There’s a reason that web startups with no semblance of a business plan but heaps of traffic continue to get venture capital funding. Consistently driving high quality traffic to a web property is extremely difficult, and almost all businesses need attention to succeed. Quality content is the cornerstone of driving traffic (that’s why I looked for writers when I was hiring interns), and content generation is not a core competency for most businesses. It is for Brafton. They’re a Boston, MA based “online news and content agency that offers integrated content marketing services.” They don’t brag about who their clients are like some other types of agencies (you can request live client samples), which makes sense since clients typically want people to think the content is coming straight from them.

Be Content at Brafton

I doubt any writers from Brafton will be winning Pulitzer Prizes, but I’m sure that’s ok with them. Their goal is to help their clients reach more customers by developing content that grabs attention and performs well on search engines and in social media. Brafton has a section of their website that is devoted to their business model, so I highly recommend that you read through that–including their case study–so that you can get a better sense of how they operate. They also provide information on their different teams, so you’ll probably want to read up on Account Management, Content Writing, and Social and E-mail. If you’d like to join one of those teams, you’re in luck because Brafton’s Careers page shows a ton of entry level opportunities. These include:

Graphic Resource Coordinator (Boston, MA)

Blog and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Market Research Executive (Boston, MA)

German News and Content Writer (Remote)

News and Content Writer (Chicago, IL)

Inside Sales Representative (Boston, MA)

News and Content Writer (Boston, MA)

Jr. Web Developer (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Boston, MA)

Business Development Executive (Scottsdale, AZ)

Content Marketing Specialist (San Francisco, CA)

You won’t be writing the next great novel at Brafton, but I’m sure you’ll learn a ton about developing content for the Internet with a focus on ROI. That’s insanely valuable these days.

If you’ve been reading for very long, you’ve probably seen me mention my girlfriend Amy. She’s awesome. She was the setter on Cornell’s volleyball team, she spent nearly 3 years as a consultant at McKinsey, and now she runs Competitive Intelligence at Groupon. I’m constantly impressed by her, and I’m extremely thankful for how supportive she has been as I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs to build this business. Considering that she’s stuck with me long enough to see One Day One Job achieve meaningful profitability, I figured it was time to put some of those profits towards a ring. I was referred to an amazing custom jeweler who walked me through the entire process and helped me design something that she’d be happy wearing forever. On Wednesday afternoon I got the ring, and on Wednesday night I popped the question. Thankfully, she said yes! While I didn’t use Blue Nile for the ring, I thought it was a fitting company to take a look at today because I was constantly on their site doing research during the process. They’re based in Seattle, WA, and they’ve become “the largest online retailer of certified diamonds and fine jewelry.”

I Didn’t Go to Jared

Buying a ring has to be one of the most intimidating processes that a young guy can go through. It’s really tempting to do the whole thing online, and Blue Nile’s focus on customer service makes that a reasonable choice (though I’m glad I didn’t do it online). I think the best thing that they offer is a 30-day guaranteed return period, but it’s in tight competition with their user interface. It’s ridiculously easy to find what you’re looking for–and if you don’t know what you’re looking for, it’s ridiculously easy to educate yourself using Blue Nile’s resources. Even though I didn’t buy from them, I’m still a huge fan, which is why I think that you should take a look at Blue Nile’s Jobs page. They have a few opportunities that look well suited for a new grad including: Bilingual Customer Service Representative, Assistant Buyer, and Website Development Engineer. The jewelry business is fascinating, so working at Blue Nile would probably be pretty exciting.

Two engagement tips:

1. Use browser privacy when you’re looking for jewelry online. If you don’t, you will get bombarded by ads.

2. Don’t change your relationship status on Facebook until your fiancée has told everyone she needs to tell. Even though it says that it will wait for her confirmation, it will still tell everyone that you’re engaged (but not whom you’re engaged to until you’ve confirmed). I learned this one the hard way.

Despite the fact that I come from an extremely artistic family (Dad – architect, Mom – graphic designer, Sister – painter), I know almost nothing about art. So it shouldn’t surprise you that I know even less about Latin American art. But if I did want to start learning about it, I’d probably head to the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, CA. It’s a non-profit organization that “educates the public through the collection, preservation, presentation and interpretation of modern and contemporary Latin American art in order to promote cross-cultural dialogue.” It was founded in 1996, and since then it has doubled in size.

Makes Some Moolah at MOLAA

It’s kind of art to tell you about a museum that I’ver been to that covers a topic that I know nothing about. That’s why you should head over to the MOLAA website and start browsing around. They have a lot of info on their exhibitions online, so you can check out things like The Good, The Bad, The Ugly? and MEX/L.A.: “Mexican” Modernism(s) in Los Angeles, 1930-1985. What I think is cool about the Museum of Latin American Art is that it’s as much about the culture as it is about the art. There’s a more cohesive story behind their collections than you may find at other more generalized museums. So if you’re a big fan of Latin American art, you’ll probably want to take a look at MOLAA’s Jobs page. Right now they have a couple interesting positions including Assistant to Museum Registrar and Membership Manager (a little more experience required). Check them out and see if either interests you.

