In case you missed our e-mail from last week, Kembrel loved the response from our post about them so they’re offering a free VIP card (usually 20 bucks) to all ODOJ readers and $5 in store credit. Sign up here.

On Monday we took a look at Vertive, a company that builds internet properties to help people save money. Today we’re going to look at a company with a similar model of building and buying websites, but a much broader approach. Internet Brands is based in El Segundo, CA and started as CarsDirect.com in 1998. It was a successful brand for them, but in 2005 they realized that the platform they had built could be applied to other verticals. Now Internet Brands operates more than 100 websites that reach over a billion visitors every year. Amazingly, they’ve been able to generate almost all of this traffic organically (without buying advertising). This is all because of the platform that they’ve developed and the ability to share resources across brands. Internet Brands is a case study of how economies of scale can work on the web.

Get Branded

The best way to get a better feel for Internet Brands is to explore their… brands. There are a lot of them, but they typically fit into one of nine verticals: Automotive, Careers, Health, Home, Legal, Licensing, Money, Shopping, and Travel. Chances are that most of the brands will be new to you, but I found a few that I was familiar with. Unlike Vertive, Internet Brands doesn’t shed much light on how they operate. Even the Internet Brands Careers page is filled with mostly generic stuff like “Do you have energy, drive and ambition?” and “Do you have a strong sense of where you are going and how to get there?” Would any job seeker answer no to those rhetorical questions? At least Internet Brands makes up for it with a ton of job postings. Here are the ones that look well suited for an entry level job seeker:

Having written profiles on more than 1,500 companies, I start to see the same stories over and over again. Some business models are just better than others, and those are the ones that seem to keep popping up. One of the most effective models these days is based on providing a free online resource to help save people money and using affiliate programs to monetize the traffic. Sites like Slickdeals, Fatwallet, Savings.com, ShopAtHome.com, CouponCabin, and WhaleShark Media have all taken that approach and succeeded. Vertive is another. They’re based in Austin, TX, and they were founded “to provide search engine marketing consulting and affiliate marketing services.” They eventually started building their own web properties, and that turned out to be way more profitable than consulting. Vertive’s biggest property is Offers.com, but other properties include DailyDeals.com, CouponCodes.com, and Subscription.com.

Get an Offer from Vertive

Because their properties are separate brands, the Vertive.com website is solely dedicated to providing information about the company. Luckily, the information is by no means generic. Vertive actually offers a pretty good look at how their business works. The section title How We Do It is especially good at describing Vertives’ approach to performance marketing. They also provide some good information on what it’s like to work at Vertive. If you like what you see, then you’ll want to check out Vertive’s Jobs page. Right now they have a good number of opportunities that are suitable for new or recent grads including:

Online Merchandising Associate

Service Manager

Paid Search Associate

Business Analyst

Software Engineer

Software Developer

Web Production Designer

Even if Vertive isn’t a good fit for you, it’s worth spending the time to learn about their business. The performance marketing model is… performing extremely well lately. It’s time that you understand how it works.

There’s a reason that web startups with no semblance of a business plan but heaps of traffic continue to get venture capital funding. Consistently driving high quality traffic to a web property is extremely difficult, and almost all businesses need attention to succeed. Quality content is the cornerstone of driving traffic (that’s why I looked for writers when I was hiring interns), and content generation is not a core competency for most businesses. It is for Brafton. They’re a Boston, MA based “online news and content agency that offers integrated content marketing services.” They don’t brag about who their clients are like some other types of agencies (you can request live client samples), which makes sense since clients typically want people to think the content is coming straight from them.

Be Content at Brafton

I doubt any writers from Brafton will be winning Pulitzer Prizes, but I’m sure that’s ok with them. Their goal is to help their clients reach more customers by developing content that grabs attention and performs well on search engines and in social media. Brafton has a section of their website that is devoted to their business model, so I highly recommend that you read through that–including their case study–so that you can get a better sense of how they operate. They also provide information on their different teams, so you’ll probably want to read up on Account Management, Content Writing, and Social and E-mail. If you’d like to join one of those teams, you’re in luck because Brafton’s Careers page shows a ton of entry level opportunities. These include:

Graphic Resource Coordinator (Boston, MA)

Blog and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Market Research Executive (Boston, MA)

German News and Content Writer (Remote)

News and Content Writer (Chicago, IL)

Inside Sales Representative (Boston, MA)

News and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Jr. Web Developer (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Scottsdale, AZ)

Content Marketing Specialist (San Francisco, CA)

You won’t be writing the next great novel at Brafton, but I’m sure you’ll learn a ton about developing content for the Internet with a focus on ROI. That’s insanely valuable these days.

Nearly 500,000 teaching jobs will be added in the next decade. If you’re considering a career in education, take a look at our guide to entry level teaching jobs.

Company names usually take one of two directions. They either explain exactly what the company does (i.e. Accuweather), or they tell you absolutely nothing about what the company does (i.e. Benzinga). There’s a third type that sounds totally random but actually has a significant meaning, and those tend to be my favorite. Underground Elephant is one of those names. The company is based in San Diego, CA, and they offer “a complete turnkey solution” for customer acquisition in “a wide range of vertical markets.” How is this relevant to their name? Underground Elephant plays a huge role in their clients’ businesses, yet their participation is essentially invisible to everyone but insiders.

The Elephant in the Room

If you’re not familiar with the performance marketing industry, you probably have no idea what I’m talking about. How can a company that delivers tons of customers to their clients do so without being noticed? Watch this video on Underground Elephant to get a better idea of how their business works.

While what Underground Elephant does a good job of keeping a low profile when working for clients, they haven’t been able to do the same in the San Diego media. Their CEO was named a Most Admired CEO Finalist for the third consecutive year by San Diego Business Journal, and they’re also one of San Diego’s fastest growing private companies. I guess an elephant can only hide underground so long. Now that you’ve found them, you need to take a look at their Careers page. Right now they have some great openings for new or recent grads including:

Business Data Analyst

Business Development

Web Developer

There are a ton of great entry level or near entry level job opportunities at Underground Elephant, so don’t look past them. Not only does Underground Elephant look like a really cool company to work for, but they’re based in San Diego.

