<p>I will never understand why Presidents&#8217; Day is such a big retail holiday. I tried doing some research, and all I could find was that the Federal holiday is still known as Washington&#8217;s Birthday, but it&#8217;s commonly known as Presidents&#8217; Day because so many retailers use the name. There&#8217;s no explanation for why the sales started happening in mid-February, and it&#8217;s even more puzzling that the sales are focused on durable goods like cars and mattresses. But that&#8217;s the way it is, and since we&#8217;re talking about mattresses, I think we should take a look at <strong>Sleepy&#8217;s</strong>. They are based in <strong>Hicksville, NY</strong> with 700+ showrooms across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia. It all adds up to make them the &#8220;largest mattress retailer in the world.&#8221; Sleepy&#8217;s <a href="http://www.sleepys.com/en/info/SleepyMedia/">tv advertisements</a> are ubiquitous, so it&#8217;s nearly impossible for me to think about mattresses with out thinking Sleepy&#8217;s (and hearing their jingle in my head).</p>
<h3>Don&#8217;t Sleep on Sleepy&#8217;s</h3>
<p>An average day for Sleepy&#8217;s means delivering more than 3,000 mattresses. Add that up over a year, and you get over a million mattresses. I wonder how many of them are sold during Presidents&#8217; Day week. Sleepy&#8217;s doesn&#8217;t stray too far from the mattress business. They do sell some bedding and furniture, but those selections seem to be pretty limited. Sleepy&#8217;s appears to sell all of the major brands of mattresses, and they&#8217;re willing to stand behind the products they sell (even if they don&#8217;t make them) with their <a href="http://www.sleepys.com/en/info/ReturnPolicy/?BN55">Comfort Exchange Policy</a> and their <a href="http://www.sleepys.com/en/info/PriceGuarantee/">8 Year Comfort Guarantee</a>. If all this talk about mattresses gets you excited instead of sleepy, then you should check out <a href="http://www.sleepys.com/en/info/Careers/">Sleepy&#8217;s Careers page</a>. I&#8217;ll warn you that even though the Careers page looks ok despite all the stock photography, <a href="http://jobs.sleepys.com:21000/OA_HTML/RF.jsp?function_id=17007&#038;resp_id=50731&#038;resp_appl_id=800&#038;security_group_id=0&#038;lang_code=US&#038;params=ds9twImFgyToOIBKmL5FWmSDGHgO0UALLcPcIpqPNzZ868fS0oxYvkyVf8zL3RGU&#038;oas=GcK_O-AwXCXIg6gVvd6ZlQ..">their job search function</a> is barely usable. There&#8217;s no simple listing of all of their jobs, and when you run a search with all categories selected, you get results that aren&#8217;t that helpful. Despite all this, I&#8217;ve found a few positions that you might want to take a look at including:</p>

<p>Those are the jobs that seem most appropriate for new grads; however, there are also a ton of sales positions available at Sleepy&#8217;s retail locations. I&#8217;ve heard they have a pretty extensive training program, so you may want to check those out too.</p>

<p>Being a fly fisherman, I sometimes get frustrated with living in Chicago. Not only are there few opportunities to go fishing without a decent drive, but the winters are way too long (it&#8217;s supposed to be spring now, and it&#8217;s not). To get through the winter I&#8217;ll often visit fishing stores, look at websites, and read through catalogs. It&#8217;s not much, but it&#8217;s all I have. And <strong>Cabela&#8217;s</strong> provides all three options. The company is based in <strong>Sidney, NE</strong>, and they&#8217;re the &#8220;largest mail-order, retail and Internet outdoor outfitter in the world.&#8221; It all started in 1961 with a tiny classified ad that Dick Cabela placed in a newspaper because he wanted to sell some fishing flies that he purchased while visiting Chicago for a furniture show (since Nebraska is even less of a fly fishing destination than Chicago is). Despite a lackluster response to the original ad, Dick Cabela kept trying. The company grew organically, and now Cabela&#8217;s is dominating three major retail channels. The truly amazing part of the story is that Cabela&#8217;s has been able to maintain their commitment to customer service throughout all of the growth. I&#8217;m not a big customer (I try to support local shops), but I have quite a few friends who are extremely loyal Cabela&#8217;s customers because of the quality of products and service.</p>
<h3>Outfitting Your Job Search</h3>