During high school I was inducted into The Société Honoraire de Français. Though I don’t remember it, I apparently recited, “L’homme qui sait deux langues en vaut deux” (The man who knows two languages is worth two men). I guess that means I’m worth just barely more than a single man, because I never took a French class after the ceremony (mostly to avoid crazy French teachers). Since then I’ve traveled to places like Paris and Montreal, and a small part of me wishes I had kept up with the language so that I could better appreciate the culture. If I lived in New York, NY, I could use the resources provided by the French Institute Alliance Française. They’re a non-profit organization that aims “to create and offer New Yorkers innovative and unique programs in education and the arts that explore the evolving diversity and richness of French cultures.”

Parlez Français

The French Institute and Alliance Française were actually two separate organizations until they merged in 1971. Together they teach more than 6,000 language students, maintain “the most comprehensive private French library in the United States,” and put on all kinds of cultural events. There’s also a big emphasis on art at FIAF. If you’re a lover of French culture, then you should definitely check out the FIAF and maybe consider joining. You may even want to consider working for them. Right now their jobs page shows that they’re looking for Lighting and Sound Technicians and Deck Hands. While on Idealist, it shows that they’re looking for Early Childhood French Teachers and a Marketing Coordinator. Just make sure that you don’t “parler le français comme une vache espagnole.”

I’ve come to accept that I’ll probably never learn a foreign language (maybe I’ll try a new computer programming language one day). I think my crazy high school French teacher ruined me, but I must admit that technology is making the idea of learning another language more and more attractive. The problem with most language learning software is that it can be really expensive? Mango Languages is a Farmington Hills, MI based company that has solved this problem for a lot of consumers. They provide online language learning services mostly to libraries, schools, government agencies, and corporations. That means that they get the guys with deep pockets to foot the bill for the people who are actually learning the new languages. It’s a smart approach that works considering that Mango Languages made the Inc. 5000 with 629% three-year revenue growth to $3.8 million in revenue.

Do You Like Mangoes?

Now anybody can go sign up for one of Mango Languages online courses (and the prices actually don’t look bad at all), but they’ve made a conscious decision to target multi-use accounts. That means their sales approach is likely different from other companies that offer similar products. Speaking of the product, you’ll probably want to check out what Mango Languages offers. You can read up on their methodology, check out some of their videos, and even do a free trial. That should answer all your questions, but if it doesn’t, you can take a look at the Mango Languages FAQs.
As my actions show, I’m a strong believer that entrepreneurship can solve most of societies problems. It’s amazing what you can create with your own labor and a little bit of investment. That’s why I find the microfinance movement so interesting. What I don’t understand is why there isn’t more focus on this kind of lending in the United States. Grameen America is a five-year old non-profit that is changing this. They’re based in New York, NY, and they’re aiming for “a market where any individual with a dream can receive affordable financial products regardless of income, previous credit history, education, or business experience.” Grameen America is attacking poverty head on, and it seems like they’re having some great success.

Take a Micro Approach

What’s really cool about Grameen America is that they took something that worked well in addressing poverty in Bangladesh and brought it to America. I feel like it usually goes the other way. To better understand what Grameen America does, you should take a look at their model. There’s a big social aspect to how Grameen America lends, and I think that has to play a big part in why they have success stories like these. If you like what Grameen America is doing, take a look at their Jobs page. Right now they’re hiring Center Manager Trainees. It looks like the perfect opportunity for a new or recent grad who wants to get into microfinance.

Last Sunday we took a look at the International Foundation for Electoral Systems and how they’re promoting democracy across the world by helping build strong electoral systems. Today we’re going to look at an organization with similar goals, but a very different approach. The Center for International Private Enterprise is a Washington, DC based non-profit that “strengthens democracy around the globe through private enterprise and market-oriented reform.” We often emphasize the political freedom part of democracy, but I’m convinced that economic freedom is just as, if not more, important. The Center for International Private Enterprise or CIPE is all about helping countries build an economic system that encourages a democratic way of life.

CIPE Your Sources

CIPE is “one of the four core institutes of the National Endowment for Democracy,” and the National Endowment for Democracy is a “U.S. non-profit organization that was founded in 1983 to promote US-friendly democracy by providing cash grants funded primarily through an annual allocation from the U.S. Congress.” CIPE’s “key program areas include anti-corruption, advocacy, business associations, corporate governance, democratic governance, access to information, the informal sector and property rights, and women and youth.” These are all areas that are essential to building a thriving private sector. You can dig into each of these program areas and learn more about the specific work encompassed by each of them on the CIPE website. If the work looks interesting to you, then you’ll want to take a look at CIPE’s Jobs page or their postings on Idealist which include Program Assistant positions for Asia, Iraq, and Eurasia. It’s hard to say whether the jobs are still open or they’re slow to take things off of Idealist, but it’s certainly worth applying.