I can’t tell you how many bad careers sites I’ve seen over the past 4+ years. Companies with beautiful, easy to use websites often have jobs pages that make you want to poke your eyes out. Even the simple ones that just have a few paragraphs about the company and a listing of jobs are disappointing. Why can’t companies actually put some effort into convincing you to work for them? 360i certainly puts in the effort. I recently landed on their newly relaunched careers page via a link from Twitter, and I was thoroughly impressed. 360i is a digital marketing agency, and it’s pretty clear that they’ve actually put some of their in-house talent to work on the 360i Careers page. It tells a story; it provides a great user experience; it introduces you to the company before throwing job postings at you; and it actually makes you want to work at 360i (they have offices in New York, NY; Atlanta, GA; Detroit, MI; San Francisco, CA; and Chicago, IL).. This should be expected, but instead it’s the exception.

Do a 360

I usually say that the most important thing that you can look at in terms of a digital marketing agency is their client list and portfolio, but there’s actually one thing that’s more important. It’s the company’s website. If they’re not doing what they do for clients for themselves, then there’s something wrong. 360i does great work for themselves, and they also serve Bravo, Coca-Cola, J. Crew, Mattel, Oreo, Ugg and a bunch of other huge brands. 360i has done some really great work for themselves and for their clients, which is probably why they’ve been named one of Advertising Age’s “Best Places to Work and one of Fast Company’s “World’s Most Innovative Companies.” If 360i sounds like the kind of place that you’d like to work, check out their Careers page first, and then dive into their job postings. Current openings include:

Ad Operations Digital Coordinator (New York, NY)

If none of those positions seem like a good fit, take note that 360i categorizes their talent into: Insiders, Thinkers, Sharpshooters, Socializers, Makers, and Advisors. If you think you fit in one of those roles, don’t be afraid to submit a résumé for an unlisted position.

You probably should have already purchased and given all your gifts for the holiday season, but if you haven’t, it’s a wonderful time to get deals. Retailers are eager to grab a few more dollars from all of the people returning ugly sweaters and books they’ll never read, so they’re offering deals. And if you’re looking for deals, you’ll likely end up on some WhaleShark Media properties. They’re an Austin, TX based company that runs “the world’s leading marketplace for coupons and deals.” Their sites include RetailMeNot.com (one of my favorites), Deals.com, CheapStingyBargains.com, CouponShare.com, and a lot of others. I’m not exactly sure what separates these sites from each other, but they seem to do really well in search rankings and that is why they reach more than 265 million visitors every year.

A Whale of a Deal

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not brand loyal to RetailMeNot.com, but whenever I search for coupon codes, it seems one of their pages pops up. I can’t tell you how much money I have saved by taking 15 seconds to search for a coupon code when I’m making a purchase. This behavior is getting more and more common, and that bodes well for WhaleShark Media’s business model. If you’d like to learn more about that model and see how a profitable coupon business is built, check out WhaleShark Media’s Jobs page. Right now there are a number of opportunities or new and recent grads including:

Associate Software Engineer

Merchandiser – Deals2Buy.com

Accounts Coordinator

UX Designer

Visual Designer

There are a number of other interesting looking positions, but they all require more experience, so take a look at these and see if any of them make sense.

I went on a guided fishing trip this morning. The weather was pretty terrible, and the catching was nonexistent. As we were driving back to the hotel, the guide told us about a boat that recently sank and how the captain was the first one to abandon ship. That’s certainly not captain-like behavior, and it’s the opposite of what you’d expect from Captains of Industry, a Boston, MA based marketing and advertising agency that was started by an ad guy and a filmmaker. They excel at developing ” strategy-driven creative in all media – from websites to corporate videos to literature systems – that tells [their customers' stories] in unforgettable ways.”

Aye Aye Captain

Captains of Industry got its start as a freelance writing service in 1992, but it evolved into something much bigger when its founder started sharing office space with a filmmaker in 1996. They decided to work together and quickly began producing some pretty cool stuff. You can check out their latest work here. Their clients include Bose, First Wind, Akamai, Re/Max, and a bunch of other big names. If you want to get an even better feel for Captains of Industry, you should read their manifesto. You may also want to take note of some things that Captains are (we already know that they shouldn’t abandon ship):

/ Captains are storytellers

/ Captains take pride in our craft

/ Captains take ownership

/ Captains passionately want the client to succeed

/ Captains are driven to change the world

/ Captains never take themselves too seriously

/ Captains never quit

If you think that you have what it takes to be a Captain, then take a look at Captains of Industry’s Jobs page. Right now they’re looking for full-timers in Account Management and SEO and freelance Graphic Designers, Web Designers, Copywriters, Technical Writers, Illustrators, Producers, Web/Flash Programmers, and Art Directors. Additionally, you can also apply for future openings.

When I was a kid, I had eyes like a hawk. At my best I had 20/12 vision. Then in high school things started getting blurry, and I eventually had to get contact lenses. Luckily, humans have spent a ton of time and energy in developing technology that helps us see better. Whether you want to see something really small, far away, or in the dark, there’s optical equipment that can help you out. The thing is that microscopes, binoculars, night vision goggles, and even glasses aren’t something that you buy casually–you want to buy from someone who knows his or her stuff. OpticsPlanet is a Northbrook, IL based company that employs a whole bunch of those people. They are “one of the world’s leading online retailers of a wide selection of sport optics, tactical and military gear, scientific products, hunting gear, professional grade products and eyewear.” I get excited when I get a new contact lens prescription, so I bet getting to play with some of OptcisPlanet’s offerings would make me giddy.

