My favorite vacations when I was growing up were our annual trips to Nantucket. While it’s an awesome island and I had a lot of fiends there, there was something else that made the vacations special. We rented a house. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal, but it makes a vacation more relaxing. You may not have someone who makes your bed every morning, but there’s something really nice about having a place that feels like home while you’re on vacation. Back then we found our rental through an agent, but today it’s much easier to just go online and use a site like Tripping. They are a San Francisco, CA based company that has build “the world’s largest search engine for vacation and short-term rentals.” They tap into other sites’ inventories and let you compare properties easily.
Tripping’s listings include more than 1.5 million properties across 50,000 cities. Oddly enough, they say that they tap into HomeAway, but a search for a rental in my favorite fishing town turned up nothing on Tripping and a few results on HomeAway. I’m not sure what that’s about, but more populated cities seem to have much better inventory on Tripping. Previously Tripping was a social travel site, but they couldn’t find a revenue model that worked. As a result they switched to travel metasearch, but I’m still not clear on how they drive revenue. My guess would be advertising or referral fees from the sites whose listings they display. Either way, Tripping is an interesting take on travel search, and it’s worth checking out their Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for a Back-end Engineer, a Front-end Engineer, a Data Engineer, and interns in Software Engineering, Marketing, and Sales.
