When you’re job searching, volunteering is a great way to both put your skills to use and develop new skills. There are countless non-profit organization that put volunteers to work in situations where they can really make a difference. One of our country’s largest volunteer organizations is Volunteers of America, which is a faith-based non-profit headquartered in Alexandria, VA. With their staff of 16,000 paid employees and 70,000 volunteers, they’re able to help “more than 2 million people in over 400 communities in 48 states.” Since the organization was founded in 1896, they “have supported and empowered America’s most vulnerable groups, including at-risk youth, the frail elderly, men and women returning from prison, homeless individuals and families, people with disabilities, and those recovering from addictions.” An organization that has been around as long as Volunteers of America has must adapt to changes over the years. While they continue to remain focused on providing neighborly aid to all people, it looks like Volunteers of America is putting more emphasis on helping the growing population of aging Americans.

Volunteers of America also has this Overview sheet that provides some really specific information about the organization’s work. If you’re moved by their mission, then you’ll want to check out Volunteers of America’s job opportunities. They separate these into three groups: National Office, Nationwide, and Health Services. The Nationwide section actually has over 200 positions posted, along with 25 entry level opportunities, so it probably makes the most sense to check out. They have a wide range of opportunities, and they’re in a variety of locations, so you should be able to find something that piques your interest.

Now, I’m not one to worry much about Global Warming, especially when I’m enjoying a snap of 60-plus degree weather in Chicago in mid-November, but that doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about the environment. There’s no doubt that our way of life has numerous negative impacts on the natural world around us, and we’re not doing enough to minimize those impacts. Environment America is a nationwide, non-profit “federation of state-based, citizen-funded environmental advocacy organizations” that is headquartered in Washington, DC. Their strategy is focused on combining “independent research, practical ideas and tough-minded advocacy to overcome the opposition of powerful special interests and win real results for the environment.” (Yes, they’re another special interest that is fighting special interests.) They’ve been around for 30 years, and I’m sure that they’re going to keep on going as long as mankind is harming the environment.

Try a New Environment

While much of Environment America’s work is focused at the state level, some of of the broader initiatives that they’re currently working on are Repower America (Green Energy), Stopping Global Warming, Our Rivers, Lakes & Streams, and Stop Toxic Pollution. As you can see, Environment America spreads their work across a lot of issues, which means that they have a ton of different job opportunities. You can find the full rundown here. What environmental issues are you most concerned with?

The Balsams

One of my least favorite things about the “real world” is that summer doesn’t automatically mean vacation. Unless you’ve gone into teaching, you’re expected to keep showing up for work every day like it’s the middle of February—even if it’s totally beautiful out. The good thing is that “real world” summer usually lasts from May through early October (at least here in Chicago). Even though you have to keep going to work, your summer isn’t regimented by school’s start and end dates. Anyway, we all know that summer is really all about vacation, and for many that means hitting up a resort like The Balsams in Dixville Notch, NH. In the summer you can play golf or tennis, go kayaking or mountain biking, take a hike, or just relax. In the winter there’s skiing, sleigh rides, snowshoeing, snow mobile races, and I’m sure fireplaces to warm up near. It’s an old school New England inn with modern luxuries and fine dining. I’ve never been there, but I know the style—and I like it.

Take a Trip to The Balsams

Hopefully you’re not mad at me for getting you all excited about the prospect of a luxury vacation when you are freaking about graduating without a job and trying desperately to avoid a permanent vacation of prolonged unemployment. Obviously, the reason that I’m telling you all about The Balsams is that they have job opportunities; in fact, they have a job/internship opportunity that lets you enjoy all of the luxuries of a vacation at The Balsams while getting paid to do it. They’re looking for an “Inn-Bedded Resorter” to live The Balsams life for a summer and report on it. For 2 months you’ll get $2,500, a room in the hotel, 3 meals a day, and free reign of the resort. Your job will be to liveblog/tweet/facebook your life with a variety of technological and social media tools at your disposal. How can you not get excited about a job application that asks you about your proficiency in areas like Fly Fishing, Dancing, Alpine Skiing, Making Cocktails, and Bird Watching? It’s pretty much the ultimate opportunity for someone interested in PR and Social Media. However, if you’re more into the Hospitality Management side, there are plenty of other opportunities available at The Balsams. You just need to check their for all of the info and the application. Student Conservation Association

