising industry, as well as that of graduate students from advertising programs – people who just can’t seem to lay their hands on that elusive job.” In other words, they’re trying to put the glut of available talent to good use. It’s brilliant.

Will Work for All It’s Worth

The whole idea behind Agency Nil is that clients pay what they think the work they get is worth. They do have to cover any expenses, but beyond that the billing is completely discretionary. It allows them to put all of the risk on the agency, and that means the client is likely to get a lot more creativity than they would ever get in house. Ageny Nil’s slogan is “cheaper than freelance, better than interns,” and I think it’s pretty obvious why. Agency Nil was started by Hank Leber, a recent grad of the graduate program at VCU Brancenter, and he’s looking for more talent to join him at Agency Nil. If you’re interested in working in a pure meritocracy with a lot of uncertainty, send something impressive to audition@agencynil.com.

I’ve done it. I’ve found the most ridiculous looking corporate website on the web. It has an animated moving background and multiple bouncing balloon/blimp logos that make it look like it’s straight out of the Imagination Land episode of South Park. It may be a little hokey, but it works for Niles, IL (right outside of Chicago) based The Bradford Group because they’re in the collectibles industry. Their customers aren’t concerned with flash and edginess, they’re all about sentimentality. When you’ve been doing direct marketing of collector plates, music boxes, and all kinds of commemorative items for 36 years, you probably know your audience. So, even though The Bradford Group’s web design leaves me laughing out loud, I’m not going to sell them short based on my taste as a non-collector. (And if you totally disagree with me and love the design, you can make it your computer’s background.)

Take a Balloon Ride

The Bradford Group has a wide variety of brands that fill different niches in the collectibles market. They have The Bradford Exchange, which is all about “limited-edition collector plates”, and there’s also Hawthorne Village, which focuses on “finely crafted collectible villages, electric trains, figurines and accessories.” There are also 9 more brands that market items like sports collectibles, ornaments, and diecast cars and trucks. It’s a business that I know nearly nothing about, but it sounds like it has a lot in common with MBI Inc., whose jobs we featured here a few months ago. Beyond having similar businesses, they also both seem to have a huge interest in entry level talent and recruiting in general. The Bradford Group’s website is plastered with links promoting their jobs, including a special section for College Recruiting. They seem to do a good amount of on-campus recruiting for positions like Direct Marketing Associate and Product Development Associate, and you can take a look at what kind of positions they currently have available here. They also have a call for freelance artists posted on their site. The current job postings seem to be more focused on interns than entry level, but there’s no reason that you shouldn’t try reaching out to them and finding out more about career options at The Bradford Group. Also, don’t forget to take an online tour of The Bradford Group’s headquarters, it looks pretty neat.

I know that despite the fact that I keep ripping on the traditional media – the old guard – I keep featuring their jobs here. I’m not being a hypocrite. I promise. I know that taking entry level jobs with companies that might not be around in 5 years isn’t the best decision, but if anyone can save the old media, it’s you. The new media has been created by the masses and has originated from young people with new ideas, which is just what these media behemoths need to survive. Of course these companies probably don’t realize how much they need you yet, but they do. Well, if you’re going to get a job in old media – like the magazine industry – you might as well go with the best. Condé Nast has a list of brands that is rivaled by few and includes Vogue, W, style.com, Glamour, Allure, Self, Teen Vogue, GQ, Details, men.style.com, Architectural Digest, Brides, Modern, Bride, Elegant Bride, Brides.com, Lucky, Domino, Cookie, Golf Digest, Golf World, Vanity Fair, Gourmet, Bon Appétit, epicurious.com, Condé Nast Traveler, concierge.com, Wired, Wired.com, Condé Nast Portfolio, Portfolio.com, WWD, FN, and The New Yorker. There’s still a lot of uncertainty in the industry, but those are still great names to be associated with.

Keep Reading for Condé Nast Jobs

There’s not a lot more that I can say about Condé Nast. They’re one of the most respected names in the media, but they’re facing struggles just like everybody else in the industry. With that said, they’re still doing some hiring. Their Careers site provides a lot of information on what it’s like to work for them, and their Job Listings show 18 openings. Of those opening a few appear to be suitable for new college grads, although it’s hard to know for sure because Condé Nast’s job postings are so paltry. We can’t link to their job postings because of the Applicant Tracking System that they use, but you should look out for job titles that include Sales Assistant (New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Detroit), Promotion Copywriter (New York), Promotion Coordinator (New York), Online Marketing Data Entry Temp (New York), and Executive Assistant (New York). You can apply for all of these jobs online from the job postings that you find using their search function.

While I find most of the entry level jobs and companies that I feature here to be interesting, occasionally I come across one that almost makes me want to quit what I’m doing and go work for someone else. There are just some companies and jobs that stand out from the rest. SEOmoz is one of them. They’re a Seattle based search engine optimization company, but they’re more than that. Instead of just taking on consulting work like most SEO companies, they’ve made their name by becoming the place to go for search engine optimization education and tools. I’ve been an on and off member of SEOmoz’s Pro service, and I love it. I’ve learned most of my SEO knowledge from SEOmoz, and SEO has been one of the driving forces behind the growth of One Day, One Job and One Day, One Internship. I’ve even adopted SEOmoz’s business model of offering premium educational content (in the form of a job search training course).

