I’ve made a point of being more active in Cornell’s entrepreneurship community, so I like to think that I do a good job of keeping tabs on which other companies have been started by fellow alums. That’s why I was shocked to learn that the #2 online retailer of home furnishings and housewares was not only a company that I’d never heard of before, but a company founded by two Cornell grads. It’s called Wayfair–they’re based in Boston, MA and did $500 million in sales last year. The reason I hadn’t heard of them is that they were known as CSN Stores until last year (they were founded in 2002). CSN Stores was focused on building out 200+ product specific properties with generic domain names like Bedroomfurniture.com, Cookware.com, AirHockeyTables.com, and AllBarstools.com. Last year they decided to get serious about branding and started pulling all of their sites into the Wayfair brand.

Find Your Way

If you’d like to read a more in-depth version of the Wayfair story, check out this write up from GigaOm. It provides a lot of interesting details, but I actually think the Wayfair site is even better. Their About page is beautifully designed and packed with information, and the same can be said for the company’s Careers page. It’s also nice that they have a Campus Recruiting section that includes this video (you may need to click through to view it):

The campus recruiting page also includes four positions targeted towards 2012 grads: Business Analyst, Business Intelligence Analyst, Category Management Associate, and Software Engineer. Additionally, they have a ton of job postings for immediate hire:

Category Analyst / Entry Level Buyer (Sydney, Australia)

Jr. Designer/Web Production Artist

Customer Service Consultant (Sydney, Australia)

Bilingual Sales & Service Consultant (Galway, Ireland)

Analyst, Email Marketing – Private Sale

There are a ton of great opportunities at Wayfair, which was named one of Glassdoor’s 2012 Best Places to Work, so browse through the postings and see if any of them are appropriate for you.

There’s a reason that web startups with no semblance of a business plan but heaps of traffic continue to get venture capital funding. Consistently driving high quality traffic to a web property is extremely difficult, and almost all businesses need attention to succeed. Quality content is the cornerstone of driving traffic (that’s why I looked for writers when I was hiring interns), and content generation is not a core competency for most businesses. It is for Brafton. They’re a Boston, MA based “online news and content agency that offers integrated content marketing services.” They don’t brag about who their clients are like some other types of agencies (you can request live client samples), which makes sense since clients typically want people to think the content is coming straight from them.

Be Content at Brafton

I doubt any writers from Brafton will be winning Pulitzer Prizes, but I’m sure that’s ok with them. Their goal is to help their clients reach more customers by developing content that grabs attention and performs well on search engines and in social media. Brafton has a section of their website that is devoted to their business model, so I highly recommend that you read through that–including their case study–so that you can get a better sense of how they operate. They also provide information on their different teams, so you’ll probably want to read up on Account Management, Content Writing, and Social and E-mail. If you’d like to join one of those teams, you’re in luck because Brafton’s Careers page shows a ton of entry level opportunities. These include:

Graphic Resource Coordinator (Boston, MA)

Blog and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Market Research Executive (Boston, MA)

German News and Content Writer (Remote)

News and Content Writer (Chicago, IL)

Inside Sales Representative (Boston, MA)

News and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Jr. Web Developer (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Scottsdale, AZ)

Content Marketing Specialist (San Francisco, CA)

You won’t be writing the next great novel at Brafton, but I’m sure you’ll learn a ton about developing content for the Internet with a focus on ROI. That’s insanely valuable these days.

E-mail is supposed to be simple: you send a message and the recipient gets it nearly instantly. That’s the way it usually works for most people, but there are those rare instances where a message gets caught in a spam folder or bounces back to the sender. Those problems get much bigger when you start to send a lot of e-mail; in fact, I recently had to deal with an issue that resulted in some of our daily e-mails that were sent on a Friday being received the following Wednesday. Because I send nearly 400,000 e-mails a month, I use one of the top providers in the business, and this still happened. E-mail is a complicated beast, which is why companies that send multiple orders of magnitude more e-mail than I do need help to overcome the fact that “20% of emails sent by web applications either go missing or they get caught by spam filters.” SendGrid is a Boulder, CO based company that specializes in e-mail delivery. They’ve delivered more than 20 billion e-mails for clients that include Foursquare, SlideShare, and GetSatisfaction, so I think they must do a lot better than 80%.

Get in the Grid

While many e-mail providers focus almost entirely on newsletters and marketing-type e-mails, SendGrid can deliver pretty much any kind of e-mail it needs to. Businesses plug their web applications into SendGrid using APIs, and they can send to both individuals (think receipts, notifications, etc) or to a larger group. SendGrid runs the mail servers so that their clients don’t need an individual or team devoted to e-mail delivery. It’s a big win for businesses who need near flawless e-mail delivery but want to stay focused on doing the things that are core to their business. I know all of the e-mail technical talk can be a little overwhelming, but there’s a good mix of technical and non-technical jobs at SendGrid. Their Jobs page shows that they’re looking for an Account Receivables Specialist, a Technical Support Representative, a Quality Assurance Engineer (Anaheim, CA), Content Writer (Anaheim, CA) and a Web Engineer.

Want to check out Fab.com and get daily design deals up to 70% off? Get your free invite here, and hurry. If you sign up before 11:45 AM EDT on 10/18/2011, you’ll get $10 in your account as soon as you sign up.

If my parents had to pinpoint the time when they hated me the most, it was probably one of the times they took my sister and me furniture shopping. It was always an unmitigated disaster. When I’m in a furniture store, it’s like I’m wearing a Horcrux (Harry Potter reference for those who have no idea what I’m talking about) around my neck. My irritability and immaturity increase at an exponential rate over time. My girlfriend, having had heard the stories, came up with a smart solution when we were buying stuff for our new place. Instead of dragging me along from store to store, she did some pre-shopping and then only showed me the stuff she absolutely loved. It worked perfectly, as I was in and out of the stores before I even had the chance to start acting like a hungry, tired three-year old. Now we’ve come up with an even better solution–she just sends me links to Fab.com. It’s a New York, NY based site and company that offers “daily design for everyone.” They’re relatively new on the scene, but they’ve been getting a ton of positive attention by offering amazing deals of up to 70% on all kinds of cool stuff for your home.