Seeing Is Believing

When you end up on OpticsPlanet.com, it looks like a pretty generic e-commerce site. I would have never guessed that they generated $82.6 million last year, but thats’ what the numbers from the Inc. 5000 say. They’ve also been growing at a 113% rate over the past three-years, so they must be gaining a significant share in the optics market. I found a video on their About page that gives a pretty good intro to the company, so check it out below:

If you like what you see in the video and you also like the fact that OpticsPlanet was named one of “The Chicago Tribune’s Top Workplaces,” then you have to take a look at their Careers page. Right now they have some great opportunities for new or recent grads including:

User Interface Designer

Communications Designer

Content Project Manager

Junior Web Developer / JavaScript

The job search is a vulnerable time for most people, and that results in a lot of people trying to take advantage of those who are looking for work. This makes me very angry, which is why I always do my best to stick my neck out for job seekers. I won’t hesitate to turn down sponsors who seem even a little sketchy, and I’ve put a lot of effort into exposing job scams and pushing for employers to pay their interns. I guess you could call these the ethical duties of my job, and I take them extremely seriously. Josephson Institute for Ethics is a Los Angeles, CA based non-profit organization that also takes ethics extremely seriously (in case you couldn’t tell by their name). Their mission is to “improve the ethical quality of society by changing personal and organizational decision making and behavior.”

An Ethical Choice

Josephson Institute for Ethics focuses on five core areas: Youth, Sports, Business, Public Service, and Policing. The Institute was founded by a lawyer named Michael Josephson in 1987 in honor of his parents, and it does its work by developing and delivering “services and materials to increase ethical commitment, competence, and practice in all segments of society.” Josephson Institute is a bit unique as a non-profit in that they raise money by actually selling stuff (the aforementioned services and materials). Of course they also take donations and grants to allow them to work much more broadly than for their clients (it’s kind of weird to see a non-profit’s client list, right?). One of the projects from Josephson Institute that I find most interesting is the Ethics of American Youth Survey, which shows widespread problems with “lying, cheating, bullying, and other high-risk behavior in high school students.” If you find project like this one interesting, then you should definitely take a look at Josephson Institute for Ethics’ Jobs page on Idealist (it’s way more up to date than their actual Jobs page). Right now they’re looking for a Research Assistant, an Associate Web Producer/Writer, a Program Assistant – Character Counts, and a Marketing Project Manager. These look like really interesting jobs, so check them out.

Keeping up with fashion isn’t a priority for me, but I still like to dress well. That’s why I trust Bonobos and Gilt Groupe to do the curation for me, and then I just buy what I like from them (it also helps that I’ve accrued a lot of credits from both of them). I know that a lot of people are far more active in keeping up with fashion, which is probably why Refinery29 is growing so quickly. The New York, NY based company is aiming to be “the cornerstone of fashion, beauty, and shopping for a new generation” as they offer “the only 360-degree source for shopping, exclusive deals, trends, beauty news, local hot-spots, and at-home sneak-peeks of fashion’s finest.” That’s ridiculously ambitious, but the results so far indicate that they’re pretty much killing it.

Show Your Refinement

I learned about Refinery29 from a blog post by my friend Charlie O’Donnell. The post touches on something really cool that Refinery29 is doing that I think more companies should do. They started out by focusing on editorial and grabbing attention to sell to advertisers. That’s what most companies in this space do, and it works, but why not take the extra step? Refinery29 has built it’s own e-commerce product called Reserve, and it’s essentially built on the daily deal model. It’s smart because it allows Refinery29 to capture even more value from their users than they do by selling advertising. I think we’ll see more and more companies do this–build media products as channels to promote their own products (I guess it’s nothing new considering the same idea is where Soap Operas got their start). I highly recommend that you dig into Refinery29′s content and get a better feel for who they are. If you like what you see, then you should probably check out their Careers page. They have a bunch of cool opportunities that might appeal to new or recent grads including:

Account Manager

Miami Editor (Miami, FL)

Los Angeles Editor (Los Angeles, CA)

Marketing Data Analyst

UX + Interaction Designer

There are a bunch of other positions, but they generally have more significant experience requirements. Hopefully something at Refinery29 will catch your eye and be a great fit.

It’s not often that you see 25-year old companies on the Inc. 5000, but that’s exactly what ShopAtHome.com is. They got their start as a husband and wife team, and they’ve growing consistently since 1986. It seems that the growth has accelerated over the past few years, as ShopAtHome.com, which is based in Greenwood Village, CO, has a 442% three-year growth rate and generated $35.4 million in revenue last year. Now, ShopAtHome.com isn’t really what it sounds like. It’s not an online version of QVC. It’s a coupons site; in fact, it’s “one of the largest websites offering free online coupons, grocery coupons, cash back rewards, free samples, restaurant coupons and contests.” Their site had 37 million visits last year, which is a staggering number. What’s even more staggering is that they appear to have generated about $1 in revenue for every visitor.

Shop at Home, Work at Shop at Home

Although ShopAtHome.com does offer some forms of daily deals, they’ve really stuck to the traditional coupon model. It’s proven, and it obviously generates a ton of money. Essentially, ShopAtHome.com has built the ultimate audience (median age 35 with a household income more than $75K per year) for distribution of coupons, contests, and other types of deals. The killer feature is ShopAtHome.com’s Cash Back program, which rewards people with cash for shopping through the site. So far they’ve delivered $50 million back to consumers, so it’s been pretty effective. If you’re interested in what ShopAtHome.com is doing to save people money, then give their Jobs page a look. Right now they’re hiring an Online Marketing Data Analyst, and the position looks like a great fit for a new or recent grad. You may also want to check out their internships in Sales Support, Site Marketing, and Paid Search Marketing.

The thing that I love most about the Inc. 5000 is the diversity of the companies. While there are definitely some strong themes throughout the list, there are companies doing all kinds of things in all kinds of places–and succeeding. One of the biggest themes on the list is that online marketing is offering massive opportunity to new companies. One Click Ventures is a Greenwood, IN based company that is big on Internet marketing. Unlike many of the other companies on the list, they do the marketing for themselves, not for clients. One Click Ventures runs a number of e-commerce properties including ABC Neckties, Affordable Scarves, Handbag Heaven, Inexpensive Watches, Reading Glasses Shopper, TravelProducts.com, Socks4Life, and Sunglass Warehouse. Each of these sites is in a very competitive niche, so it should be no surprise that One Click Ventures claims to have a distinct competitive advantage with their “marketing engine” that “consists of a diverse team of subject matter experts, including SEO, PPC, email marketing, social media, affiliate marketing, conversion optimization and content development.”