In yesterday’s post on Civic Works, I told you all about my first summer job doing manual labor. If I had known that I’d be writing about the Student Conservation Association today, I probably would have saved the story, as they’re an organization that puts students to work protecting and restoring “national parks, marine sanctuaries, cultural landmarks and community green spaces in all 50 states.” They’re based in Charlestown, NH with regional offices in Oakland, CA; Pittsburgh, PA; Seattle, WA; and Washington, DC. The SCA offers an endless variety of conservation opportunities for students, and they’ve been doing it since 1955 when a Vassar College student named Elizabeth Cushman wrote about the idea in her senior thesis. Now the SCA takes on 4,000 interns and volunteers every year, and they combine for “more than two million hours of conservation service per year.”

Conservation Is Key

As a fly fisherman, I know how important conservation is. Luckily our rivers, streams, lakes, and oceans have an army of passionate people who are always working to protect the places where they can practice their favorite sport. But what about the places that don’t have so many devoted conservationists? That’s where the SCA steps in. From cultural landmarks to grizzly bear habitat, if conservation will help, you can bet that the SCA has students working there. If you think that sounds like a fun way to spend some time, then check out The SCA’s Serve page. You have the option to take on one of their thousands of internships, serve on a Conservation Corps, or look at jobs in the SCA office. There are way too many options for me to outline them all, but the SCA site is pretty decent, so you should be able to find what you’re looking for.

What conservation project is most important to you?

I swear that half of all college grads want to work in sports and entertainment. Unfortunately most of the job postings you’ll find in those industries are actually scam jobs. Getting a position at a legitimate sports and entertainment company is not easy, but with AEG you have a shot. They call themselves “one of the leading sports and entertainment presenters in the world,” and although that sounds broad, it’s a good description. AEG operates in a number of business areas including Facilities, Sports (Teams and Events), Music (Events), and Merchandising. They own/control arenas like the STAPLES Center, Conseco Fieldhouse, and the Prudential Center, while also owning professional sports teams like the LA Kings and Los Angeles Galaxy (can you tell that AEG is based in Los Angeles?). They’ve also “promoted tours by artists including Britney Spears, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Christina Aguilera & Justin Timberlake, The Dixie Chicks, Yanni, Paul McCartney, Usher, Kanye West, Prince, Rod Stewart, Bon Jovi, Nickelback, and PopTarts Presents American Idol.” And that’s not even half of it. AEG is a major player in sports and entertainment, and a great place to start a career.

Join AEG’s Team

Describing AEG’s business in a few paragraphs isn’t easy, so I guess that the best way to put it is that if it has to do with sports or entertainment, they’re probably involved in some way. That means that AEG offers job opportunities in a wide variety of areas. They actually have a halfway decent job search function on their site, so you can narrow things down by AEG Company, Area of Interest, Location, or Facility. They have nearly 100 jobs posted (a lot of them are internships though), and they’re in locations all across the country. I’m not going to list entry level opportunities for you, so you’ll have to do the searching yourself, but you should note that AEG’s job offerings are typically in areas like Accounting & Finance, Administrative & Clerical, Box Office, Creative Services, Event Services, Facilities Operations, Guest Services, Merchandising & Retail, Player Operations, Real Estate, and Sales & Marketing. Appalachian Mountain Club

I don’t know if you’ve ever spent anytime on the Appalachian Trail, but if you haven’t, you should. The trail stretches from Georgia to Maine, while the range of mountains touches as far south as Alabama and as far north as Newfoundland. It’s 1,500 miles of natural beauty that is prime territory for naturalists and adventurers. Back in 1876 there was a club called the Appalachian Mountain Club started in Boston for people who enjoyed the range. Now the club consists of more than 12 chapters and 100,000 members—it’s the “nation’s oldest outdoor recreation and conservation organization.” They’re still based in Boston, and they’ve developed into a non-profit that promotes “the protection, enjoyment, and understanding of the mountains, forests, waters, and trails of the Appalachian region.”