Are You Fab?

Much like Gilt Groupe and ideeli, Fab.com requires you to be invited to get access to their daily deals. Luckily, I’ve got the hookup and you can get an invite here (and if you sign up before 11:45 AM Eastern on 10/18/2011, you get $10 in your account for free). If you really want to get a feel for the site, you should sign up, but the other option is to read the Fab.com Buzz to get some (presumably favorable) third-party opinions. Beyond paying insanely close attention to design in both the products they sell and their user experience, Fab.com also has designed their customer service function to be exceptional. If you like what you’re hearing about Fab.com, then you’ll want to check out their job postings. They don’t have their own Jobs page, so they link straight to their postings on LinkedIn. There are a few postings, but the only one that is presumably entry level is Copywriter (their CEO actually posts the positions on LinkedIn). I did a little digging and found some more postings on our job search engine including positions like Customer Support Representative and Supplier Relations Coordinator. And if none of those positions look like a good fit, you can also check out Fab.com’s Team page to see what other types of careers are possible with Fab.com.

When you’re young your biggest responsibility is taking care of yourself. But eventually you get a dog, buy a house, have kids, and even have to start caring for your aging parents. As the responsibilities pile up, many people have to seek professional help to handle it all. I’m not talking about mental health professionals–I’m talking about babysitters, nannies, dog walkers, senior caregivers, and other people who can take on some of your daily responsibilities. Care.com is a Waltham, MA based company that makes “it easier for families to find reliable, trustworthy care for their loved ones.” Care.com does this by providing a closed community for matching up caregivers with people who are looking to hire them. By keeping the community closed, Care.com is able to ensure quality with features like background checks, reviews, and reference.

Show That You Care

The biggest impediment to finding a caregiver is trust. Whether you’re looking for someone to bring in your mail or babysit your first born, you don’t want to have any doubts about the person that you hire. Usually people use their real world social networks to find people for these jobs, but where do you go if you can’t find anyone you already know? Care.com wants to be that place. By combining an easy to use online experience with a team of experts, Care.com has positioned itself as the place to go to find caregivers or caregiving jobs. From what I can tell, Care.com is growing at a really good rate and they’re extremely well funded by venture capitalists. That must be why Care.com’s Jobs page has so many opportunities posted. The jobs that look like they might be good fits for new or recent grads include Data Analyst, E-mail Producer, Inside Sales Representative, Marketing Associate, Member Care Call Center Representative, Online Marketing Analyst, Operations Analyst, and Software Engineer. These look like really cool opportunities, so don’t pass them up.

A few weeks ago in my post on SailThru, I urged you to consider e-mail marketing as a career option. It’s a field that provides an immense amount of value to businesses, yet it gets far too little attention–especially from college students and grads. One of the keys to doing well with e-mail marketing is finding great tools to use. I use Aweber to deliver our daily e-mails, but I’m constantly tempted to switch over to MailChimp. They’re an Atlanta, GA company that is growing at an insane rate. They offer a platform for e-mail marketing that just keeps on getting better for a user base that is climbing towards 1 million. MailChimp’s attention to design and detail has made them a standout in a space that is getting more and more crowded. Every day I seem to notice that another e-mail newsletter that I’m subscribed to has moved over to MailChimp.

Start Chimping Around

One of the best ways to understand how MailChimp serves their clients is to read through some of their Customer Stories. You’ll learn all about what MailChimp offers and how companies are using these services to build better businesses. You can even set up a free MailChimp account and use it to start learning a little bit about e-mail marketing. MailChimp is so product-focused that learning about their product is the best way to learn about their company–though they do seem to have a pretty sweet culture too (you can just feel it on their website). Additionally, MailChimp has one of, if not the best Jobs page that I’ve ever seen. It’s simple, clear, and beautiful. It also has a bunch of jobs that seem perfect for new or recent grads including Compliance Geek, Tech-support Geek, Multilingual Tech-support Geeks (Spanish, French, Portuguese, German or Dutch), Infrastructure Engineer, PHP Developer, IT Human, Zookeeper (Office Manager), and Web Analyst. These look like awesome jobs, so check them out–even if it’s just so that you can experience a Jobs page that isn’t completely frustrating to use.

As you can probably tell, I’m extremely bullish on e-mail as a communication platform. I still think it’s the best way to reach people electronically, and I don’t think that’s going to change anytime soon. That’s why I’ve built One Day, One Job and One Day, One Internship as daily e-mails and will continue to do so. In the past we’ve profiled careers at a bunch of companies in the e-mail industry. We’ve looked at e-mail service providers like Aweber (the one we use), Constant Contact, e-Dialog, ExactTarget, iContact, and Return Path, and we’ve also looked at daily e-mail businesses like Thrillist, DailyLit, DailyCandy, The Daily Beast, Prime Publishing, TastingTable, and UrbanDaddy. E-mail is a massive, growing industry, yet you never hear any college students say that they want to go into the e-mail business when they graduate. I really hope that changes. Anyway, I got an e-mail from a former reader who is now working at Sailthru. I’d heard of them before, but she let me know that they have a bunch of job openings. Sailthru is based in New York, NY, and they started as a simple e-mail service provider that would send transactional e-mails like welcome e-mails and receipts; however, they quickly moved into much more interesting stuff. Sailthru now has a platform called Horizon that enables them “to deliver enhanced psychographic information to clients and radically personalized communications to each of their users.” I get a lot of readers asking for personalization–maybe one day Sailthru will help me deliver it.

Set Your Sails for Sailthru

As I pointed out, there are a ton of e-mail service providers out there. It can be hard to tell which ones are really leading the industry. It’s pretty clear that Sailthru has already made a name for itself considering that they can claim names like Aol and The Huffington Post, CollegeHumor, Thrillist, and Flavorpill as clients. Sailthru’s Solutions offer all of the normal things that you’d expect from an e-mail provider–exceptional delivery (since ensuring that subscribers actually get your e-mails is the most important thing), in-depth analytics, great customer service, etc. But what makes them really stand out is their behavioral targeting technology. This kind of stuff is pretty common on the web, but doing it with e-mail lists is pretty innovative. If I’ve convinced you that going into the e-mail business is a good idea, you should definitely take a look at jobs at Sailthru. They have a number of interesting jobs posted, and the ones that seem most suitable for new or recent grads are Account Manager and Developer.