One Click to a New Job

When I came across One Click Ventures, I knew their name sounded familiar. It was because one of my friends from Cornell works there now, and he just sent me an e-mail about some of their job openings. That coupled with One Click Ventures’ fast growth really got me interested. The Inc. 5000 has them at #542 with 619% three-year growth to $3.4 million in annual revenue. A big driver of that growth has been acquisitions. One Click Ventures finds online properties that they think can benefit significantly from their online marketing capabilities. In other words they’re able to significantly increase the value of a site just by acquiring it and getting it up and running in their system. It sounds fascinating, and I’ve heard great things from my friend. If you’re interested in what One Click Ventures is doing, head over to their Careers page and take a look at their open positions. Right now they’re looking for a Marketing and SEO Specialist, a Marketing Analyst, a Graphic Designer, and a Junior PHP Developer. If you’re interested, feel free to apply on your own or e-mail me at willy@onedayonejob.com and I’ll make an intro for you to my friend.

The fun thing about going through the Inc. 5000 looking for companies that offer interesting entry level jobs is that the list just keeps getting better as you move down the rankings. The companies may be growing a little more slowly than those at the top, but it’s often because they’ve reached a size where quadruple-digit growth is nearly impossible (so they have to settle for triple-digit growth). One company that has grown large quickly is Levelwing. They’re a full-service digital advertising agency based in New York, NY and Charleston, SC. Their big focus is on making data-driven decisions and using technology to measure the effectiveness of their work on a constant basis. They’ve grown at a 720% rate over the past three years, which brought them to $44.8 million in revenue last year.

Be Level Headed

Levelwing does pretty much everything that you’d expect an advertising agency to do, though the focus is definitely online. You can get a full rundown of the services that they offer here. They provide those services to a wide range of big name clients including the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, BMW, Le Creuset, Nickelodeon, Thrillist, and many more major companies. If you want to take a closer look at the kind of work that they’ve done for these companies, you can take a look at Levelwing’s Case Studies. If their work speaks to you, then you might want to head over the the Levelwing Jobs page. Right now they have a number of positions that might be suitable for new or recent grads including Account Analyst (Charleston, SC and New York, NY), Account Coordinator (Charleston, SC), Data and Reporting Analyst (Charleston, SC), Inside Sales Representative (Charleston, SC and New York, NY), Social Research Analyst (Charleston, SC), and SQL Database Developer (Charleston, SC). Give the jobs a look and see what gets you excited.

A few weeks ago I told you about a company called Sixthman that gets together groups of music fans and puts them on a cruise ship with their favorite artists. It’s a pretty cool idea that is making a bunch of money (even if it doesn’t sound like my kind of fun). Ludus Tours is another company that organizes group vacations, but they are focus on taking people to specific destinations for specific events. Their main focus is on sporting events like The Olympics, The World Cup, The Master’s, The Super Bowl, and other big events that are preceded with a “The.” However, they have branched out to do other types of trips like Oktoberfest in Munich, Carnaval in Rio, and The Running of the Bulls. They cover all the bases including travel, accommodations, tickets, and all of the other logistics involved with trips like these. San Diego, CA based Ludus Tours serves both individuals and groups, so you can book a tour for yourself or organize a group excursion. They must do a good job considering they’ve seen 1,253% three-year growth to $2.5 million in revenue.

Take a Tour

Part of what has made Ludus Tours successful is that they’ve developed partnerships with a ton of athletic governing bodies including USA Volleyball, USRowing, USA Wrestling, and lots more. Ludus Tours has also worked with some big name clients including Pepsi, Mercedes-Benz, ABC, IMG, and Octagon. Those last three should stand out, since they’re big names in sports–and they’re trusting Ludus Tours to make sure that their trips go on without a hitch. The best way to get a feel for the type of experience Ludus Tours offers is to go on one of their trips, but since you probably can’t do that right now, you should read through some of their testimonials. It should give you a better sense of how the business operates. If you like what you see, then head over to the Ludus Tours Jobs page. They have a number of positions posted. The best fit for a new grad is probably the PR Coordinator position (the linked job description is wrong), but they’re also looking for a Volleyball Account Manager, a Marketing Operations Manager, an Events Manager, and a Technology/IT Guru. Ludus Tours is also hiring London Tour Guides/London Event Staff for the 2012 Olympics, so that could be a cool opportunity as well.

Today is my favorite day of the year, at least when it comes to writing daily company profiles. Why? Inc. Magazine just released the 2011 Inc. 5000 List. It’s a ranking of the 5,000 fastest growing privately held companies in the United States. It includes all kind of businesses in locations all across the country. It’s one of the best job seeker resources out there. As I looked through the list I saw a lot of companies that I’ve already written about and a lot of new ones that don’t have any jobs posted. Then I saw Leadnomics–they came in at #48 with 3,932% 3-year revenue growth to $5.8 million in revenue last year. The lead generation and performance marketing company is based in Philadelphia, PA, and they’ve been growing rapidly in terms of both revenue and headcount.

Take the Lead

A lead is nothing more than contact information for someone who may be interested in a product or service. Leads are the lifeblood of businesses in which the sales process isn’t as simple as checking someone out at the cash register (or the online equivalent). Some industries where lead generation is essential include Financial Services, Education, Insurance, and Consumer Offers. In most scenarios the quality of the lead is extremely important–some people are far more likely to buy than others, and you want to focus on the easiest sales. The web has become an amazing lead generation tool, but finding quality can be difficult. Leadnomics is all about taking the entire lead generation process and optimizing each part of “the consumer purchasing decision.” That means that they take a scientific approach to how they “acquire traffic, capture leads, analyze and filter for quality and deliver leads in real-time.” Considering that Leadnomics’ business is entirely performance based and that they’re growing rapidly, it looks like they must have figured a few things out. If you want to work with them, check out their Jobs page. They have an open call for people interested in Performance/Internet Marketing, while they are also looking for a PHP Web Developer, a Paid Search Manager, a Web Application Developer (PHP/LAMP), and a Flash Web Graphic Designer. You can lead the way.