We often forget that this country has been built (and is continuing to be built) by immigrants. For hundreds of years people have risked everything that they had to try for a better life in America. While just getting here is a journey, the first few years of “making a new life, working for a better future, starting a family with limited means” can be daunting. The Lower East Side Tenement Museum in New York, NY tells the story of life in America for nearly 7,000 immigrants from over 20 countries who lived in the building between the years of 1863 and 1935. It’s a part of American history that doesn’t get a lot of attention (how many of us have visited colonial era museums?), yet it’s an extremely important part of our national identity.

97 Orchard Street

What’s most interesting about the Lower East Side Tenement Museum (which is part of the International Coalition of Sites of Conscience) is that it gives us deep insight into how much living standards have changed over the past century. By sheer luck 97 Orchard Street was left as it was for more than 50 years, and when museum founders Ruth Abram and Anita Jacobson stumbled upon it, they knew it was the perfect place for building “a museum that honored America’s immigrants.” If you want to be part of sharing the history of the immigrants who built this country, then take a look at Jobs at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. They have a number of interesting opportunities including Museum Shop Associate, Visitor Services Associate, Collections Manager & Registrar, Costumed Interpreter/Educator, and Executive Assistant. Give them all a look.

A few weeks ago in my post on SailThru, I urged you to consider e-mail marketing as a career option. It’s a field that provides an immense amount of value to businesses, yet it gets far too little attention–especially from college students and grads. One of the keys to doing well with e-mail marketing is finding great tools to use. I use Aweber to deliver our daily e-mails, but I’m constantly tempted to switch over to MailChimp. They’re an Atlanta, GA company that is growing at an insane rate. They offer a platform for e-mail marketing that just keeps on getting better for a user base that is climbing towards 1 million. MailChimp’s attention to design and detail has made them a standout in a space that is getting more and more crowded. Every day I seem to notice that another e-mail newsletter that I’m subscribed to has moved over to MailChimp.

Start Chimping Around

One of the best ways to understand how MailChimp serves their clients is to read through some of their Customer Stories. You’ll learn all about what MailChimp offers and how companies are using these services to build better businesses. You can even set up a free MailChimp account and use it to start learning a little bit about e-mail marketing. MailChimp is so product-focused that learning about their product is the best way to learn about their company–though they do seem to have a pretty sweet culture too (you can just feel it on their website). Additionally, MailChimp has one of, if not the best Jobs page that I’ve ever seen. It’s simple, clear, and beautiful. It also has a bunch of jobs that seem perfect for new or recent grads including Compliance Geek, Tech-support Geek, Multilingual Tech-support Geeks (Spanish, French, Portuguese, German or Dutch), Infrastructure Engineer, PHP Developer, IT Human, Zookeeper (Office Manager), and Web Analyst. These look like awesome jobs, so check them out–even if it’s just so that you can experience a Jobs page that isn’t completely frustrating to use.

I took French in middle and high school, and I hated it even though I was pretty good at it. I dropped French as quickly as I could (after 10th grade) and never tried another language. Now I realize how important speaking multiple languages can be. Unfortunately, picking up a new language gets progressively harder as you get older. If only I had started as a young kid. That’s what Global Language Project is all about. They’re a New York, NY based non-profit organization that “seeks to equip disadvantaged public-school students with the skills to compete in a globalized world and work force” through a “free and comprehensive language training program.” It’s amazing how many opportunities can be opened up for you just by speaking multiple languages. Global Language Project aims to leverage this fact to empower young students.

The Skill Multiplier

I think of language skills as a skill multiplier. On their own they might be enough to get you a job, but by combining them with other skills they open up a world of opportunities that wouldn’t otherwise be available. This is just one of the many benefits of language learning. By starting students off on a new language while they’re still young, Global Language Project is giving them a huge leg up. I’m certain I would have enjoyed French a lot more if I had started when I was younger. Global Language Project has a number of different programs, but all are focused on elementary language education. If you want to be part of Global Language Project, check out their jobs on Idealist. Right now they’re looking for a Program Site Coordinator and Elementary French, Spanish, Arabic, and Mandarin Instructors. If you love language, these are great opportunities.

Communication in the workplace can be a major hassle, especially considering the fact that a lot of people who work together are doing so from different locations these days. E-mail was an amazing step forward, but it still has a ton of flaws. (I’m dying for an e-mail client that is built for how I think and work–nothing comes close.) Now that I’m starting to consider hiring interns or part-timers (more on that soon!), I need to come up with a way to communicate with them and manage projects. Social networks like Twitter and Facebook are on to something with their interfaces, but they are most certainly not for communicating about work. I’ve played around with the the WordPress P2 Theme, which turns blogging software into something Twitter-like, but I’m not completely sold on it. I’ve also heard some good things about San Francisco, CA based Yammer, which seems to be a pretty sweet solution. Yammer enables “people to create private enterprise social networks.” It’s more collaborative than e-mail, and it allows you to open up conversations to a wider audience without annoying them.