Putting the Search in Job Search

If you don’t know much about SEO, SEOmoz is the place to learn. Their Beginner’s Guide to Search Engine Optimization is a great place to start. SEO is a growing field that isn’t being hit nearly as hard by the economic downturn. That’s because SEO is a relatively cheap way (compared to most other forms of marketing) to get people to your website. In fact, there are quite a few people who are making millions of dollars a year just based on their knowledge of SEO. If you don’t know anything about SEO, a job at SEOmoz probably isn’t in the cards for you right now, but I still recommend that you spend a couple of hours checking them out. Knowing a thing or two about how the search engines work can be really useful in nearly any job – or for personal branding during your job search.

If you do have some SEO expertise, then this job at SEOmoz is probably a dream come true. You can find the full description on their SEO Expert Wanted post. The requirements are pretty steep, but there should be quite a few of you who can fit the bill. The vibe that I get from SEOmoz is that they’re an awesome place to work and that they have a lot of fun. I also get a sense that their people develop very rapidly – mostly because working at SEOmoz is full of educational opportunities. I have nothing but good things to say about my experiences with SEOmoz, so check out the full job description and make sure that you read the application instructions carefully. Also, this is the kind of job where there’s a lot of room to make yourself stand out in the application process, so do it!

If you’ve already read our article about using Facebook advertising in your job search, you might know the name Alex Payne. He was one of the participants in our experiment who responded to our call for “adventurous job seekers.” He’s a new grad from Duke with a double major in English and Literature, and he was looking for a job in marketing and publishing. We’re not sure if our experiment helped to ignite his interest in social media, but he’s taken an internship at Ignite Social Media to try his hand at online marketing. Alex recently pinged me to let me know that Ignite is hiring for a couple positions that might be well suited to new college grads. It’s good to know people on the inside.

Ignite Your Career

Social media is becoming a big business, and we’re seeing more and more jobs in social media every day. Ignite Social Media is based out of Cary, NC and they certainly have a good eye for budding social media talent (they hired Alex, a kid who was brave enough to use Facebook ads in his job search). Right now they have three job openings that they announced in more detail on their blog. They’re looking for a Web Copywriter, an Interactive Designer, and an Account Manager. All of these positions require a certain level of expertise, but they can certainly be classified as entry level.

If you’re fired up about working at Ignite, you can send a cover letter and a link to your LinkedIn profile (they really are all about social media) to erin@ignitesocialmedia.com. The cover letter is important, so be sure to write it specifically for the job that you’re applying for at Ignite. If you’re applying for the Web Copywriter job, you should include links to 2+ writing samples, and if you’re applying for the Interactive Designer job, you should include links to 2+ design samples. They’ll mark your application as spam (not really, I made that up, but they won’t read it) if you don’t include the cover letter and required samples.

If you have any questions about working at Ignite, we’re sure that Alex and other Ignite employees will be happy to answer them in the comments section. We expect nothing less of a company that specializes in social media.

We’ve talked about quite a few companies with advertising jobs since we launched, but Mercury Mambo is the first with a truly unique niche. They specialize in targeted Hispanic marketing strategies. It’s pretty obvious why that’s a smart business to be in, and it’s been paying off for Mercury Mambo – they were featured in the Inc. 500 for 2007 with 806.5% 3-year revenue growth.

That revenue growth is likely the result of Mercury Mambo’s working with big name clients like Anheuser Busch, Cadbury Schweppes, and US Cellular. With those clients, they’ve done some pretty cool projects directed towards a hispanic demographic. We especially liked the Bud Light Texas Guitar Hero On-Premise Promotion. Mercury Mambo developed and designed game units that included a custom painted guitar for Guitar Hero for special promotional events (most likely in bars). To see a picture and get the whole story, visit their portfolio and click on the Retailment section. If you want to find out more about what Mercury Mambo does, check out the Mambo Blog, which was surprisingly hard to find – it’s basically hidden on their site and is not even indexed by Google. There’s also a Mercury Mambo photo gallery that we also had to do some digging to find. You’d think a marketing consultancy would do a better job of making their online content available and easy to find…

From what we could find on their Join Our Team page and through our Google searches, Mercury Mambo doesn’t offer traditional entry-level job opportunities. Instead, they hire freelance graphic designers and copywriters to form project teams. These freelancers are hired by the project and paid accordingly. Mercury Mambo also says that their freelancers will occasionally have the opportunity to “participate in online surveys, conduct store checks, proof work, and provide valuable feedback on our work as well as our clients’.”

Typically, work by freelancers who are hired by Mercury Mambo is done under a pseudonym. They say this is to preserve privacy, but we don’t really get it. We’d love an explanation – if anyone from Mercury Mambo is reading this, please reply in the comments. We would also love to know if there are job opportunities in the Mercury Mambo office, since there’s no mention on their website. Maybe they hire freelancers who do great work for permanent positions? That would make a lot of sense. We did find an old job posting in which they were looking for an intern, and they reported having 16 employees for the Inc. 500, so you would think they might have some jobs available in their office. Maybe an e-mail to the right person could answer any questions you have about full-time jobs at Mercury Mambo.

To apply for freelance positions, you should send a resume and portfolio to superstar2@mercurymambo.com. Their site says to “complete this online application,” but there’s no link, so a resume and portfolio should be enough. We wonder were superstar@mercurymambo.com goes? Maybe that’s how you apply for permanent positions. (We’re joking. Don’t send e-mails to that address. Either nobody will get them, or whoever does will be pissed off at you and us.)

Note: On April 23rd we revisited entry-level jobs at Mercury Mambo.