There’s only one thing more annoying than getting spam in your inbox—getting real messages sent to your spam box. Unfortunately, because spam is such a problem, ISPs are extremely strict about which e-mail messages get through spam filters. This can sometimes be a problem when you’re sending e-mail individually, but it becomes a much bigger problem when you’re sending bulk. Whether you’re sending hundreds of thousands of messages a month like I am or billions of messages a month like Facebook does, you have to ensure that your e-mails get to your users inboxes. It’s a complicated science, but there are companies that specialize in e-mail deliverability. One of—if not the biggest name in the industry is Return Path. They’re headquartered in New York, NY with major offices in Broomfield, CO and Sunnyvale, CA, and they’re experts on all of the issues surrounding e-mail deliverability and spam detection.

A Return Path for Your Career

If you’re sending e-mails, Return Path can help you make sure that your e-mails get through to the inbox. If you’re an ISP that is trying to filter out spam, Return Path can help you better identify the good messages from the bad. As I see it, if a few spam messages get through to me, it’s fine. But if I miss out on an important e-mail because of someone else’s filtering software, that’s unacceptable. Return Path is constantly working to make sure that e-mail remains a viable platform for trusted communication. If you’re still not quite getting what e-mail deliverability is all about, you can read up on Return Path’s Research and take a look at some of their Client Case Studies. If you like what you see, then you should check out Return Path’s Careers page. They have quite a few positions posted, and a few look suitable for new grads including Business Intelligence Coordinator (New York, NY), Account Coordinator (Broomfield, CO), Application Support Analyst (Broomfield, CO), and Desktop Support Analyst (Broomfield, CO).
You love free daily e-mails. Obviously. We’ve covered a lot of companies whose main products are daily e-mails, and not so surprisingly, most of the businesses are focused on helping you find new places to spend your money—these include DailyCandy, Thrillist, and TastingTable. Then there are the ones that make you smarter like The Daily Beast, DailyLit, and the one you’re reading right now (the one that is also trying to help you grow your bank account). UrbanDaddy definitely falls into the former category. They dub themselves “the free daily email devoted to bringing you the single thing you need to know every day about your city.” They’re based in New York, NY, but their daily editions cover Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, DC, Jetset, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, National, New York, San Francisco, and Ski & Board. Each edition covers topics like Nightlife, Food, Style, Gear, Leisure, and Weekends—all things that you should be withholding from yourself until you get a job (just kidding).

Who’s Your UrbanDaddy?

For all the hype that social media and social networking sites get, it’s amazing how many businesses are built on good, old-fashioned e-mail lists. UrbanDaddy has a cadre of writers who know the cities they cover and have an exceptional skill for uncovering what’s cool and new. If you live in a city covered by UrbanDaddy, you’ll never really have an excuse to be bored. They’re aiming to be that friend—the one “who knows everyone—the maitre d’s at all the right restaurants, the bouncers at all the right clubs, the addresses of all the great parties. And the kind of guy who lives to share the wealth.” They even have a Perks Program that gives subscribers exclusive access to special deals (hey, everyone has to jump on the Groupon bandwagon—it’s too profitable not to). If you are that friend, or you’ve played a supporting role to that friend, then you need to check out jobs at UrbanDaddy. They have a number of great opportunities posted right now, and a few look suitable for new or recent grads including Copy Editor, Los Angeles Editor, Senior Writer (yeah, I know it says Senior, but why not try to wow them), Quality Assurance Analyst, Advertising Sales Planner, Interactive Designer, and Senior LAMP/Front-End Engineer. Check out the job descriptions and sign up for UrbanDaddy’s daily e-mails to see if you’ll be a good fit.

Since it’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, you may want to check out our post on The King Center from 2009. It also happens to be my anniversary with my girlfriend, which means that we’ll be going to a fancy dinner tonight. I try to stay up on the Chicago food scene as much as I can, and one way that I used to do that was by subscribing to TastingTable (though I must admit that I eventually unsubscribed even though the e-mails are really good). They send “a free daily email that delivers the best of food and drink culture to adventurous eaters everywhere.” The company is based in New York, NY, and beyond their national e-mail list, they also offer e-mail lists for New York City, New York Specials, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Chef’s Recipes with lists for Boston, Philadelphia, and Portland coming soon. In the national e-mail they send “one delicious idea about dining, wine, cocktails, cooking or restaurant personalities” every day, while in their local editions they’ll “alert you to a must-try dish at a forgotten restaurant, a hot new bar that deserves its buzz, under-appreciated cook shops and neighborhood food purveyors who may otherwise go unnoticed.”

A Tasteful Career Choice

I don’t know about the rest of you, but college was when I really started to appreciate decent food. After a couple of years of dining hall food (even at Cornell where it’s supposed to be good), pizza, wings, and other college staples, I started cooking on my own and trying some of the ethnic restaurants that I was previously too scared to try. I even found an online guide that gave me the inside scoop on Ithaca’s food scene. Since there has been a huge upswing in the amount of foodie-focused online media. TastingTable is a perfect example. They provide quality content for a very specific audience, and they’re able to monetize that content with ads targeted to a food-loving audience. (I know a lot about this business model.) You also have to like that Bob Pittman, “most successful investor in newsletter space,” is one of TastingTable’s backers (he also backed DailyCandy and Thrillist). If you like what you see at TastingTable, check out their Jobs page, which doesn’t seem to be linked from anywhere on their site. Right now they have a number of open positions that could be good fits for new grads including Editor, Food Editor, and Sales Account Manager. Don’t be scared off by the titles, the experience requirements are lower than you might expect. Right now all of the job seem to be based in NYC, but I imagine that they also sometimes have opportunities in their other cities.