Communicate Your Skills

Most major companies have Intranets. They’re moderately useful, but they are often completely lifeless. Yammer brings life to internal networks. They’re already working with major clients like Deloitte, Groupon, PayPal, and lots of other big names. The product looks like it’s super simple to use, and it has a ton of useful features. What may be the coolest thing about Yammer is that you only need an e-mail address to set up your own network. I put in my e-mail, and in a matter of a few seconds I had my own Yammer network set up (but nobody to Yammer with). There’s still a lot of progress to be made in the area of communication in the workplace, but Yammer has taken some major leaps. If you like what they’re doing, take a look at their Jobs page. They have great some great opportunities for new grads including:

We all have a Good Samaritan story–a time where we helped someone in need or were helped by someone when we were in need. These are the moments when people are at their best, yet they don’t seem to happen often enough. Samaritan’s Purse has spent the last 40 years working to ensure that the story of the Good Samaritan lives on and continues to inspire people to “go and do likewise.” Samaritan’s Purse is a non-profit “nondenominational evangelical Christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world.” They’re based out of Boone, NC, but they’re constantly repositioning their resources to react to world events. Samaritan’s Purse’s work can typically be separated into two categories: Emergency Relief Programs and Community Development and Vocational Programs. While these two Program groups serve very different situations, they share the goal of helping people in need wherever they may be.

Be a Good Samaritan

There’s no better way to get a feel for Samaritan’s Purse’s work (besides actually joining them and doing it) than taking a look at the In Pictures section of their website. It will give you a feel for what they do, how they do it, and whom they help. One of their major relief projects is focused on helping Japan and the Japanese people recover from the earthquake and tsunami that struck in March of 2011. Samaritan’s Purse was on the ground almost immediately (as you can see here, here, and here). The need for immediate relief supplies has obviously subsided, but now Samaritan’s Purse is leading a rebuilding effort. They are working in a number of communities to get the Japanese people back to a normal way of life before winter comes. This is a tall task when you consider that one community they’re working in “lost 70% of its physical structure” and another was hit by a wave as tall as a 12-story building, but Samaritan’s Purse has a history of excelling with this kind of work.

Right now Samaritan’s Purse is recruiting heavily for their Japan reconstruction effort. Right now their biggest need is for Japanese Interpreters and they think that recent college grads could be perfect fits (they’d also love to hear from people with more experience). This position is vital to the reconstruction effort, and it offers an amazing opportunity to get life-changing experience while doing amazing work. Christian values are an essential part of what Samaritan’s Purse does, so be sure to read their Statement of Faith and learn about their leader Franklin Graham before applying. And if you don’t speak Japanese, there are plenty of other job opportunities posted on Samaritan’s Purse’ Jobs page, and many are perfectly suited for new and recent grads. They include:

Japanese Interpreter (Japan)

Digital Video Producer (Boone, NC)

Marketing/Metrics Analyst (Boone, NC)

Network Administrator (Boone, NC)

Curriculum & Training Specialist (Boone, NC)

Bio-Med Technician (Boone, NC)

These look like amazing jobs that truly offer the opportunity to make the world a better place. Give them a look and see which positions fit you the best.

Usually when readers recommend companies, I put them on my list and cover them soon after if they look interesting and have relevant opportunities. Lately I’ve had two readers mention that they applied to Octagon, but I somehow overlooked the company. My only excuse is that I’m often skeptical of sports and entertainment marketing companies because there are so many sports marketing hiring scams. But that’s very clearly not the case with Octagon, they’ve been around since 1983 and they have offices all across the world. As they put it, they’re “the recognized, global thought leader in passion-based, sports & entertainment marketing.” Some of people they represent are Chris Paul, Michael Phelps, Randy Johnson, John Elway, Elena Dementieva, Landry Fields, Michael Johnson, Anna Kournikova, Apolo Anton Ohno, and many more huge names.

Can You Compete Inside the Octagon?

From what I can tell, Octagon separates their business into four divisions. On their Octagon’s What We Do page, you’ll see links to: Marketing, Marketing North America, Athletes & Personalities, and Events. Within the Athletes & Personalities section you’ll find links to specific verticals like OctagoOly.com, OctagonHockey.com, OctagonBasketball.com. Additionally, there are separate sites for Octagon’s international businesses like OctagonBrazil.com, and Octagon-UK.com. It’s all a bit overwhelming, but it’s indicative of how big Octagon’s presence is in the field of sports and entertainment marketing. In fact, the best overview of what Octagon’s businesses actually do is on their Careers page. Once you read through that, then you can take a look at their current job postings. Right now they have a few positions that seem right for a new or recent grad including Account Executive – Telecom (Kansas City, KS), Non-Profit & Media Relations Coordinator (Portland, ME), Account Executive – Sales Assistant (Norwalk, CT), Associate Producer – Digital (Norwalk, CT), and Account Executive – Multicultural – Home Improvement (Atlanta, GA).

