
The job search is a vulnerable time for most people, and that results in a lot of people trying to take advantage of those who are looking for work. This makes me very angry, which is why I always do my best to stick my neck out for job seekers. I won’t hesitate to turn down sponsors who seem even a little sketchy, and I’ve put a lot of effort into exposing job scams and pushing for employers to pay their interns. I guess you could call these the ethical duties of my job, and I take them extremely seriously. Josephson Institute for Ethics is a Los Angeles, CA based non-profit organization that also takes ethics extremely seriously (in case you couldn’t tell by their name). Every job has its perks. Sometimes you have to look hard to find them, and sometimes they’re made apparent to you on your first day. A big part of the reason that I decided to intern at Orvis was that I knew I’d get a 50% discount off of everything they sold. It was awesome for someone as addicted to fly fishing as I am. As I proved, perks can be a huge recruiting tool for employers. Yet a lot of employers do a terrible job organizing, managing, and letting their employees know about perks. What’s the point in offering something if employees don’t even know it’s available to them? PerkSpot is a Chicago, IL based company that helps employers solve this problem. They have built a “proprietary technology platform” that provides “employees with a single point of access for specialty benefits, personal insurance products, and discounts on consumer goods and services.” It’s all online and in one place.

Keeping up with fashion isn’t a priority for me, but I still like to dress well. That’s why I trust Bonobos and Gilt Groupe to do the curation for me, and then I just buy what I like from them (it also helps that I’ve accrued a lot of credits from both of them). I know that a lot of people are far more active in keeping up with fashion, which is probably why Refinery29 is growing so quickly. The New York, NY based company is aiming to be “the cornerstone of fashion, beauty, and shopping for a new generation” as they offer “the only 360-degree source for shopping, exclusive deals, trends, beauty news, local hot-spots, and at-home sneak-peeks of fashion’s finest.” That’s ridiculously ambitious, but the results so far indicate that they’re pretty much killing it.

It’s hard to be involved with social media without having heard Gary Vaynerchuk’s name. He made a name for himself with his daily wine video blog called Wine Library TV, and that led to his writing a best-selling book called Crush It!. He has consistently made social media work for him, which is why he started an agency called VaynerMedia to “help brands to best leverage online platforms to build engaged communities that support their online marketing endeavors.” There are a lot of buzzwords in there, but they’re at least put together in a way that makes sense. VaynerMedia is located in New York, NY, and I got the idea to feature them from a reader who landed a job there.

As I mentioned on Monday, I’m all about creative ways to find interesting companies that might be hiring (like looking at Halloween candy labels). Sometimes the ideas that I come up with are way out there, and sometimes they’re pretty simple. As I’ve randomly discovered more and more cool companies in my neighborhood, I’ve realized that walking around town and looking at the nameplates on buildings has to be worth trying. Though I’ve only done it casually so far, I think I probably would have come across Digital Kitchen more quickly if I had taken it a bit more seriously. They’re a Chicago, IL, Seattle, WA, and Los Angeles, CA based company that takes part in “creative mischief for progressive brands and entertainment properties.” In other words they’re a creative agency that has domes some pretty cool work for some pretty big names.

Now that I’ve lived in Chicago for three years, I’m starting to feel more like a part of the Chicago business community. And a big piece of being a part of a community is keeping up on your local news. I rely a lot of sources, but I’ve found that Crain’s Chicago Business consistently does great reporting on the Chicago business scene. Crain’s Chicago Business is published by Crain Communications, which is “one of the largest privately owned business publishers in the U.S., with more than 27 leading business, trade and consumer publications and related websites in North America, Europe and Asia.” Crain is headquartered in Detroit, MI, but their publications are headquartered in a variety of places. Crain was founded in 1916 by GD Crain Jr., and it remains a family owned business to this day despite a few bumps in the road that would be expected for any company in the publishing industry (like layoffs a couple of years ago).