Yesterday, I was sitting on the beach waiting to get into a volleyball game and talking to a friend about cool companies in Chicago, IL. She mentioned that her company shares office space with a really interesting business that is in the legal space. We don’t typically cover law firms because our target market isn’t law school graduates (though I know at least a few subscribe). In many ways Total Attorneys resembles a law firm, but there’s one major exception: they don’t practice law. They offer cloud-based software solutions for individual lawyers and small firms, so that lawyers can spend more time lawyering and less time doing all of the other stuff that comes along with running a successful law practice.

Lawyer Up

Total Attorneys focuses on three key areas with their products. The first is a web-based Law Practice Management System. It’s kind of like Google Docs, but it’s completely tailored to lawyers and their specific use cases. The second product is a Virtual Receptionist Service. Total Attorneys offers receptionists who are trained to take legal phone calls, which frees up lawyers to focus on more important things than answering the phone. The third offering is the most interesting to me. It’s a Legal Marketing Platform that helps individual lawyers and small firms get more clients. Running a successful practice is all about having a good flow of incoming cases, especially for lawyers that take clients on a contingency basis (usually for a percentage of a settlement or judgement). Generating leads and turning them into clients could easily eat up all of a lawyer’s available time. Total Attorney’s Legal Marketing Platform makes it a much less time consuming process.

Being a lawyer and running a business require two very different skill sets. Some people are great at both, but even those people run out of hours in the day. Total Attorneys separates the everyday tasks that come along with running a law practice from the actual practice of law. They seem to be doing really well, which is probably why they have a number of jobs posted on their Careers page. The ones that look best suited for a new or recent grad include Consumer Advocate, UX Web Designer, Web Designer, Online Writer, SEO Specialist, and Sales Representative. You can check out all of the job descriptions here.

I keep finding myself talking about local marketing, and there’s a good reason for it. It’s an industry that has taken off in the last couple of years. Previously, the Yellow Pages and newspapers dominated local marketing. The web has eroded large parts of those businesses, but it has taken a while for new options to reach critical mass. Then businesses like Groupon and Yext realized that they could use the same sales strategy that the Yellow Pages and newspapers used, but sell marketing products and services that are results focused. Yodle is another one of these companies. They’re based in New York, NY (with offices across the country), and their mission is “to connect local businesses with consumers so simply and cost-effectively that business owners can’t imagine any other way to advertise.” They aim to achieve this by making online advertising a whole lot simpler for the average small business owner.

Can You Yodle?

Yodle got its start because a kid was helping his dad’s car dealership with online marketing. This kid, Nathaniel Stevens, realized that what he was doing could be applied to lots of different types of small businesses, so he came up with a plan to start a company that would work at a big enough scale to help all kinds of business owners attract new customers. Apparently Yodle is doing a good job, since they seem to keep growing. They do everything from building websites for businesses to running search advertising campaigns to setting up social media presences. You can learn more about their offerings here, and you can read some client case studies here. You’ll also want to be sure to check out Yodle.info, where they put the spotlight on some of their employees. If you like what you see, head over to Yodle’s Jobs page. They have a ton of opportunities for new or recent grads including: Sales Development Representative (Scottsdale, AZ), Sales Representative (Scottsdale, AZ; Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Charlotte, NC; and New York, NY), IT Analyst (Austin, TX), Software Engineer (New York, NY), Marketing Associate (New York, NY; Boston, MA; and Scottsdale, AZ), Search Marketing Analyst (Boston, MA; New York, NY; and Scottsdale, AZ), Search Marketing Consultant (Boston, MA; New York, NY; Charlotte, NC; and Scottsdale, AZ), Customer Support Specialist – Temp to Perm (Scottsdale, AZ), Organic Associate – Temp to Perm (Scottsdale, AZ), and Executive Assistant/Office Manager (New York, NY).
There’s no doubt that the web has changed the way that people find and make reservations at restaurants, yet most restaurants seem stuck in 2002 when it comes to handling their own web presences. It doesn’t make any sense considering how competitive the food industry is. You’d think that restaurant owners would want to use every possible advantage to capture customers and encourage people to eat at their restaurants. The only answer is that managing a web presence is too complicated for the average restaurant owner. That’s why SinglePlatform was founded. They’re a New York, NY based company (with job offerings across the country) that “provides hotels, restaurants, bars and PR firms one stop to manage their digital presence and gain customers.”

One Platform, One Job

SinglePlatform may sound familiar. That’s because we already featured them last December. You can get all of the details on SinglePlatform’s Careers page, or you can take a look at their available positions below.

Advertising is supposed to deliver results, but for the longest time it was nearly impossible to tell whether an ad was actually performing as it should. The Internet has changed that, and it’s caused problems for lots of businesses that rely on ad sales for revenue. However, there are plenty of other businesses that are reacting quickly to these market changes and giving advertisers what they want. One of these companies is ConsumerTrack, which is based in El Segundo, CA. They specialize “in creating, managing, optimizing and monetizing marketing campaigns for a variety of companies ranging from small lenders and finance groups, to Fortune 500 banks and blue chip companies.” These aren’t just any marketing campaigns though, they’re designed in a way to ensure that clients are getting a maximum return on investment for their advertising dollars.

Get on Track

ConsumerTrack mentions three business areas on their What We Do page: Lead Generation, Performance Based Marketing, and Customer Acquisition. I have a hard time differentiating between the three, but the basic point is that ConsumerTrack helps their clients acquire new customers at a cost that ensures profitability. Some examples of how they’ve built web properties to do this include GoInsuranceRates.com, IdentityProtect.com, and GoBankingRates.com. By combining creative marketing techniques with a scientific approach to data, ConsumerTrack is able to offer an easier path to generating leads and sales. If you’re intrigued by their multi-disciplinary approach, then you should take a look at their jobs. The ConsumerTrack Careers page only includes two positions suitable for new grads: Local Sales Account Executive and Software Developer. However, I found two more job opportunities on Startuply: Online Media Coordinator and Internet Marketing Media Buyer. The jobs look pretty interesting, so see if they fit your interests.