Yesterday our e-mail provider failed to send out our daily e-mail about Organic Motion. You can find that post here. We’re working on changing providers to make sure this doesn’t happen again.

If you’re not spending at least 15 minutes a week reading Wikipedia articles, you’re selling yourself short. As a job seeker you need to be constantly learning about new stuff. Wikipedia is an amazing, free resource for learning about general concepts, but what if you are seeking more specific knowledge? The Wiki format is great, but that’s not what Wikipedia is about. Luckily, there are all kinds of Wiki-powered communities that cover niche topics “ranging from video games, TV shows and movies to food, fashion, and environmental sustainability.” Wikia is a San Francisco, CA based company that provides the platform for many of these Wiki-based communities. The company was founded by Jimmy Wales, who also founded Wikipedia (he’s the creepy guy who stares at you and asks for donations on all of their pages). Both sites use very similar technology, but Wikia is a place for more focused communities that may or may not have a commercial purpose.

Wiki Wiki

There are a ton of cool communities built on Wikia, many of them are officially sanctioned. For instance in TV shows there are Mad Men and NCIS, in movies there are Harry Potter and Avatar, and in games there are Call of Duty and World of Warcraft. To get a feel for it, you should browse around Wikia—they do a great job of spotlighting their top wikis. The video below will give you a quick overview of how Wikia works (e-mail readers should click through).

Now, you’re probably wondering how Wikia makes money. It’s a combination of advertising and “partner programs.” You can get a look behind the curtains by looking at Wikia’s Media Kit. The network of Wikia sites gets a ton of traffic, and they must be monetizing it well. Wikia doesn’t appear to have received any new funding in over 4 years, yet their Jobs page shows quite a few openings. The ones that seem most suitable for new or recent grads include UI Designer, Junior Designer, Sales/Sponsored Links Coordinator, Online Advertising Account Executive, Community Manager, German Gaming Helper, German Entertainment Helper, and Italian Speaking Helpers. There’s a good mix of opportunities, so check them out.

Sometimes I get dubbed as a career expert. I guess in some ways that’s true, but I see myself more as an entrepreneur whose business is helping students and grads find jobs and internships. In my opinion it takes way more knowledge and experience to become an expert. I’m talking about people with PhDs and 30 years of experience, and, amazingly, there are experts on nearly every topic. But how do you find them when you need them? That’s where Gerson Lehrman Group comes in. They’re professional matchmakers when it comes to experts. Since 1998 they’ve created a global marketplace for expertise and “helped the world’s leading institutions find, engage, and manage experts across a broad range of industries and disciplines.” I have friends who have actually used Gerson Lehrman Group in their jobs to find experts, and I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews about the people at Gerson Lehrman Group and their experts (who are not employed by the firm).

Become an Expert on Experts

Now, you’re coming from a college campus which is likely littered with experts. You can probably walk into a random professor’s office hours and gain insight from the foremost expert on some archaic topic. Usually expertise isn’t so free and easy. Businesses, consulting firms, and non-profit organizations are constantly seeking outside expertise to help guide their decision-making processes. Gerson Lehrman Group takes the pain out of finding the right expert for the job. While they provide experts in nearly any area imaginable, Gerson Lehrman Group calls out Accounting & Financial Analysis, Consumer Goods & Services, Energy & Industrials, Financial & Business Services, Healthcare, Legal, Economic, & Regulatory Affairs, Real Estate, and Technology, Media & Telecom as their main areas of focus. There’s a ton of information on the Gerson Lehrman Group, so you should really dig in and get to know the company in a little more depth. Then you can check out their Careers page and Job listings. Some examples of their entry level opportunities include: Business Development Associate (New York, NY), Event Coordinator (Austin, TX), Survey Associate (Austin, TX), Associate Copywriter (New York, NY), Associate (Dublin, Ireland), Recruiting Associate – Fluent Portuguese (Austin, TX), Member Solutions Associate – Fluent Portuguese (Austin, TX), and Front End Web Developer (New York, NY). However, you may want to pay most attention to their Associate and Associate – 2011 positions, which are both a two-year program for new/recent grads in Austin, TX.

On Thursday I got to see Seth Godin at a live event that he put on in Chicago (it was awesome). One of the most powerful things that he said was on the topic of education and how our system is broken. He said that “parents should home school their kids every day from 3 PM to 10 PM.” He doesn’t mean helping them with homework or reteaching them what they learned earlier in the day. He means that parents should get their kids working on interesting problems that are stimulating and worth doing. Kid Power is a Washington, DC based non-profit organization “that provides [after school] educational programming for 275 youth from underserved communities.” They step in for parents who may not be available or equipped to provide their kids with “home schooling” opportunities.

Do You Have Kid Power?