Since the deal above is for the guys (or girls who are buying gifts for their guys), we might as well take a look at a company that is a bit more targeted to the girls. And since it’s Cyber Monday, it only makes sense to focus on something that’s e-commerce related. That’s why we’re taking a look at Prospectiv. They’re a Wakefield, MA based company that specializes in “connecting brands with customers,” and they do that with a strong focus on customers who also happen to be women. Prospectiv’s specialty is online performance marketing, so they’re primed for even more success moving forward. Currently they’re generating “more than 50 million pre-qualified leads per year on a pay-for-results basis for clients, including many Fortune 1000 companies such as Procter and Gamble, Wal-Mart, Pfizer, Disney, Nestle and Schering-Plough.” That’s an amazing number, and I bet it’s only going to go up.

A New Prospectiv

Prospectiv is already working with the biggest names in the world, so they’re well positioned to take advantage of the inevitable growth in performance marketing. They’re also in good shape because they offer both Advertiser Solutions and Publisher Solutions; in fact, they’re even paying attention to the consumer side as well. To get a feel for the kind of marketing that Prospectiv does, you should really browse through their case studies. It will really help you to understand their flavor of performance marketing. Once you’ve done that, then you should take a look at Prospectiv’s Careers page. They have a variety of entry level opportunities including Copywriter, E-mail Marketing Associate, Inside Online Advertising Sales, Inside Sales Professional, Operations Associate, Software Engineer, and Business Development/Publisher Recruitment (New York, NY). There are some great options, so check them out.

One of the fun things about researching companies every day is that sometimes I get to learn more about my neighbors. If I hadn’t been cruising through the Inc 500, I probably never would have taken a second look at the building just a block from me, which I can see right now out my office window. However, it happens to house Rise Interactive, a Chicago, IL based “full-service Internet marketing company” that services “companies of all sizes, from startups to the Fortune 500.” They’ve seen 658% growth over the past three, and that led them to $2.6 million in annual revenue last year. Their site isn’t as flashy as many of the interactive agencies that we’ve featured in the past, but that makes sense when you look at the services that they offer—they seem much more focused on results-based areas like SEO, Paid Search, Display Advertising, and Affiliate Marketing.

When Do You Rise?

I’m really interested by the kind of work Rise Interactive does because a lot of it overlaps with what I do to run my sites. If you take a look at Rise Interactive’s Client List, you’ll see that they work with a mix of familiar names and more recent upstarts. If you want to dig even deeper, you can read their Client Testimonials and take a look at their Client Case Studies. If you have never considered a career in online marketing before, it’s definitely worth thinking about—especially because people from a variety of academic backgrounds can thrive in the industry. If you want to learn a little more, you can take a look at the Online Marketing Resources that Rise Interactive provides, then you can check out their Job page or their specific Jobs page for new grads. You can apply for a specific position like Internet Marketing Consultant, or you can just apply generally.

Believe it or not, we’ve actually covered a fair number of entry level employers in Utah, but I think today’s company might have the most personality of them so far. Neutron Interactive is a Salt Lake City based interactive agency that is taking online business to the next level. Neutron Interactive is an Inc 500 company that has grown 812% over the past three years. Their annual revenue was $9.5 million last year, so they’re quite big when compared to many of the other interactive agencies that also made the list.

What Do You Know About Neutrons?

Unfortunately, Neutron Interactive doesn’t seem to show off any of their work on their website, but they do have a list of things that they do “ridiculously well,” which include: Affiliate Marketing, Banner/Media Marketing, Social Media, Creative, Email Marketing, Recruitment Marketing, Internet Marketing, Interactive PR, Leads & Lead Scoring, PPC Management, Product Development, Proprietary Technology, Search Engine Optimization, Web Analytics, Web Design & Consultation, and Conversion Optimization. Neutron Interactive is also big on showing off their culture and their team. That means that you can get a good, inside look at what it might be like to work there just by browsing their website. If you’re excited about what you see, you’ll obviously want to check out the Neutron Interactive Jobs page. They have 7 positions posted right now, and a few seem well suited for new or recent grads. These include Junior Software Developer and The Ultimate Marketing Specialist. The other positions require a little bit more experience, but you may want to check them out too. They also offer the option to submit a general job application.

When you send an e-mail to a friend, you just assume that they will get it. If they claim they never saw it, you probably have a friend who is ignoring you. But if you’re like me and running a business that relies on sending a quarter of a million e-mails per month, then e-mail delivery is a slightly bigger issue. It’s not something that you can just do from Gmail or whatever e-mail provider you use. You need a paid provider that specializes in delivering e-mails for business. We’ve already looked at jobs at companies like Aweber, Constant Contact, E-Dialog, and ExactTarget, but today we’re going to look at Durham, NC based iContact. Once again they’re an Inc 500 company, and they have seen 848% three-year growth to $26.5 million in revenue. They’ve done it all by offering a simple e-mail marketing solution that allows businesses to reach their customers’ inboxes.

iContact Them for a Job

A lot of people think that social networking is replacing e-mail, but it’s just not true. I find that when I send people Facebook messages it’s not nearly as likely to receive a response as a simple e-mail. There’s a reason that I’ve built much of my business on having an e-mail list—it’s a great way to keep people engaged. Just think about Groupon and Gilt Groupe—they’ve built huge businesses really quickly by leveraging e-mail effectively. If you want to get into the e-mail game, then you should check out jobs at iContact. They have a ton of job openings, and a few seem right for new or recent grads including iContact Labs Software Architect, Associate – Business/Finance Analysis, Small Business Sales Representative, Pre-Sales Representative, Partner Development Specialist, Administrative Assistant – Sales Department, Outbound Lead Generation Rep, Pay-Per-Click (Paid Search) Analyst, and Corporate/Business Strategy Associate. There are lots of options, so check them out and see what gets you excited.

Usually when a company has a weird name and no website of their own, you start to think that they may be some kind of entry level scam. Not having a home page for you company is a big warning sign; however, I’m not too worried about Quidsi. They’re a Jersey City, NJ company that made it to the Inc. 500 with 1535% three-year growth to $182.5 million in annual revenue. That’s two orders of magnitude great than most of the other Inc. 500 companies we’ve looked at. As far as I can tell, it’s all coming from two businesses—Diapers.com and Soap.com. Both are retail sites that allow you to buy household goods easily online. Although I’m sure there are a lot of other reasons for their success, you have to think that Quidsi has truly reaped the benefits of owning some top notch domain names.