<p>If you love the outdoors, you probably already know all about Cabela&#8217;s. Their stores are massive shrines to everything that is great about being an outdoorsman. They have fish tanks, taxidermy, indoor mountains, archery ranges, and, obviously, lots and lots of products that you can buy. According <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabela's" rel="nofollow">to Wikipedia</a>, their store in Kansas City had 4 million customer visits in a single year, while the store in Hamburg, PA covers a quarter million square feet. Obviously, the ultimate Cabela&#8217;s experience requires visiting one of their stores, but their catalogs and website are pretty good proxies if you&#8217;re stuck at home. And if you are stuck at home, you might as well take a look at <a href="http://www.cabelas.jobs/">Cabela&#8217;s Careers site</a> too. <p>Cabela&#8217;s has one of the worst applicant tracking systems that I&#8217;ve ever seen. It&#8217;s &#8220;Powered by Kenexa,&#8221; and it&#8217;s completely unusable. I slogged through it so you don&#8217;t have to, so the positions above should give you a good idea of what kind of entry level opportunities exist at Cabela&#8217;s. There are more entry level postings than just these, but I can only bang my head against a wall for so long.</p>

<p>When you&#8217;re job searching, volunteering is a great way to both put your skills to use and develop new skills. There are countless non-profit organization that put volunteers to work in situations where they can really make a difference. One of our country&#8217;s largest volunteer organizations is <strong>Volunteers of America</strong>, which is a faith-based non-profit headquartered in <strong>Alexandria, VA</strong>. With their staff of 16,000 paid employees and 70,000 volunteers, they&#8217;re able to help &#8220;more than 2 million people in over 400 communities in 48 states.&#8221; Since the organization was founded in 1896, they &#8220;have supported and empowered America&#8217;s most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions.&#8221; An organization that has been around as long as Volunteers of America has must adapt to changes over the years. While they continue to remain focused on providing neighborly aid to all people, it looks like Volunteers of America is putting more emphasis on helping the growing population of aging Americans.</p>

People who live in mountain communities are extremely reliant on the ecosystems that exist above them, yet these ecosystems are some of the most sensitive known to man. <strong>The Mountain Institute</strong> is a non-profit organization that works to &#8220;develop policies, investments, and participatory approaches to enable mountain people, and the billions affected downstream, to understand, harness, and manage the interrelated and complex issues confronting the world’s mountains in the 21st century.&#8221; Their Executive Office is located in Washington, DC, while their Corporate Business Office is in Morgantown, WV. Additionally, they have <a href="http://www.mountain.org/about/offices.cfm">program offices</a> across Asia, North America, and South America.</p>
<h3>Climb to New Heights</h3>
<p>The Mountain Institute was founded in West Virginia in 1972, and it went international in 1987. TMI operates a variety of different <a href="http://www.mountain.org/programs/">programs</a>, all of which are clearly focused on making the most of our mountains. It all started with a 400-acre nature preserve on West Virginia&#8217;s tallest peak, but TMI has evolved to offer programs that focus both on environmental conservation and cultural and community development. Education is also a very large part of what The Mountain Institute does. Right now they&#8217;re looking for both Seasonal and Resident Field Instructors along with HQ Office Volunteers. The Field Instructor positions don&#8217;t pay all that much, but they offer unbelievable opportunities to be one with the mountains. <p>Not many of the companies on Fast Company&#8217;s list of “The World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies” are non-profit, and not many non-profits generate over $1 billion in annual revenue, but <strong>MITRE</strong> fits both criteria. I know that many of you responded in our survey that you wanted to see fewer technical jobs, but I&#8217;ve also noticed that most of the non-profit jobs that we feature on weekends aren&#8217;t very technical. MITRE, which has headquarters in Bedford, MA and McLean, VA offers an exception. They are an &#8220;organization chartered to work in the public interest&#8221; through &#8220;expertise in systems engineering, information technology, operational concepts, and enterprise modernization.&#8221; They do this work through &#8220;four Federally Funded Research and Development Centers,&#8221; with one focused on the Department of Defense, one on the Federal Aviation Administration, one on the Internal Revenue Service and U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and one for the Department of Homeland Security. </p>
<h3>Give MITRE a Try</h3>