Kid Power’s programs seem as though they could offer some pretty exciting opportunities for kids. There’s baking, gardening, sculpture, performing arts, and more. The goal is to empower “youth to become informed and engaged advocates for change in their own lives and in their communities.” Kid Power offers “after-school programs at six public elementary schools, two middle schools, and four neighborhood/DPR sites,” so they’re operating on a relatively small scale now, but that’s how successes start. If you’re intrigued by their programs, you should check out their jobs on Idealist. There’s only one position posted right now—Spanish Speaking Site Coordinator. It’s only part-time, but the non-profit job market is tough right now, so this is the kind of opportunity that you shouldn’t be overlooking.

It’s story time today! Let’s go back three years to when I was still job searching. I was getting extremely frustrated with the recruitment process, and I was starting to think about how I could make online job search better. Beyond my typical job searching, I was reading everything that I could about the online recruitment industry. I was generating new ideas, and trying to find a way in so that other job searchers wouldn’t have to go through what I went through. I took an especially strong interest in Indeed, not only because they provide an excellent job search engine, but also because they were an innovative and successful startup located in Stamford, CT—just 20 minutes from where I was living at the time (they also have an office in Austin, TX). They were still small, and they didn’t really have any job postings that were suitable for me, so I e-mailed the CEO. I told him why I wanted to work for him and what I thought that I could bring to the table. It worked, and I got an interview (going straight to the top is an underrated job search method). After clearing the phone screen, I got invited to the office to meet with some people on the team, and, to my surprise, that included the CEO whom I had e-mailed my initial “cover letter” to. The interview was kind of a disaster. It went well at first, but I had already started working on One Day, One Job, and telling a potential employer that you’re starting a company in the same space isn’t typically a good idea. I didn’t get offered the job (nor did they ever formally reject me), but I think it all ended up for the better.

Yes, Indeed

Indeed’s business model looks a lot like Google’s. Scour the Internet for information, organize that information in a coherent fashion, and spit it back to users in a relevant way with ads mixed in with the content. While Google does it for everything, Indeed only focuses on jobs. You probably already know all about Indeed, because if you’re job searching and not coming across Indeed at least occasionally, you’re either not searching very hard or using an ultra targeted, networking approach (which I approve of highly). If you don’t have a problem with getting meta about your job search by looking for a job at a job search company, then take a look at jobs at Indeed. They have a bunch of opportunities, and a number of them seem suitable for new or recent grads. These include opportunities at their Stamford, CT office like: Account Executive – Staffing and Sales Account Executive. And opportunities in their Austin, TX office like: Software Development Engineer, User Interface Developer, Web Front End Developer, Country Marketing Associate – Native Australian, Country Marketing Associate – Native Canadian, Country Marketing Associate – Native Spanish, Marketing Associate, and Online Marketing Analyst. I’m still a fan of Indeed, even if they didn’t offer me a job, so go get the job that I couldn’t.

So, I don’t think that I’ve taken note of Earth Day since elementary school… or last year when I wrote a post about New Leaf Paper. Yes, I may seem a bit ambivalent about a holiday started by hippies, but I really do care about the environment (so much though that I’m taking a few days off next week to head out into the woods and go fishing). Today is the 40th Earth Day, and I have to say it’s amazing how far we’ve come in fighting pollution. In fact, we’ve come so far that we’re now more concerned with the gas that we all exhale than toxic waste and acid rain. A big portion of the environmentalist movement’s attention now seems to be focused on finding alternative sources of energy, which seems to make sense. One company that is enabling environmentalist consumers to make more conscious choices about energy consumption is Austin, TX based Green Mountain Energy. Now, let’s be honest, most of you have never paid an electric bill. But when you do, wouldn’t you like to be able to choose a clean energy alternative or purchase carbon offsets? That’s what Green Mountain Energy is offering in both regulated and deregulated markets.

Put Your Energy to Good Use

Most people aren’t used to having a choice when it comes to utilities. Your faucet is always going to run with the same water, and your tv won’t work any differently no matter whom you’re buying your electricity from. However, Green Mountain Energy is working to change that attitude. They know that consumers have a conscience and want to feel good about their purchasing decisions. That’s why Green Mountain Energy has built a business on charging a premium for a cleaner alternative to what used to be a commoditized product. I doubt we’ll ever see electricity snobs who opine on the benefits of one solar plants energy over another (think wine snobs), but I’m sure you’re not too far away from hearing someone at a cocktail party brag about paying more for solar powered electricity. If you love Earth Day and think there’s a big future in alternative energy, then you better check out Green Mountain Energy’s Careers page. Right now they have 15 jobs posted, and a few look suitable for new grads. These include Retention Specialist, Bilingual Sales Rep, Bilingual Retention Specialist, Event Planner (Dallas, TX), and a number of other part-time positions.

When I was in 6th or 7th grade, I played a trading card game called Magic the Gathering. Being a baseball card collector, I was more interested in what the cards were worth than actually playing the game. I occasionally played with my friends, but when they lost interest, I went back to baseball cards. Many trading card games came after (I didn’t play any of them), but apparently Magic the Gathering was the first. I had long forgotten about Wizards of the Coast, the company that was behind Magic cards, when I came across their name again. I took a look, and was surprised to see that the Renton, WA based company has grown quite a bit over the past decade and was eventually purchased by Hasbro. Wizards of the Coast is still a gaming company—the world leader in hobby games—and their brands include Dungeons & Dragons, Duel Masters, Heroscape, Axis & Allies, and Star Wars in addition to Magic the Gathering.