I’ve never stepped foot in a pawn shop, but I am hopelessly addicted to watching both Pawn Stars and Hardcore Pawn. The two shows offer diametrically opposed views of the pawn industry. The former is all about antiques and interesting merchandise, while the latter is more focused on the people who pawn everyday items. In case you didn’t know, pawn is one of the simplest forms of credit. You give a pawn broker an item to hold as collateral, and he or she gives you a loan based on the value of the item. To get the item back you have to pay back the principal plus interest within a certain amount of time, otherwise the pawn broker can keep the item and sell it. Pawn makes credit available to anyone who owns something of value, and that’s generally a good thing. The pawn model has been around for thousands of years, so it’s about time for someone to take it online. That’s what Denver, CO and Chicago, IL based Pawngo is doing, and they’re taking it one step further. Pawngo is solely focused on the high end of pawn, so they only do loans from $250 to $100,000 (though you might be able to convince them to go higher if you have a really awesome item).

During high school I was inducted into The Société Honoraire de Français. Though I don’t remember it, I apparently recited, “L’homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux” (The man who knows two languages is worth two men). I guess that means I’m worth just barely more than a single man, because I never took a French class after the ceremony (mostly to avoid crazy French teachers). Since then I’ve traveled to places like Paris and Montreal, and a small part of me wishes I had kept up with the language so that I could better appreciate the culture. Life isn’t nearly as exciting with no new Harry Potter books or movies coming out. I’m pretty bummed about it, but probably not nearly as bummed as the people who hang out on MuggleNet. In case you’ve never heard of it, MuggleNet is “the world’s #1 Harry Potter site.” It was started by Emerson Spartz when he was 12 years old, and it quickly started generating a ton of traffic. And with that traffic came some serious revenue opportunities. As MuggleNet turned into a real business, Emerson rolled it into a company called Spartz Media and started launching new entertainment focused sites. Some of the bigger names include OMG Facts, Gives Me Hope, and SmartphOWNED. Spartz Media is located in Chicago, IL (about 3 blocks from me), and they’re reaching more than 8.5 million people every month through their web properties. They’ve been at it since 2009, though MuggleNet has actually been around since 1999.

In the good old days companies would print a 1-800 number on their products soliciting “Questions, Comments, and Concerns.” My guess is that they got a lot of calls from 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds, and not many from people in between. This was ok for a long time, but brands are slowly coming around to the idea that interacting with their customers is probably a good thing. Social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook are helping, but most brands still use them to push information instead of engaging with consumers. If my parents had to pinpoint the time when they hated me the most, it was probably one of the times they took my sister and me furniture shopping. It was always an unmitigated disaster. When I’m in a furniture store, it’s like I’m wearing a Horcrux (Harry Potter reference for those who have no idea what I’m talking about) around my neck. I have to admit that it gets a bit monotonous writing about non-profit jobs every weekend. There’s an endless number of organizations to cover, but so many of them are very similar to ones that I’ve already featured. But today I found one that is about as unique a non-profit as I’ve come across in my nearly four years of doing this. It’s the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, GA. They’re exactly what they sound like, an organization that “is the largest American organization solely dedicated to the art of puppet theater.” I’ll admit that I haven’t been to a puppet show in a while, but when I was a little kid I put on a mean one. Puppetry is an interesting art because it can be as simple as a sock on a hand or as complex as Big Bird. It may not get as much credit as other performing arts, but it’s definitely worthy of having an organization devoted to it.

When I land on a company’s website, I have a semi-routine. I check out the About page, the Careers page, and try to dig into what the company does and what they’re about. When I landed on the site for Empathy Lab, I was thrown off my routine. They have a huge image with a headline that links to a blog post about buying tennis shoes front and center on their home page. This may seem an odd choice for an advertising and marketing agency, but it works. It instantly frames the Conshohocken, PA based firm as a group of innovative thinkers, which is exactly what you want from a company that aims to “create strategies, experiences and programs for companies seeking success in the digital landscape.” That’s why I’m not surprised that they made the Inc. 5000 with 201% three-year growth to $11.5 million in annual revenue.