<p>MITRE serves each of these groups by providing &#8220;a unique combination of broad operational knowledge and in-depth technical skills&#8221; while also developing new technology that can be transferred when appropriate. What is really astonishing about MITRE is its size. They have over 7,000 employees, and more than 65% of them hold an advanced degree. The organization is a hotbed for technical knowhow and creativity, and it&#8217;s great to know that they have thousands of talented people working to ensure the future of our country. On that note MITRE is constantly looking to hire smart people for both technical and non-technical positions. They have a very strong college recruiting program, which you can find out about <a href="http://www.mitre.org/employment/student_opps.html">here</a>. There are nearly 400 positions <a href="https://jobs.brassring.com/en/asp/tg/cim_home.asp?sec=1&#038;partnerid=119&#038;siteid=69">posted right now</a> on MITRE&#8217;s Jobs site, so browsing through everything may be a little tough. It maybe a little hard to sniff out which jobs are considered entry level, so you may want to reach out to Jessica Yu using <a href="http://www.mitre.org/cgi-bin/pubdir/phonebook.cgi">MITRE&#8217;s employee directory</a> to get your questions answered (or you can use the chat box on the <a href="http://www.mitre.org/employment/student_opps.html">Student Opportunities page</a> during working hours).</p>

<p>We apologize in advance to the fans of the New England Patriots and the Memphis Tigers (and any other team that has recently failed in a Championship game), because this is going to be a little bit painful for you. How can a post about a &#8220;Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice&#8221; be painful? Because <strong>World Vision</strong> is an organization that has worked out deals with major sports leagues (like the <a href="http://www.onedayonejob.com/jobs/nfl/">NFL, whose jobs we&#8217;ve featured</a>) to administer the donation of Championship paraphernalia that was produced for teams that didn&#8217;t win a championship. The NFL had to take a gamble on producing Super Bowl Winner t-shirts for a team that was 19-0 going into the big game. That gamble didn&#8217;t pay off for them, but it certainly did for the people who World Vision helps.</p>
<h3>More Than T-Shirts and Hats</h3>
<p>We were heeding the advice of our own article, <a href="http://www.onedayonejob.com/blog/the-couch-potatos-guide-to-job-search/">The Couch Potato&#8217;s Guide to Job Search</a>, when we saw <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3344982&#038;lid=espn_superbowl&#038;lpos=day_txt_nfl_gear">this on ESPN</a>. We took a quick look at World Vision, and decided to feature them on an upcoming weekend (because that&#8217;s when we feature <a href="http://www.onedayonejob.com/tag/non-profit/">non-profit jobs</a>). Although there&#8217;s a lot more to the organization than giving t-shirts to impoverished people (yes, there&#8217;s a village in Africa where everyone is wearing Patriots Super Bowl Championship 2008 t-shirts), World Vision certainly gets most of their press attention out of this one program. World Vision &#8220;extends assistance to all people, regardless of their religious beliefs, gender, race, or ethnic background.&#8221;  They do this in over 100 countries through their Community Development and Disaster Relief efforts.</p>
<p>If the good work that World Vision does isn&#8217;t enough to convince you to consider working for them, then you should also know that one of their major donors is the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. That means that they&#8217;re spending money that would otherwise be Paris Hilton&#8217;s &#8211; you&#8217;ve got to love that.</p>
<h3>You Won&#8217;t Be Folding T-Shirts</h3>
<p>World Vision has done a really nice job with their <a href="http://www.worldvision.org/worldvision/hr.nsf/stable/HR_home?Open&#038;lid=208&#038;lpos=lft_txt_Careers">Careers page</a> and their website overall. We&#8217;re not going to go into too much detail, because they&#8217;ve made it really easy for you to do the research on your own. The links that we&#8217;ve provided below should be a great starting point. World Vision has quite a few <a href="http://hostedjobs.openhire.com/epostings/jobs/submit.cfm?fuseaction=allpositions&#038;company_id=15719&#038;version=1">Job Openings</a>, although not too many of them are purely entry-level. We&#8217;ve picked out a few that look best suited for new college grads. <p>Typically young children are quite realistic about their career aspirations. They want to be firefighters, policemen, and teachers &#8211; professions that are in constant, steady demand. The more ambitious children might want a job as a doctor or veterinarian &#8211; still steady, but requiring a significant investment in education. It almost seems that as children we&#8217;re more realistic about life and careers than we are when we reach adulthood &#8211; except those kids who wanted to be astronauts. Since the beginning of the space program, there have only been 321 astronauts selected. Ever. There&#8217;s no surefire (or easy) way to <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/astronauts/default.htm">become an astronaut</a> &#8211; pilots, schoolteachers, doctors, scientist, and engineers have all been astronauts &#8211; but if selection as an astronaut is one of your life goals, you need to start preparing now. If you&#8217;re not ready for the commitment that it takes to be an astronaut, there are still plenty of entry-level jobs at <strong>NASA</strong> that will enable you to have a meaningful impact on the space program and NASA&#8217;s other endeavors.</p>