Change Diapers and Wash Your Hands

Diapers and soap obviously aren’t the most exciting things, but a lot of people need them. A lot. If you want to order either online, you’re likely to type the word in to Google and see what comes up. Diapers.com and Soap.com rank extremely well in Google, so they get a ton of sales. Soap.com was actually launched only a few months ago, and it already looks like it’s doing well. The lesson you can learn from Quidsi is that businesses can do extremely well by carving out a small niche and owning it. Amazon.com may sell everything, but Quidsi can compete by being laser focused on a few product categories. If you’re interested by Quidsi’s approach, you can check out their Jobs page on Diapers.com (Soap.com has the same jobs listed). They have quite a few opportunities posted, and the following seem suitable for new or recent grads (not all are entry level, but they’re still worth looking at): Contracts Administrator – Merchandising, Soap.com Copywriter, Marketing Copywriter, Customer Care Representative, E-Commere Product Manager, Diapers.com E-mail Marketing Manager, E-Commerce Graphic Designer, Merchandising Assistant, SEM Manager, SQL Programmer, Social Media Community Manager, Interaction Designer, and UX Designer. They have lots of cool opportunities, so check them out.

There is one, and only one, One Day, One Job t-shirt. It came free with the business cards that I ordered from VistaPrint (see VistaPrint’s entry level jobs). I usually wear it to the gym or to play volleyball, and, unfortunately, nobody who recognized the logo has ever stopped me to tell me how awesome my site is. That’s why there won’t be any more One Day, One Job t-shirts (unless more than 100 of you e-mail me and tell me that you want one). But if I was going to give you the option to buy all kinds of One Day, One Job gear, I’d probably use CafePress. They’re a San Mateo, CA based company that allows you to customize nearly any piece of merchandise—t-shirts, bumper stickers, mugs, underwear, pillows, and even Flip cameras. Webmasters have been using CafePress forever to sell custom merchandise, and from what I can tell CafePress’ quality continues to get better.

Impress at CafePress

Want the CafePress story? Just watch the video below, it will give you the whole rundown of how they got started and what they’re all about.

CafePress has “a community of 6.5 million users, and over 11 million unique visits each month,” which makes them the “world’s largest collection of user-designed products.” Every day 2,000 new shops open up on CafePress and 45,000 new products are added to the catalog of more than 250 million unique products. If those numbers get you excited, then you may want to check out jobs at CafePress. Right now they have openings suitable for new grads like E-mail Marketing Coordinator, Retail Calendar Coordinator, and Sales Representative. You can apply online, and let me know if you would actually buy a t-shirt… or underwear with the ODOJ logo on it.

Despite all of the buzz about social media, I’m still convinced that e-mail is the most effective way to communicate with people online. Unfortunately, e-mail can become a headache very quickly. I probably get somewhere between 50 and 100 messages a day, and I sometimes find it overwhelming (but feel free to add to it if you have a question – willy@onedayonejob.com). I don’t know how people who get way more e-mail than I do are able to deal with it. There are lots of e-mail productivity tools, but most of them don’t work for me. I was starting to get desperate for a better way to manage relationships through e-mail, and then I came across Etacts. They’re a really young startup based in San Francisco, CA, and they built an e-mail tool that is exactly what I always wanted. I even went through the hassle of moving all of my accounts to Gmail just so that I could use Etacts. Their web-based software goes into your e-mail archive and pulls out a ton of data, then it gives you a simple interface where you can see things like who your top contacts are, how many messages you’ve traded with them, how long it’s been since you contacted them, and a few more simple features. You can even tie in your AT&T phone bill, although I haven’t figured out how to make that functionality work yet.

Grow Your Relationships

Etacts is so clutch for me. It helps me remember people that I’ve forgotten. I can follow up on conversations that I had six months or a year ago without having to dig through thousands of e-mails. That may mean scoring a new ad deal or getting a success story from a reader (send me your One Day, One Job success stories!). E-mail is the lifeblood of my business, and Etacts makes the data hidden in all of my e-mails much easier to digest. You can probably find some great uses for Etacts when it comes to managing your job search. It will help you remember which employers you need to follow up with, and it may help you rekindle some relationships that provide great networking opportunities. Etacts has built an amazing product, and it’s only in its infancy. They have a shot at being a really great company, and now that they have funding, they’re starting to hire. Right now all of their jobs are on the technical side—Startup Software Whiz, Hotshot UX Designer/Engineer, and Lead Engineer—but they also have a Community Manager Internship open which indicates that they may be hiring non-techies full-time in the not so distant future. Give Etacts a look and see if you can help them build an even better product.

Earlier this week we took a look at F+W Media, a company that is aggressively targeting niche media markets with books, magazines, trade shows, and digital products. Today we’re going to look at a company that is attacking similar niches, but strictly on the digital side. Prime Publishing is a Northbrook, IL based company that is, as they put it, “building the premiere woman’s lifestyle site on the Web.” I’m not sure I’d go that far, since businesses like DailyCandy and Gilt Groupe seem to be building pretty strong cases for themselves in that regard. Prime Publishing seems to be taking approach more like that of Demand Media. However, that doesn’t mean that Prime Publishing’s business isn’t interesting—”premiere” is just the wrong word. It’s quite obvious to me that their goal is to build easily monetizable digital properties, not to build an overarching woman’s lifestyle brand. When you take a look at their sites, you’ll see what I mean.

Prime or Choice?

Prime Publishing’s web properties include FaveCrafts.com, RecipeLion.com, AllFreeCrochet.com, FaveDiets.com, and quite a few more. If you visit each one, you’ll see that Prime Publishing has a formula for building profitable sites. They may not be taking an artistic approach, but it appears that they know how to make money from content (and that’s a REALLY important thing to learn these days). It’s the web version of direct marketing. I must admit that I was nervous about featuring Prime Publishing because their website looks similar to those of some entry level scam companies. It’s also a bit alarming that they don’t list the names of any of their employees or leadership on the site. With that said, I used LinkedIn to do some additional research and everything appears to check out. The jobs at Prime Publishing aren’t the glamorous Journalism jobs that you might have been dreaming about as a kid, but you will learn a hell of a lot from them about the intersection of marketing and content. Right now Prime Publishing’s Jobs page shows that they’re looking for both entry level and experienced Editors, so check out the job description and get ready to learn fast.

