Ever think about teaching? Here's an intro on what it takes to land an entry level teaching job.

Things to Get You Through the Job Search

Job searching sucks. Hopefully One Day, One Job has helped to make it a little bit better for you.

Here are some products that we’ve come across (often because we’ve featured the company that makes the product) that we think will make your job search more enjoyable. The links below are affiliate links (we get compensated if you make a purchase), but they’re only products that we know well or use. No crap. Promise.

When we find cool stuff that is relevant (even marginally) to your job search, we’ll add it to this page.

Courses

Found Your Career LogoWe made a course for job seekers. It’s called Found Your Career. It’s 21 days worth of material split into 41 lessons. It’s awesome, and now it’s only 27 bucks. Your text books cost way more than that, and they won’t get you a job that will pay you money (it’ll take like 93 minutes in your new job for this course to pay for itself).

Think we’ll recommend any other courses? Not for general career stuff. This course covers everything. We’re really proud of it.

Clothing/Interview Attire

What you wear can be really important in the job search. Most people get hung up on dressing to impress employers, but for me it’s all about confidence. If you know you look good, you’re going to perform better in your interviews and interactions.

Gilt Groupe

We featured Gilt Groupe in March of 2008—way before they got big. Since then, hundreds of our readers have signed up to get great deals on high end clothes. I don’t buy clothes full price anymore, and you shouldn’t either. Whether you’re looking for a business suit, nice shoes, or something to wear on your days off (because you’re going to get a job soon, remember?), Gilt has what you’re looking for, and they have it way cheaper than anywhere else. You need an invite to get in, so here’s your Gilt Groupe Invite.

Bonobos

Bonobos Pants

Guys. These pants are awesome. I’ve replaced all of the pants in my wardrobe with Bonobos (click that link to see their jobs). What’s even better is that they’ll give you a free $50 credit for your first order. All you have to do is e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com, and I’ll send you a referral code. Whether you’re looking for business casual or something a little fancier, they’ll hook you up. They also have an unbeatable return policy (and free shipping) – any pants, any time, any reason.

Books

Reading makes you smarter. Being smart helps you get a job. If you don’t have a job, you have the time, so READ! Here are some books that will change how you do things.

I Will Teach You To Be Rich

One of the most productive things that I did during my job search was start to get my personal finances in order. Unfortunately, I had to start from scratch and figure out things for myself. Luckily, you won’t have to do that. Ramit Sethi is a Stanford grad who wrote a brilliant book called I Will Teach You To Be Rich. If you read it, it will pay for itself many times over. It may not be directly related to the job search, but it will definitely help. Just imagine using an example of how you negotiated with your bank to drop an overdraft fee in an interview. It will impress.

How to Self-Destruct: Making the Least of What’s Left of Your Career

How to Self-Destruct CoverI don’t typically enjoy reading career advice books. It’s partly because most of them suck, but it’s also because I suffer from career advice overload. I really didn’t want to read Jason Seiden’s book after I met him, but I did, and I loved it. Why? It’s hilarious. It’s a book that will make you laugh at yourself and say, “Oh crap, I actually did that. No wonder I didn’t land that job.” After I read How to Self-Destruct, I knew I had to find a way to work with Jason. A few month later, he and I partnered to develop Found Your Career.

Rework

ReworkJason Fried runs 37signals, one of America’s most successful and unique startups. Rework is about how he runs that busines, and how he and his employees take a different approach to work. It’s extremely refreshing, and it will help you better understand how you can demonstrate your value for an employer. There’s a lot of controversy over Jason’s philosophies, but there is no doubt that they’ve worked for him and his employees.