<p>NASA is a large government agency with many entry-level jobs, so instead of identifying each job opening, we&#8217;re going to guide you through how to their jobs website and help you find the information that you need before you decide to apply for a job. Usually, we complain that companies shortchange job searchers in terms of career related information on their website, but with NASA the problem is one of too much information. Maybe it&#8217;s a test to weed out candidates who can&#8217;t deal with navigating through complex situations, but we were a bit overwhelmed by <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/">NASA&#8217;s jobs site</a>. Before you jump in and start looking around the site, you might want to read <a href="https://ifmpmsfc11.ifmp.nasa.gov/nasa/info/applicant_guide.html">NASA&#8217;s Applicant Guide</a>. It&#8217;s audaciously long, but it covers everything you need to know to get a job at NASA. We couldn&#8217;t find any information on an application process tailored specifically to entry-level candidates (probably because there isn&#8217;t one); however, there is a guide for <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/studentopps/employment/default.htm">college students who are seeking employment</a>. There are also lists of <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/jobs/occupations.htm">occupation types</a>, applicable <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/jobs/entrypay.htm">entry-level pay ranges</a>, and <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/work/where.htm">NASA locations</a> to help you determine which jobs you should apply for. NASA also offers a <a href="http://www.nasajobs.nasa.gov/studentopps/employment/FAQs.htm">FAQ for students</a>. Like we said, there&#8217;s a ton of information.</p>
<p>In addition to NASA&#8217;s jobs site, there are a few other sites that are worth mentioning. First is <a href="http://nasapeople.nasa.gov/">NASA People</a>, which is a site that appears to be targeted towards current NASA employees. It covers almost any question that you could have about what it&#8217;s like to work at NASA, so serious job searchers should spend some time browsing this site. Second is the annual ranking of <a href="http://bestplacestowork.org/BPTW/rankings/">Best Places to Work in the Federal Government</a>, which <a href="http://bestplacestowork.org/BPTW/rankings/agency.php?code=NN00&#038;q=scores_large">ranks NASA at fourth</a>. This gives in-depth statistics about what kinds of people are more likely to be happy working at NASA (most employees), and what types of people are less likely to be happy at NASA. It also breaks down the rankings into a number of factors that may or may not be important to you.</p>
<p>Finally, there is <a href="http://blog.wired.com/wiredscience/2008/02/nasas-gen-y-ste.html">this Wired article</a> that details the struggles that NASA is having connecting with young people. The problem is pretty obvious. The space race to put the first man on the moon created an amazing amount of interest in NASA for our parents&#8217; generation, but we have been given technology like the Internet to explore the world that we live in. Many young people don&#8217;t see the point in exploring space, when there is so much to discover right at our fingertips. The article includes a presentation that was given to NASA management by some of NASA&#8217;s younger employees on how to improve engagement with Generation-Y/Millennials/whatever you want to call us by emphasizing NASA&#8217;s continued relevance to the issues that concern our generation. Even people who are not interested in jobs at NASA would do well to read this article as it brings up a lot of important questions about NASA, science, and the workplace. The Wired article ends by pointing to <a href="http://www.OpenNASA.com/">OpenNASA.com</a>, which is a blog by NASA employees. It&#8217;s excellent, and as authentic of a resource as you&#8217;ll find on what working at NASA is like &#8211; especially for someone who is not far removed from college. Although the blog is unofficial, it&#8217;s the type of resource that every company could use to improve their recruiting practices.</p>
<p>If you want an entry-level job at NASA, you&#8217;ve got a lot of research to do. Get moving!</p>