Very few brands can truly claim that they have loyal customers. And if you think about the ones that can (Apple for example), they usually don’t offer “loyalty programs.” If someone is loyal because you constantly reward them, then it’s not really loyalty, right? But that’s ok! Loyalty programs are an extremely effective marketing technique, and results are what matter—regardless of whether customer loyalty is genuine or synthetic. Loyaltyworks is an Atlanta, GA based company that “creates and manages full-service incentive, loyalty and reward solutions” for other businesses. Because running these types of programs can be complex for companies who want to stay focused on their core business, there’s a lot of room for Loyaltyworks to offer a full suite of of incentive, loyalty, and reward solutions.

Will You Be Loyal to Loyaltyworks?

Loyaltyworks focuses on three main areas: Customer Loyalty and Distribution Channel Sales Reward Programs, Employee Recognition and Reward Programs, and Sales Incentives. I realize that you probably have no idea what the differences are between all of these, which is why I recommend that you browse through Loyaltyworks’ Case Studies along with their Client Program Examples. They don’t seem to name clients, but you can see how companies in a variety of industries have used Loyaltyworks to retain customers, reward employees, and drive sales. If you want to consider a career with Loyaltyworks, you should really read up on how the rewards and incentives industry works. Get some background, and then check out their Jobs page. They don’t have much information on there, but they do invite you to reach out to them. Additionally, they’re currently looking for a paid Internet Marketing Intern, so that’s a clear sign that they’re interested in fresh talent.

Last night I went out to dinner with my girlfriend and her family. It was a restaurant that I’d never been to before, so I looked it up online to see what I should expect. The user experience on the restaurant’s website was pretty terrible. It was built in flash, and had a splash page that took forever to load. The menu was an image instead of HTML, and I never could load any pictures of the food. This doesn’t surprise me, because restaurants aren’t web businesses. They should excel at being a restaurant and leave the web stuff to someone else. That’s where SinglePlatform comes in. They’re a New York City based company that “provides restaurants one stop to manage their digital presence and gain customers.” SinglePlatform not only enables restaurants to publish all of the information that they want to share, but it also syndicates the restaurant’s content throughout a publisher network of “review sites, mobile applications, and related local guides.”

A SinglePlatform for Your Career

Now, it doesn’t appear that SinglePlatform replaces a restaurant’s website, but it does provide the opportunity to acquire lots of new customers. SinglePlatform has taken a page out of Yext’s playbook, and built their business on a pay-per-call model. That means that when the content they syndicate leads to a potential patron’s calling a restaurant, they get paid. This way restaurateurs can stick to running their restaurants while SinglePlatform takes over the online marketing. The brilliant thing is that the content that the restaurant is already creating anyway—new menus, specials, photos, etc—are all that SinglePlatform needs to help them find new customers. Instead of offering deals like most local marketing companies are these days, SinglePlatform is focused on showing diners what they’re missing out on. If you want a job in the restaurant industry without having to wait tables, check out SinglePlatform’s Careers page. Right now they’re looking for Internal Sales & Business Development Consultants in New York, NY and Sales & Business Development Consultants in New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Boston. These are Sales jobs, so you better be willing to work hard and have an outgoing personality.

Did your or a friend land a job through One Day, One Job? Let me know at willy@onedayonejob.com.

Maybe you haven’t noticed, but writing has become commoditized on the Internet. Good writing still stands out (which is why you’re reading this, right?), but when you’re looking for basic information, sometimes the stuff that Demand Media and other similar companies churn out is good enough. Now there are companies taking it to the next level. Narrative Science is one that we featured a while back, and today we’re going to take a look at Durham, NC based StatSheet. They have built “a collection of fan-centric, sports sites designed to give sports fans the information and analysis they want when and how they want it.” But there’s a twist. They have a dirty, little not-so-secret. Their “technology platform generates content automatically in real-time.” In other words, the computers are doing all of the reporting and content generation. That’s why StatSheet is able to have sites devoted to every single one of the 345 Division I college basketball teams.

What Story Does Your StatSheet Tell

For me, running a web business is all about generating quality content, even if I can’t do it on a huge scale. There are thousands of jobs sites with millions of low quality postings. I want to stand out by doing something different. In sports journalism, it’s almost the opposite. There’s tons and tons of quality content—but only for the top teams. I mean, until last year my college basketball team, Cornell, barely got any coverage beyond the Cornell Daily Sun, which isn’t even published on the weekends when the team plays. StatSheet offers fans like me instant coverage of their team with a dedicated site.

Each site will include data driven insights, compelling narratives, game previews, game recaps and over twenty additional article categories, as well as photo and video highlights. In addition, each site will be accompanied by its own Twitter account, Facebook fan page and mobile application.

These sites are built on 500 million stats, and consist of more than 1 million pages. This shouldn’t be a surprise considering StatSheet churns out more than 10,000 articles per month. This means that StatSheet has an amazing amount of search engine indexable content that they can slap ads on. It’s a pretty powerful business model. It’s also a scary one for journalists and writers. Nobody wants to be replaced by a computer, but that’s where the future is heading. You can fight it, or you can join in and check out jobs at StatSheet. Oddly enough, the one group that they’re looking for right now is Sports Writers. I’d imagine that they’d also love to hear from you if you can help out on the Software/Web Development, Marketing/SEO, or Business Development side. It looks like a really fun place to work for sports lovers, and you can reach out to them at robbie@statsheet.com.

One of the fun things about researching companies every day is that sometimes I get to learn more about my neighbors. If I hadn’t been cruising through the Inc 500, I probably never would have taken a second look at the building just a block from me, which I can see right now out my office window. However, it happens to house Rise Interactive, a Chicago, IL based “full-service Internet marketing company” that services “companies of all sizes, from startups to the Fortune 500.” They’ve seen 658% growth over the past three, and that led them to $2.6 million in annual revenue last year. Their site isn’t as flashy as many of the interactive agencies that we’ve featured in the past, but that makes sense when you look at the services that they offer—they seem much more focused on results-based areas like SEO, Paid Search, Display Advertising, and Affiliate Marketing.