Are You Wizard Enough?

It’s surprising that a company can have as much success as Wizards of the Coast while still staying seemingly under the radar, but that’s exactly why the company has been so successful. Instead of expanding outside of their niche market as they’ve grown, Wizards has stayed true to themselves and grown within their market. They have an insanely loyal following, which is why the competition for jobs at Wizards of the Coast can be extremely fierce. Their most sought after positions are in Game Design and Game Development, and right now they don’t have anything at the entry level in those areas. They do, however, have positions available for Freelance Online Flash Designers, a Sales Web Content Coordinator, and a Wizards Play Network Coordinator for Germany/Austria.

This is a sponsored post for New York City Teaching Fellows. Check out our editorial post on entry level jobs with New York City Teaching Fellows to see what we said when we first covered them.

Before I launched One Day, One Job in 2007, I shared my idea with employers at a Cornell University career fair. One of the organizations from the fair that I was most impressed with was New York City Teaching Fellows. They are an alternative teacher certification program that firmly believes that putting the highest quality teachers in New York City public schools will lead to better academic outcomes for the students in those schools. Out of 30 or so employers that I spoke with at the fair, they were the only one forward-looking enough to actually follow up with me. As a result, they were one of the first non-profits that we featured, and now, more than 2 years later, they’re leading the charge again as one of our first sponsors. Since their inception in 2000, New York City Teaching Fellows has placed more than 13,500 teachers in New York City schools, so they are constantly looking for innovative ways to reach talented new grads. That’s why they’re working with us to reach you.

Fellowship of the Teachers

In 2000, the New York City Department of Education faced a serious teacher shortage, and in response they launched New York City Teaching Fellows. Ten years later NYCTF’s Fellows account for 11% of New York City’s population of teachers. Since 2000, the Fellowship has focused specifically on the highest need subject areas such as special education, science, math, bilingual education and Spanish. Today, the highest need subject areas are special education and science, and NYCTF anticipates most Fellows for 2010 to be trained to teach in these subject areas. As an alternative certification program, NYCTF recruits and prepares high-quality, dedicated individuals who have no prior background or experience in education. These people are often new college graduates, but they may also be career changers or people coming from graduate school.

If candidates meet NYCTF’s highly selective criteria—the organization only accepted 9% of 14,500 applicants in 2009—they are then fast-tracked into full-time teaching positions in New York City’s public schools. These Fellows first go through an intensive 7-week pre-service training program, and then continue their education through a subsidized Master’s degree program in conjunction with their teaching. It’s a tough path to becoming a teacher, but it’s intensely satisfying—at least that’s what NYCTF’s 92% first-year retention rate would indicate. I guess it also helps that Fellows with only a Bachelor’s degree will earn an annual salary of $45,530 with full benefits as a full-time teacher in the program.

Who Will Remember Your Name?

You know as well as anyone how important education is. It’s the reason that you’re able to read about New York City Teaching Fellows and say, “That’s something that I can do.” Not everyone has that opportunity, but you do. And by choosing to teach you can pass that opportunity on to your students. Getting a job is hard enough these days. Through the New York City Teaching Fellows program, you have the opportunity to earn a great salary, excellent benefits, a subsidized Master’s degree, and the ability to make a lasting difference in the lives of New York City’s children. Whether a career in education is in your long-term plans or it’s something that you are in the process of exploring, New York City Teaching Fellows is the perfect program for pursuing your ambition.

You can find all kinds of detailed information about New York City Teaching Fellows—from Fellow profiles to all of the details of the Fellowship—by visiting their home page at NYCTeachingFellows.org.

To apply for New York City Teaching Fellows’ June 2010 program, you should visit their Application page (be sure to use this link so that they know you came from One Day, One Job). The final deadline to apply is Monday, January 25, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. (EST), so get your act together soon!

While the Inc. 5000 is filled with exciting companies that you’ve probably never heard of, there are also some familiar names on the list. Rosetta Stone is a popular brand with job seekers, not because of their jobs, but because many new grads decide that they should put their free time to good use and learn a new language. (I think they’d be smarter to invest in a job search prep course, but I’m biased.) Rosetta Stone is far and away the biggest brand name when it comes to learning new languages, so it’s no big surprise that the Arlington, VA based company has grown from $48.4 million in revenue to $209.4 million over the past three years. In fact, the growth has been so strong that they recently held an IPO that was considered very successful.