Product placement started out as a secret. Companies realized that they could pay to get their products featured in books, television shows, and movies, so they did. And we, the viewers, assumed that these products were included for editorial reasons. At some point we got smart and realized what was going on. It didn’t really change much, but we became a little more skeptical. Now product placement is assumed. If someone is promoting something, you take for granted that they’re getting paid for it. Delivery Agent is a San Franciso based company that realized this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. They’re taking product placement to the next level with a level of integration that we’ve never seen before. They call this “shopping-enabled entertainment.” When you see Dwight Schrute wearing a great looking shirt on The Office—ok, bad example—when you see a beautiful necklace on Gossip Girl, you can go to the show’s website and check out the “Seen On” section for more information how to buy the necklace. There’s also SeenON.com, which aggregates the information from all of Delivery Agent’s clients and makes it easy to “shop by show” or “shop by celeb.”

Become an Agent of Delivery

Delivery Agent is killing it right now. They currently monetize 90% of the Nielsen Primetime Top 50 Shows, and they just closed a $25 million round of financing. Their “Seen On” service is what has been driving most of the attention publicly, but they’re also doing some pretty cool stuff behind the scenes—they’re pushing to convince companies whose products are featured on tv to buy supporting advertising during the show. It’s a brilliant idea. The best part is that they’re already working with the most impressive names in entertainment, which is the biggest challenge a company like this has to overcome. When you can list ABC, CBS, NBC, MTV, FOX, and many more as partners, you’re in a great place to grow your business.

Even cooler is the fact that Delivery Agent has taken product placement and made it more results based than it has ever been before. They’ve also made everyone better off. Viewers can find the products they want. Media companies can more easily monetize their content. And companies with products increase their sales. I’m extremely high on Delivery Agent, and I strongly recommend that you check out their Jobs page. Right now they have quite a few jobs posted, but only a couple are suitable for new grads. These include E-mail Marketing Coordinator and M-Comm Site & Smart Phone App Developer (Contract). You can apply online, so get to it.

Once you start interviewing for jobs, you realize how important it is to stay well informed. Whether it’s staying up on the industry that you want to work in or just keeping up with current events, you need to be able to speak (somewhat) intelligently about a wide range of topics. Chit chat and small talk play a big part in the impression that you make, so don’t try to use the fact that you “live in a bubble” at college to explain away your ignorance. Instead, you should subscribe to the The Daily Beast. It’s a cheat sheet for current events that covers a wide array of topics. Some would call it a news aggregator, but they like calling what they do “curating.” The site was created by Tina Brown, who was formerly the editor at Vanity Fair and The New Yorker. The Daily Beast, which is based out of New York City, launched just over a year ago, and has been able to garner a huge amount of traffic pretty quickly. I guess it might have something to do with their IAC backing.

Beast on These Jobs

The way we consume news is changing, and The Daily Beast is a perfect example of how smart startups can create growth in what many people deem to be a dying industry. I could go into more detail about what The Daily Beast covers, but you’re better off just checking it out for yourself. After you give it a look, be sure to read their About page, which is really a Q & A with Tina Brown, the company’s founder. It will give you a lot of insight into what the company is all about. It’s an extremely entertaining Q&A, so I’m sure that you’ll like what you see. If that’s the case, then you’ll probably want to check out jobs at The Daily Beast. Their job listings are mixed in with the job postings from other IAC companies, but it’s a pretty easy list to scan through. (It’s pretty obvious that The Daily Beast is growing well judging by how much hiring they’re doing.) You’ll see a number of intriguing entry level positions including Business Analytics Manager, Graphic Designer, Assistant Video News Editor (West Hollywood, CA), Editorial Assistant, Social Media Associate, Sales Partnership Associate, Traffic Coordinator, and Web Developer.
I think that e-mail is still the king of social media. We have all of these fancy social networking accounts, but they all send their notifications to our inboxes. If you want someone’s attention, e-mail is the way to go (assuming your message doesn’t look like spam). Heck, you’re probably reading this in your e-mail. That’s why e-mail marketing continues to be a rapidly growing industry. We’ve already taken a look at jobs with Constant Contact, Aweber, and e-Dialog, and now we’re going to look at an industrial strength e-mail marketing company, ExactTarget. They’re based in Indianapolis, and since 2000 they’ve been focused on “providing the most powerful on-demand software for email communications and finding the best and brightest marketers on the planet to revolutionize the way people think about email.”

Target Your Job Search Exactly

ExactTarget offers a wide array of e-mail Products, Services, and Solutions that are used by clients like CarMax, Expedia, The Home Depot, and other huge brands. If you’d like to join ExactTarget at the forefront of e-mail marketing, then you should check out their entry level Catapult Rotational Program. Here’s an introductory video on the program (e-mail readers click through to watch):

If you like what you just saw, then there are two tracks that you can take. The ExactTarget Business Track will allow you to gain experience across departments like Marketing, Accounting, Solutions Consulting (SolCon), Account Management, Deliverability Services, Strategic Services, Training, SMB/Renewals, Partnerships, Human Resources, and Sales, while the ExactTarget Technical Track will have you working in Solutions Consulting (SolCon), Customer Support, Integration, Product, Quality Assurance, Deliverability Services, Training, Implementation, Design and Deployment. You may be able to meet up with ExactTarget recruiters on your campus, but if they’re not recruiting at your school you can get the run down on how to apply for the program here. ExactTarget has done a fantastic job with their entry level recruiting program, and I bet that reflects how much they value young talent.

Try 5 lessons from One Day, One Job’s Job Search Prep Course Found Your Career for free. It will help you get a job faster.

Nobody likes getting spam in their inbox, but a well-crafted, beautifully designed marketing message from one of your favorite brands isn’t always that bad—especially if it includes a special offer (kind of like the one above). We’ve already talked about Aweber and Constant Contact in terms of e-mail marketing, but today we’re going to talk about a company that does it on a much bigger scale. Burlington, MA based e-Dialog “is the proven provider of advanced e-mail marketing and database technologies, products, strategies, and services for permission-based e-mail marketers,” and they can back that up with a client list that includes the NFL, Nintendo, the NHL, OfficeMax, Harvard Business School Publishing, and many more serious brands.