When Do You Rise?

I’m really interested by the kind of work Rise Interactive does because a lot of it overlaps with what I do to run my sites. If you take a look at Rise Interactive’s Client List, you’ll see that they work with a mix of familiar names and more recent upstarts. If you want to dig even deeper, you can read their Client Testimonials and take a look at their Client Case Studies. If you have never considered a career in online marketing before, it’s definitely worth thinking about—especially because people from a variety of academic backgrounds can thrive in the industry. If you want to learn a little more, you can take a look at the Online Marketing Resources that Rise Interactive provides, then you can check out their Job page or their specific Jobs page for new grads. You can apply for a specific position like Internet Marketing Consultant, or you can just apply generally.

You probably don’t even notice it happening around you, but the world of marketing is changing. Companies used to pay to be seen, then they started paying for clicks. Now it’s all about pay for performance. Advertisers want to know that they’re getting a significant return on their investment. Largo, FL (it’s near Tampa, not Key Largo) based The Media Crew is yet another Inc. 500 company that is growing quickly because they see the future. The Media Crew has been around since 1999, but they’ve really experienced great growth over the past three years—810% to $4.5 million in annual revenue, if you want to be exact. By helping generate leads for other businesses, they’ve been able to become a substantial business on their own.

Join the Crew

The Media Crew may have one of most bush league logos that I’ve ever seen, but I guess it hasn’t affected their results—and that’s what they’re focused on. A large part of The Media Crew’s business is providing a suite of services that includes E-mail Marketing, Lead Generation, Co-Registration, Affiliate Marketing, Search Engine Optimization, Design (including logo design, hmmm), Direct Mail & Telemarketing, and even Call Center Solutions. There’s also Revenue Street, which is their affiliate marketing program. Performance marketing truly is the future, so The Media Crew would be a great place to learn the ropes. If you check out their Careers page, you’ll see that they’re looking for people in Affiliate Marketing Management, Email Marketing & Display Advertising Sales Management, and Web Development. They don’t provide a ton of info on the jobs, but you should reach out to them to learn more—they were named one of Florida’s Best Companies to Work For by Florida Trend.

Believe it or not, we’ve actually covered a fair number of entry level employers in Utah, but I think today’s company might have the most personality of them so far. Neutron Interactive is a Salt Lake City based interactive agency that is taking online business to the next level. Neutron Interactive is an Inc 500 company that has grown 812% over the past three years. Their annual revenue was $9.5 million last year, so they’re quite big when compared to many of the other interactive agencies that also made the list.

What Do You Know About Neutrons?

Unfortunately, Neutron Interactive doesn’t seem to show off any of their work on their website, but they do have a list of things that they do “ridiculously well,” which include: Affiliate Marketing, Banner/Media Marketing, Social Media, Creative, Email Marketing, Recruitment Marketing, Internet Marketing, Interactive PR, Leads & Lead Scoring, PPC Management, Product Development, Proprietary Technology, Search Engine Optimization, Web Analytics, Web Design & Consultation, and Conversion Optimization. Neutron Interactive is also big on showing off their culture and their team. That means that you can get a good, inside look at what it might be like to work there just by browsing their website. If you’re excited about what you see, you’ll obviously want to check out the Neutron Interactive Jobs page. They have 7 positions posted right now, and a few seem well suited for new or recent grads. These include Junior Software Developer and The Ultimate Marketing Specialist. The other positions require a little bit more experience, but you may want to check them out too. They also offer the option to submit a general job application.

Yesterday we talked about one way that brick and mortar businesses are catching up with their online counterparts, and today we’re going to dig deeper into how the Internet is changing the landscape for local businesses. In the past we’ve look at companies like Yelp, Groupon, Yext, and even Google that help local businesses do a better job of marketing themselves. Today we’re going to take a look at Demandforce, a San Francisco, CA based company that helps “service businesses thrive in the Internet economy.” How do they do this? Demandforce provides software-as-service that transforms a business’ customers into a powerful social network. By encouraging referrals and reviews from existing customers, the software helps attract new customers. While it also helps businesses retain existing customers by making it easy to stay in touch with them.

Demand a Job

Some of the businesses that are best suited to Demandforce are Dental Practices, Automotive Repair Facilities, and Spas & Salons. If you’re still not clear on what it is exactly that Demandforce does, check out this short video that explains it pretty well:

Basically, Demandforce is an automated platform that encourages customers to take specific actions. Apparently it’s so effective that Demandforce promises $3 in value for every $1 that a company spends on Demandforce. That’s a great return, much like Demandforce’s 816.7% three-year growth rate. If you like what you see with Demandforce, than you should definitely consider working for them. They have a number of job opportunities including entry level positions in Client Services and Sales. There’s also a Facebook Application Engineer position available along with a few other mid-level opportunities.

Thanks to all of you who wished me a happy birthday. It’s great hearing from readers! And if you didn’t e-mail me, why not take a few minutes to let me know why you love One Day, One Job or how I can make it better. Just hit reply.

I moved to a new apartment two weeks ago, but I’ve been forced to work out of my local Starbucks since then because AT&T likes to make you wait a couple of weeks until they install your Internet. It was fun watching people stop in as part of their morning routine, and I also ran into a few friends who apparently frequent this particular Starbucks (I had no idea). And I got offered a job. Some CEO saw that I was reading SEOmoz’s Blog, and asked if I did SEO. When I told him yes, he asked if I needed a job. I obviously said no, but I did give him my card. There are two points to this story. The first is that serendipity can happen in the job search, but nobody is going to offer you a job if they see you browsing Monster.com at Starbucks. You need to be working on something interesting and valuable. People will notice, and they’ll want to hire you. The second is that this guy has some needs at his company, which happens to be #262 on the Inc. 500. The company is named Cellit, and it’s based here in Chicago, IL. They provide “mobile solutions to all by combining world-class customer service and marketing know-how with engineering expertise.” And they must be doing it well—they’ve seen 1,187% growth over the past three years to $2.5 million in revenue.