Outdoor Enthusiasts Wanted

The work that the Appalachian Mountain Club varies greatly. They fight for conservation, educate people on safe outdoors practices, maintain trails, and put on more than 8,000 trips a year. It’s a great organization that spans many different interest groups—it’s not just the hikers or the birdwatchers or the fisherman. It’s for everybody who loves being outdoors in the Appalachians. The scope of their work is really impressive, and if you want to be a part of it, you should check out the AMC’s Jobs page. Full-time opportunities include Web Production Associate and Senior Online Marketing Associate (it’s pretty entry level if you have a background in online marketing), which are both based in Boston, along with Hospitality Coordinator in Bretton Woods, NH and Storehouse Supervisor in Gorham, NH. There are also seasonal opportunities in Trail Crew type positions in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. Have you spent any time in the Appalachians?

Usually when I’m looking at the job requirements to determine whether a position is suitable for new college grads, I’m looking at things like education, experience, skills, and job functions. It’s not often that I’m thinking about security clearance, but at today’s company, SPARTA, it’s essential for most of their positions. (Now, don’t worry if you don’t already have Top Secret Clearance, they still might have jobs for you as long as you didn’t get into too much trouble during your college years or before.) The reason that there’s all this talk about clearance is that SPARTA is a company whose “core business areas include strategic defense and offense systems, tactical weapons systems, and space systems” and whose “major intelligence credentials include intelligence production, computer network operations, and information assurance.”

This Is SPARTA

If you’ve spent your time in college attending peace protests, then SPARTA probably isn’t for you, but if you have a hard science or engineering background that you’d like to put to practical use, then you’ll be fascinated by the job titles that SPARTA is hiring for. Current openings include Weapons Effects Analyst, Cyberspace Analyst, and WMD Engineer (don’t worry, this job is about “supporting national efforts in developing, integrating and synchronizing capabilities to combat weapons of mass destruction”). These aren’t SPARTA’s entry level jobs, but they demonstrate what kind of projects the company is working on. They have more than 100 jobs listed right now, and quite a few of the opportunities actually are entry level. These include Integration Engineer, Software Engineer, Systems Engineer, and Linux/Unix Software Engineer. These are the only jobs that are identified as entry level, but you should definitely check out the rest of their job listings. For you to get here and read this (or for this to get to you if you’re an e-mail subscriber) a quick but complicated journey through the tubes of the Internet is necessary. In fact, to reach us by our domain name, OneDayOneJob.com, instead of our IP address (which is kind of like a telephone number for websites) takes as many as 7 steps. The story of how our daily e-mails get to our e-mail subscribers is just as complicated. As a website grows, the process becomes even more complex. One Day, One Job is on a single server (and the same server as One Day, One Internship), but a site like Facebook has many different servers. Figuring out which users to send to which servers becomes a very complicated problem. Luckily, there are companies like Dynamic Network Services to ensure that businesses and individuals don’t have to deal with the complicated issues of the Domain Name System.

A Dynamic Work Environment

That’s all you’re going to get from us on the nature of DNS. We’re nowhere near experts on the subject, and we figure that anyone considering employment at Dynamic Network Services probably doesn’t need an explanation of what the company does – at least not from us. Dynamic Network Services consists of three brands, all of which operate in similar spheres. They are DynDNS, Dynect, and DynTLD. There’s also the Dynamic Network Services lab, which is home to their beta services and research endeavors. All of the businesses are located in one office in Manchester, NH. They say there are “no bouncing rubber balls, two story gyms and definitely no organic salad bars,” but they do have a Segway, lava lamp, and a Flickr stream. They boast a casual work environment, that appears to boost creativity and even allows for some fun.

Dynamic Network Services currently has two job openings that might be a good fit for a new college graduate: Customer Support Technician and FreeBSD/Unix Systems Administrator. The Customer Support Technician appears to be a clear cut entry-level job, while the Systems Administrator opportunity is probably best left for someone who has significant experience with the systems outlined in the job description. Application instructions are in a yellow box on the right side of the job listings page, and there are a few specific details that you need to follow to make sure that your application gets read. Dynamic Network Services is also completely open to cold calls, so if you think you’d be a great addition to their team, but not in the capacities specified in their job openings, then send them a letter telling them why they need to hire you.