Start an e-Dialog

E-mail marketing isn’t an easy business, but when you get it right, it’s a gold mine. There are companies who can send out a single e-mail to their list and instantly drive millions of dollars in revenue. I’m guessing those are the players that e-Dialog works with. Here are the 5 ways that e-Dialog helps their clients deliver an outstanding ROI:

1. Sophisticated yet easy to use tools for reporting, message deployment, segmentation, and analysis – considered some of the strongest and most comprehensive tools, as noted by Forrester Research
2. Proactive and reliable account management teams
3. Deliverability expertise, strong ISP relations, and a unique response management team that ensures all messages are properly responded to
4. Thought leadership on e-mail and multi-channel marketing strategies
5. Efficient integration of data from multiple sources and the ability to analyze that data and make it actionable

If you want to learn about the world of e-mail marketing, e-Dialog is a great place to do it. Right now they have 24 job openings in the US, and quite a few seem appropriate for new college grads. These include Receptionist, Software Engineer, and Technical Support Specialist. You can apply online, so head over to e-Dialog’s Jobs page to get all of the details.

Last week when I told you about Constant Contact, I mentioned how Jason Seiden and I are using a competing service to deliver e-mails about our job search prep course (if you’re struggling in your job search, you need to check this out – it will help). That service is called Aweber, and their CEO, Tom Kulzer, happened to stop by (yes, CEOs read One Day, One Job) to let us know that his company is also hiring. Since I think that companies with great products and awesome customer service usually make the best places to work, I’m pretty sure that Aweber, which is based in Newton, PA, is the kind of place that you want to work. They’re an industry leader, and they have a gaming room and go carts. What more could you ask for? Oh yeah, they’re privately held and profitable, having done business for 11 years.

Jobs in E-mail

Ok, I said this last week, but if you want jobs in your e-mail, then sign up here (they’re delivered by FeedBurner now, but hopefully we can move them over to Aweber soon). If you want jobs in e-mail, then you should check out Aweber. Even though the overall economy sucks, there are plenty of companies that are growing like crazy right now. Aweber has 38 employes right now, and they’re looking to add 5 more people – that means they’re looking to increase their workforce by 13%. They can do this because they offer an affordable service that helps other people make money through e-mail marketing. Of the 5 jobs that Aweber is trying to fill, 4 appear to be suitable for entry level candidates. Three are as Web Developers and one is as a Customer Solutions Specialist. The jobs sound awesome, the perks look sweet, and you can find out all of the details on Aweber’s Jobs page. You can apply by e-mail (big surprise) at resumes@aweber.com, but be sure to read over the specific application requirements first. You should also check out their Core Values too – they say a lot about what Aweber is all about.

When Jason Seiden and I decided that we were going to do an online job search prep course, we knew that we wanted to build a buzz before the course was open for enrollment. We decided that the best way to let people know more information about the course was to build an e-mail list. That’s what we did, and very quickly hundreds of people who were interested in the course signed up to be given more information via e-mail. When you need to manage an e-mail list of that size, it’s a lot easier to use third-party software. We went with a company called Aweber, but we looked at a number of other companies that offer similar services. One of those companies was Constant Contact, which is based out of Waltham, MA. As they put it, they help “small businesses, associations, and nonprofits connect with their customers, clients, and members” through “leading email marketing and online survey tools—supported by its expert personal coaching and support.” In fact, if you scroll to the bottom of many of the mass e-mails that you get, there’s a good chance that you’ll see a Constant Contact logo at the bottom.

Jobs in E-mail

If you want jobs in your e-mail, then sign up here (they’re delivered for me by FeedBurner, not Constant Contact). If you want jobs in e-mail, then you should check out Constant Contact. They’ve been around since 1998 and they have more than a quarter million customers. Despite the fact that e-mail isn’t a hot new Web 2.0 technology, it’s still one of the best ways to connect with people in a meaningful way. There’s a good reason that companies like mine pay good money to companies like Constant Contact to provide e-mail marketing tools – there’s a huge return on investment. That’s why it’s no surprise that Constant Contact appears to be doing well despite the down economy. They have nearly two dozen job openings posted on their Careers page, and a few of them appear to be appropriate for new and recent grads (some require a few years of experience). These include Entry Level Software Engineer, Junior Developer (Contract), Business Intelligence Reporting Analyst, Inside Sales Representative (Loveland, CO), Compliance Specialist, and Customer Support Specialist (Loveland, CO or Waltham, MA). You can apply for all of these jobs online, so check out the descriptions and see if anything is a good fit.

Since we launched, we’ve wanted to do a post on entry-level jobs at DailyCandy. We’ve been waiting for them to post something appropriate, and they finally have! The timing is perfect, since we just got some inside info on DailyCandy’s Fall internships, which we’ve posted about on One Day, One Internship. Daily Candy has extremely talented copywriters copywriters, so we’re going to use their words to tell you what they’re all about.

DailyCandy, a free, daily e-mail newsletter and website, is the insider’s guide to what’s hot, new, and undiscovered — from fashion and style to gadgets, travel, beauty, and more. As useful as it is entertaining, it’s like getting an e-mail from your clever, unpredictable, and totally in-the-know best friend. The one who knows about secret beauty treatments, must-have jeans, hot new restaurants — and always shares the scoop. DailyCandy is the creation of journalist Dany Levy, who, in 2000, found herself frustrated by the limits of magazine lead times. She developed a new, immediate way to share information while it was still fresh and actionable with an affluent, influential female audience.

DailyCandy is Sweet for Marketers Too

DailyCandy is not only a phenomenal resource for savvy women, it’s also a marketer’s dream come true. DailyCandy has 2.6 million e-mail subscribers, and the majority of those subscribers come from a very valuable demographic. The stats on their subscribers are amazing – 95% are female, 64% are under 35, 92% have at least a college degree, and the median household income is $75,000. Can you say targeting? Even more impressive is that 96% of DailyCandy subscribers read their e-mails every day or almost every day, 63% forward articles to friends, and 66% bought something that they read about in DailyCandy. Those are some amazing numbers, and they have a lot to do with why Comcast has apparently shelled out $125 million for DailyCandy.