Cell Yourself

As you can tell by their name, Cellit is a company that is entirely focused on mobile platforms. If a business wants to get into mobile marketing, Cellit can help them. They have platforms like Cellit Classifieds, Cellit Climate, House4Cell, and CouponZap, while they also do Custom Mobile Application Development. Mobile is just getting bigger and bigger, so it should be no surprise that Cellit has already worked with names like IKEA, KFC, The Tribune, Maggie Moo’s, Subway, and Taco Bell. To see what Cellit has done for each of these companies, you can check out their Case Studies. Now, Cellit doesn’t have a jobs page, but we already know that they’re looking to hire if they come across the right person. Obviously they need help with SEO, and there’s also a chance that they could use help on the Web/Software Development side or the Account Management/Sales side. You’ll just have to reach out to them to find out. Or you could try showing off at the Starbucks at Franklin and Chicago and wait for an offer. I’d go with the former.

Usually when a company has a weird name and no website of their own, you start to think that they may be some kind of entry level scam. Not having a home page for you company is a big warning sign; however, I’m not too worried about Quidsi. They’re a Jersey City, NJ company that made it to the Inc. 500 with 1535% three-year growth to $182.5 million in annual revenue. That’s two orders of magnitude great than most of the other Inc. 500 companies we’ve looked at. As far as I can tell, it’s all coming from two businesses—Diapers.com and Soap.com. Both are retail sites that allow you to buy household goods easily online. Although I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons for their success, you have to think that Quidsi has truly reaped the benefits of owning some top notch domain names.

Change Diapers and Wash Your Hands

Diapers and soap obviously aren’t the most exciting things, but a lot of people need them. A lot. If you want to order either online, you’re likely to type the word in to Google and see what comes up. Diapers.com and Soap.com rank extremely well in Google, so they get a ton of sales. Soap.com was actually launched only a few months ago, and it already looks like it’s doing well. The lesson you can learn from Quidsi is that businesses can do extremely well by carving out a small niche and owning it. Amazon.com may sell everything, but Quidsi can compete by being laser focused on a few product categories. If you’re interested by Quidsi’s approach, you can check out their Jobs page on Diapers.com (Soap.com has the same jobs listed). They have quite a few opportunities posted, and the following seem suitable for new or recent grads (not all are entry level, but they’re still worth looking at): Contracts Administrator – Merchandising, Soap.com Copywriter, Marketing Copywriter, Customer Care Representative, E-Commere Product Manager, Diapers.com E-mail Marketing Manager, E-Commerce Graphic Designer, Merchandising Assistant, SEM Manager, SQL Programmer, Social Media Community Manager, Interaction Designer, and UX Designer. They have lots of cool opportunities, so check them out.

Judging from my Google Analytics stats, you most likely found One Day, One Job through Google. Beyond content development (writing these posts every day), one of my biggest business priorities is search engine optimization (SEO). If I make it easy for college students to find this site through search engines, then I’ve overcome one of the biggest challenges that an online business faces—reaching new customers/users. SEO can be extremely valuable for all kinds of businesses, which is why it shouldn’t be a surprise that a company like New York City based Conductor has been able to grow at a 1859% rate over the past three years to $10.4 million in revenue. They are an SEO technology company that works with “more than 250 of the Fortune 500 and Internet Retailer 500… to continually measure, improve and manage their natural search efforts in order to increase site traffic and revenue.” The great thing about SEO is that it’s an investment that pays dividends over the long term, so it’s an area that should only continue to grow over the next decade (unless Google decides to really mess with us).

Putting the Search in Job Search

The problem with the SEO industry is that there are a lot of bad characters who sell services but don’t really know what they’re talking about. Luckily, some of the world’s most impressive brands trust Conductor for SEO help. These include Netflix, 1800CONTACTS, Marriott, Progressive, The Ladders, and quite a few more. Most of those businesses rely heavily on lead generation, so SEO is especially important to them. Much of Conductor’s business is built on their Searchlight technology, which is an SEO Management Platform that analyzes massive amounts of data for companies at the enterprise level. In addition to their platform, Conductor also offers a range of professional services with a big focus on Link Building. As long as they can keep helping other businesses find new customers through search, they’re going to keep growing and winning awards like: Best Place to Work in NYC, Inc. 500, and Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year. If you’d like to be a part of it, then you need to take a look at Conductor’s Jobs page. They have a couple of opportunities that might be appropriate for new or recent grads including Java/Middle Tier Architect and Market Development Representative. Give them a look.

Most people see insurance as a good thing. I see it as more of a necessary evil. The truth is that the large majority of people are losing money when they’re paying for insurance. Insurers wouldn’t take on your policy if it wasn’t going to be profitable for them. You’d be amazed at how good insurance companies are at predicting risks, which is why their business operations are so largely skewed towards getting new customers. Ever wonder why GEICO, Allstate, State Farm, and other auto insurers are so aggressive with their advertising? It’s because if you sign up, they’re going to make money. This means that generating leads for insurance companies is a huge business, and that’s why Seattle, WA based QuoteWizard came in at #36 on the Inc. 500 this year with 5,950.5% three-year revenue growth. They provide a simple online tool to help consumers find the best quotes for Auto Insurance, Home Insurance, Renter/Condo Insurance, Health Insurance, and Life Insurance. By organizing and presenting information in a simple way, QuoteWizard is able to generate a ton of leads for insurance companies—and for every lead they generate, they get paid.

Are You a Wizard?

There are a ton of Internet business like QuoteWizard. They don’t actually sell anything, but they provide information that is extremely valuable to consumers. Lead generation is big business, and it’s all based on being able to drive traffic. That means that online marketing is essential to businesses like QuoteWizard. This includes a variety of different things like content generation, search engine optimization, ad buying, software/product development, and more. QuoteWizard does whatever they can to get people on their site, and then they use their content and the QuoteWizard application to refer people to different insurance companies. If you want to learn about results-based online marketing, a place like QuoteWizard is a great place to do it. Their Jobs page shows a number of positions that look interesting, including Online Media Analyst, Jr. Sales Representative, Online Media Buyer, and Web Developer.
