Sometimes a non-profit organization’s name tells you exactly what they do, or example The Association for Energy Affordability or The National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship. Other organizations have names that aren’t quite as straightforward, like today’s non-profit Artist Boat. Quick! Try and guess what they do. Bet you didn’t guess that they are an organization that is “dedicated to promoting awareness and preservation of coastal margins and the marine environment through the disciplines of the sciences and the arts.”

Art in a Boat

Artist Boat encourages collaboration between marine scientists and artists. By doing so, they can:

1) Promote the preservation of fragile ecosystems through environmental education and the arts

2) Utilize the traditional tools of the sciences and the arts in coastal margins and the marine environment to bring people to places of awareness and reflection while visiting these habitats

3) Reflect the immense beauty, wonder and diversity of life contained in coastal margins and the marine environment back to their communities.

If you take a look at Artist Boat’s website, you’ll start to understand what they do a little better. Many of the photos on the site are of artists painting or drawing in kayaks. They’re painting/drawing scenes that you can’t just drive up to. Artist Boat has programs for youths and adults and they also offer an Eco-Art Curriculum. What a unique idea for a non-profit!

Artist Boat is currently hiring for 3 positions: Eco Art Arts/Science Educator, Eco-Art Arts Educator/Interpreter, and Administrative and Marketing Coordinator. The Educator positions are certainly appropriate for new college grads, but the Coordinator position is described as requiring a few years of experience. We think that an exceptional entry-level candidate might be able to do the job, so it’s worth looking at. Do you think it’s hard to paint in a rocking boat?

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! We’re not quite sure what’s going to be going on today with St. Paddy’s Day, Spring Break, and Holy Week all happening at the same time, but we’re just going to write about today’s job and not ask any questions. Obviously, we like to run with the holiday themes, and St. Patrick’s Day presented us with quite a few options (beer, green companies, pots of gold, etc.). We chose Shamrock Boats for the obvious reason, as well as the fact that I happen to be somewhere warm doing a little fishing today. We’ve never talked about a company in the boating industry before, so at the very least we hope it gets you thinking in new directions about your job search.

Shamrock Boats “is the largest producer of midsize (22ft-28ft) inboard powered sport fishing boats.” They’re even a little green – their direct-drive inboard propulsion engines apparently have unparalleled fuel efficiency for boats under 30 feet. We haven’t been able to find much career related information about Shamrock Boats, but maybe the luck of the Irish will touch your Google searches and help you find something that we couldn’t. We do know that Shamrock Boats’ parent company is Palmer Marine, and there is an employment application on their site. We also found contact information from a State of Florida employment website, so that might be your in for cold calling. Give Shamrock Boats a try, or think about other companies in the boating industry that might offer entry-level jobs. Report back to us about what you find in the comments section.