We won’t deny it, DailyCandy is our role model. What they’ve done with Fashion, Beauty & Fitness, Lifestyle, House & Home, Food & Drink, Travel, and Arts & Culture is what we are trying to do with entry-level jobs (and internships on One Day, One Internship). No, we don’t think that we’ll sell for $125 million, but we’re in love with their business model.

If You Like Our Daily Jobs, You’ll Love Working at DailyCandy

We’ve been watching the DailyCandy Jobs page like a hawk for many months. We’ve waited and waited for something that could be considered entry-level to be posted. Last week we saw that DailyCandy is looking for an Ad Traffic Coordinator in New York City. The job description says that they want someone with one year of work experience in advertising trafficking, but that screams entry-level to us. There are some pretty specific requirements and qualifications, but they don’t seem to be anything that a new grad couldn’t handle. The good news is that the job description is really comprehensive, so you should have a good idea if it’s something that you should apply for. If it is, send a cover letter and resume to prodjobs@dailycandy.com.

DailyCandy also has job openings for an Account Executive in Detroit and an Advertising Production Manager in NYC, but both of these jobs require 3 years of experience – something to aspire to. DailyCandy is an amazing company, and from what we hear they’re a lot of fun to work for. They don’t post entry-level opportunities very often, so jump on this while it’s still available!

Judging by the number of you who enjoy reading about jobs in your e-mail or RSS reader, there seems to be a pretty big market for delivering fresh content in an easily digestible format. There’s something really nice about having information delivered to you instead of having to seek it out. Well, we found a company that uses the same methods as we do to deliver content, but brings you literature instead of jobs. They’re called DailyLit, and they can bring people full length books through RSS or e-mail.

One Day, One Book?

Not quite. If DailyLit delivered a new book in your e-mail every day, you’d never read any of them. That’s why they break books up into installments – chunks that you can easily read while you’re going through your e-mail. You can get one, two, or four installments a day. If that’s not enough, you can click a link and have the next installment sent immediately. Many people claim that they never have time to read for pleasure, but somehow they manage to get through 100s of mostly useless e-mails every day. DailyLit makes reading e-mail and reading for pleasure one and the same. They have a variety of books, some that are public domain and free, and others that are copyrighted and have a nominal cost. All you have to do is sign up, pick a book, and start reading.

We really love startups like this. They’re not going over the top with trying to be revolutionary. They took technology that already existed and paired it with a great idea to create a compelling product. They’ve offered free books to get people hooked, and if what they say is true, they’ve elegantly designed a system that makes reading more realistic. We’re definitely going to try some free books, so if you have any recommendations, please leave them in the comments.

Are You a Bookworm?

DailyLit has two job openings right now, and both are 100% entry-level. Their Jobs page lists an Editorial Assistant position and a Software Developer position. The descriptions are detailed and explicitly ask for new college grads. DailyLit is located in Mamaroneck, NY, and we can’t find too much more information on what it’s like to work for them. We do know that they’ve hired the former President of Del.icio.us and they’re going to give new grads a ton of responsibility from the start. This looks like a really cool opportunity for the book lovers out there, so get researching!

The word in the chat rooms (psyche, chat rooms are so 90′s) is that the latest trend in trend watching is the daily e-mail list. For the ladies there’s Daily Candy. For the dudes there’s Thrillist. And for the college seniors there’s One Day, One Job (yes, we have an e-mail list, and clicking that link will allow you to subscribe). It doesn’t get any easier than having other people do the hard work of trend hunting, while you sit back and read about their newest finds in your e-mail. Why pay attention when you can have people on the Internet tell you what’s hot and what’s not?

In case you’ve spent too much time in the library (or drinking), we’ll get you up to speed on why trend watching is big business. Daily Candy didn’t invent e-mail lists, but they put them to use like nobody had before. By focusing on a couple major urban centers and the wealthy women who stalk them for the best new ways to consume conspicuously, Daily Candy found itself a market of net savvy readers with a crazy amount of buying power. Advertisers like that. A lot. By adhering to a strict editorial policy (this links to Thrillist’s, because that’s whom we’re really talking about, despite a few paragraphs on Daily Candy) and only talking about what they like, Daily Candy is trusted by millions (yes, millions) of daily readers. Advertisers like this even more. They may not be able to buy themselves a review, but they can buy advertising that is inevitably linked to Daily Candy’s brand. And that’s how Daily Candy ended up with a valuation in the 9-figures.

Daily Candy will tell you that they have plenty of male readers, but it’s definitely not their target demographic. Thrillist, and a few other competitors, have picked up where Daily Candy dropped the ball and catered to manly men who want to read about things like babes, baseball, and bacon. There’s not much more to what they do, so if you want to entirely grasp what Thrillist is about, look through their vault (archive) and subscribe. If you’re really dying for more info, we did find these interviews with Thrillist founders (here and here), as well as some posts at Gawker about the daily e-mail for men.

Now, we’re not hiring yet, and Daily Candy doesn’t have any entry-level jobs at the moment (we check often), but Thrillist has one, possibly two, great jobs for our trend watching readers. They’re looking for a Marketing Coordinator/Design Assistant. This is a job that is tailor-made for new college graduates. You’ll be responsible for increasing brand awareness, helping Thrillist to draw more subscribers, and taking care of the little design-related issues that make Thrillist’s message come across more effectively. They want someone who can juggle 25 balls at once, so it will probably be intense, but not like juggling chainsaws or flaming knives. Their jobs page says to send a cover letter, resume, work sample, and salary requirements to jw@thrillist.com.

There’s also a position as an Advertising Sales Executive open. This is definitely not an entry-level job, so, unless you managed advertising for a major campus daily, or were doing some serious moonlighting from your dorm room, you probably won’t cut it. They want someone with experience in media planning or online sales who has a legit contact list that will help make deals happen. We almost didn’t mention it, but we thought the job description left the door open just enough to appeal to a few of our readers.

If either of these jobs is remotely interesting to you, why not apply? We’d be shocked if Thrillist wasn’t a fun place to work with a ton of weird perks.

Note: On April 24th we revisited entry-level jobs at Thrillist.