Yesterday we looked at Niner Bikes and how they’ve carved out a really nice niche in the outdoor action sports market by building mountain bikes with bigger wheel bases. Today we’re going to look at a company that has built a much bigger business in the same market by offering products that you may not initially associate with the market. Skullcandy is a Park City, UT based company that “markets high-end headphones, earphones, hands free devices, audio backpacks, MP3 players and other audio enabled lifestyle products.” They target consumers who associate with sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, and mountain biking, so they’ve been able to build a really strong brand identity that has fueled some serious growth. Skullcandy was founded in 2003, and they made the Inc. 5000 this year with 354% three-year growth to $160.6 million in annual revenue. In fact, the growth has been so great that Skullcandy had an IPO earlier this year.

I get the dirtiest looks when I tell people that I don’t enjoy riding bikes. It’s as if I hate puppies and babies and unicorns. But if I did like biking, I’d probably enjoy mountain biking the most. And if I was to go mountain biking, I’d probably want a bike with control and stability. That’s exactly what Niner Bikes offers. They build bikes with 29-inch diameter wheels, which are bigger than the wheels on most other mountain bikes. Why? Rotational inertia. It’s not often that you see 25-year old companies on the Inc. 5000, but that’s exactly what ShopAtHome.com is. They got their start as a husband and wife team, and they’ve growing consistently since 1986. It seems that the growth has accelerated over the past few years, as ShopAtHome.com, which is based in Greenwood Village, CO, has a 442% three-year growth rate and generated $35.4 million in revenue last year. Now, ShopAtHome.com isn’t really what it sounds like. It’s not an online version of QVC. It’s a coupons site; in fact, it’s “one of the largest websites offering free online coupons, grocery coupons, cash back rewards, free samples, restaurant coupons and contests.” Their site had 37 million visits last year, which is a staggering number. What’s even more staggering is that they appear to have generated about $1 in revenue for every visitor.

Yesterday we looked at an advertising agency in Iowa; today we’re looking at digital marketing agency in New York, NY. Even though they’re in very similar businesses, you’d think that they wouldn’t have much in common. Yet when you look at their growth rates, annual revenue, and number of employees, EdgeCore and CreativeFeed (507% three-year growth rate to $5.3 million in revenue) look a lot alike. I think that’s pretty cool, even if it’s not all that meaningful. CreativeFeed catches your eye immediately when you land on their site. Not only do they offer a beautiful design, but they instantly catch your attention with the phrase “Welcome to The Currency Factory.” I don’t know about you, but I really want to know what that means. Apparently it’s “a new form of communication… designed to resonate with the social, conversational and digital reality.” As I understand it, Currency is attention, and attention, much like currency, is something that brands need to be profitable.

A couple of days ago I mentioned how much I love the diversity of companies that I find on the Inc. 5000 list. The best part of that is the geographic heterogeneity. It’s extremely difficult to learn about interesting companies that aren’t in major population centers. It’s partly because there aren’t nearly as many of them, but it’s also because successful companies in smaller cities don’t usually get a ton of media attention outside of their own market. Luckily there are some exceptions like the Inc. 5000, which is where I found out about EdgeCore. They’re a Cedar Falls, IA based “advertising agency that specializes in the strategic development of creative concepts and integrated branding and promotional campaigns for clients nationwide.” They may be located in a small city, but they’re still the 614th fastest growing private company in the U.S. with 527% three-year growth to $5.5 million in revenue.

I spend a ton of time outdoors between fly fishing and playing beach volleyball. You’d think I’d have a cooler to take along with me, but I don’t. You may think it’s cooler overkill, but the market for high quality coolers seems to be extremely strong. That’s why Yeti Coolers made the Inc. 5000 with 613% three-year growth to $13 million in revenue.

The thing that I love most about the Inc. 5000 is the diversity of the companies. While there are definitely some strong themes throughout the list, there are companies doing all kinds of things in all kinds of places–and succeeding. One of the biggest themes on the list is that online marketing is offering massive opportunity to new companies. One Click Ventures is a Greenwood, IN based company that is big on Internet marketing. Unlike many of the other companies on the list, they do the marketing for themselves, not for clients. One Click Ventures runs a number of e-commerce properties including ABC Neckties, Affordable Scarves, Handbag Heaven, Inexpensive Watches, Reading Glasses Shopper, TravelProducts.com, Socks4Life, and Sunglass Warehouse. Each of these sites is in a very competitive niche, so it should be no surprise that One Click Ventures claims to have a distinct competitive advantage with their “marketing engine” that “consists of a diverse team of subject matter experts, including SEO, PPC, email marketing, social media, affiliate marketing, conversion optimization and content development.”

The fun thing about going through the Inc. 5000 looking for companies that offer interesting entry level jobs is that the list just keeps getting better as you move down the rankings. The companies may be growing a little more slowly than those at the top, but it’s often because they’ve reached a size where quadruple-digit growth is nearly impossible (so they have to settle for triple-digit growth). One company that has grown large quickly is Levelwing. They’re a full-service digital advertising agency based in New York, NY and Charleston, SC. Their big focus is on making data-driven decisions and using technology to measure the effectiveness of their work on a constant basis. They’ve grown at a 720% rate over the past three years, which brought them to $44.8 million in revenue last year.

A few weeks ago I told you about a company called Sixthman that gets together groups of music fans and puts them on a cruise ship with their favorite artists. It’s a pretty cool idea that is making a bunch of money (even if it doesn’t sound like my kind of fun). Ludus Tours is another company that organizes group vacations, but they are focus on taking people to specific destinations for specific events. Their main focus is on sporting events like The Olympics, The World Cup, The Master’s, The Super Bowl, and other big events that are preceded with a “The.” However, they have branched out to do other types of trips like Oktoberfest in Munich, Carnaval in Rio, and The Running of the Bulls. They cover all the bases including travel, accommodations, tickets, and all of the other logistics involved with trips like these. San Diego, CA based Ludus Tours serves both individuals and groups, so you can book a tour for yourself or organize a group excursion. They must do a good job considering they’ve seen 1,253% three-year growth to $2.5 million in revenue.

When I look at creative, marketing, or design agencies, I usually like to check out their client lists and their work. I’m no expert, but it gives me a much better feel for the company. That’s why I was a bit surprised when I came across Phenomenon on the Inc. 5000–they don’t disclose their work or their clients. In fact, they promise anonymity to their sixteen clients (one of which is a country), and they mostly take on new clients who are referred to them by current or past clients. Phenomenon is based in Los Angeles, CA, and their approach is definitely different, but it does seem to be working. They’re growing like crazy with 1,274% three-year revenue growth to $15 million.

It’s been a while since I did a survey of One Day, One Job readers. There’s really no excuse for that considering how useful survey data can be and how easy it is to run a survey online. (So watch out for a survey sometime in the next month or two.) When I see online surveys, they’re usually run on SurveyMonkey or Google Docs, but I’ve also seen a few surveys driven by SurveyGizmo. They’re based in Boulder, CO, and they offer “a web-based software company giving researchers, and small and enterprise companies powerful tools to create online surveys, questionnaires and forms – allowing capture and analysis of virtually any type of data essential for business.” It’s working for them. SurveyGizmo came in at #144 on the Inc. 5000 with 1,940% three-year growth to $3.3 million in revenue.

You may wonder how a site that is focused on serving people who self-identify as being cheap makes money, but there’s no question that doesn’t seem to be a problem for Savings.com considering that they made the Inc. 5000 with 2,077% three-year growth to $19.9 million in revenue.