A New Tongue, A New Job

While many companies in the business of selling content are struggling these days, Rosetta Stone continues to thrive because of their unique approach. They created a system for effectively teaching people languages on the computer, and then they modified the process for 30 different languages. Even though it costs them very little to administer their content to a new customer, they’re able to charge a significant amount of money because of how well their software works. If you love languages, then it’d be hard to find a company as interesting to work at as Rosetta Stone. They have a really nice looking Careers page, but they blow it by listing their jobs on CareerBuilder.

It’s actually relatively easy to browse Rosetta Stone’s 100+ job listings, I’m just averse to anything related to the big three job boards. In fact, you can even narrow down Rosetta Stone’s job listings to just entry level positions. Right now you’ll see listings for Customer Security Representative, Talent Acquisition Coordinator, Customer Care Representative, Associate Product Manager – Consumer Learning Products, and Consumer Product Support Specialist. There’s a good chance that some of Rosetta Stone’s other jobs are also suitable for new grads, but you’ll have to browse through the job postings yourself to find them. Since all of the positions are on CareerBuilder, you’ll have to apply through their website. You might also want to check our Rosetta Stone’s Facebook Recruiting page, where they talk about their campus recruiting.

I’ve done it. I’ve found the most ridiculous looking corporate website on the web. It has an animated moving background and multiple bouncing balloon/blimp logos that make it look like it’s straight out of the Imagination Land episode of South Park. It may be a little hokey, but it works for Niles, IL (right outside of Chicago) based The Bradford Group because they’re in the collectibles industry. Their customers aren’t concerned with flash and edginess, they’re all about sentimentality. When you’ve been doing direct marketing of collector plates, music boxes, and all kinds of commemorative items for 36 years, you probably know your audience. So, even though The Bradford Group’s web design leaves me laughing out loud, I’m not going to sell them short based on my taste as a non-collector. (And if you totally disagree with me and love the design, you can make it your computer’s background.)

Take a Balloon Ride

The Bradford Group has a wide variety of brands that fill different niches in the collectibles market. They have The Bradford Exchange, which is all about “limited-edition collector plates”, and there’s also Hawthorne Village, which focuses on “finely crafted collectible villages, electric trains, figurines and accessories.” There are also 9 more brands that market items like sports collectibles, ornaments, and diecast cars and trucks. It’s a business that I know nearly nothing about, but it sounds like it has a lot in common with MBI Inc., whose jobs we featured here a few months ago. Beyond having similar businesses, they also both seem to have a huge interest in entry level talent and recruiting in general. The Bradford Group’s website is plastered with links promoting their jobs, including a special section for College Recruiting. They seem to do a good amount of on-campus recruiting for positions like Direct Marketing Associate and Product Development Associate, and you can take a look at what kind of positions they currently have available here. They also have a call for freelance artists posted on their site. The current job postings seem to be more focused on interns than entry level, but there’s no reason that you shouldn’t try reaching out to them and finding out more about career options at The Bradford Group. Also, don’t forget to take an online tour of The Bradford Group’s headquarters, it looks pretty neat.

Memorial Day is one of my favorite holidays—not only because it signifies the start of summer, but also because I love small town patriotism. My hometown always has a fantastic parade that is often accompanied by a fighter jet fly over. Now, today’s employer may not immediately make you think of Memorial Day like last year’s did (it was Weber-Stephen, the manufacturer of my favorite charcoal grills), but you’ll realize pretty quickly why the National Park Service is a great choice for today. Not only are some of the parks that they manage great places to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend outdoors, but they’re also responsible for quite a few memorials including The Marine Corps War Memorial, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, The Korean War Veterans Memorial, and The World War II Memorial. Memorial Day is really about our fallen heroes, and the National Park Service is constantly working to honor them by maintaining and managing our memorials.

Celebrate Memorial Day All Year Long

If you love Memorial Day as much as I do, then a job with the National Park Service might be something worth thinking about. Whether you love the outdoors and want to be at Yosemite, love history and want to be at Lincoln’s Boyhood Home, or love our country and want to be at one of the memorials, you’ll have plenty of options. The NPS is constantly working to preserve “unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.” So, how do you land a job with them? You can start at the NPS Jobs page (it has some awesome photos from the 70s), but that will dump you into USAJobs.gov—use this link so that you only see jobs posted from the NPS. There are 163 jobs posted right now, and many of them are entry level, so we’re not going to wade through all of them for you, but you should know that the NPS typically hires in the following areas: Administration, Health and Safety, Archeology, History, Architecture, Human Resources, Biological Sciences, Landscape Architecture, Community Planning, Maintenance and Facility Management, Concessions, Natural Resources, Contracting, Park Police, Cultural Resources, Park Ranger (Protection), Engineering, Park Ranger (Interpretation), Financial Management, Park Site Interpretation, Firefighting, Physical Sciences, and Fire Management. That should help you direct your search on the USAJobs.gov site a little better. Applying for government jobs can be tricky, so be sure to pay very close attention to the details before you send in your application.

My first introduction to William Shatner was watching Rescue 911. Little did I know that his body of work extended far beyond narrating a show about real life heroes. I imagine today’s children will have an equally narrow view of William Shatner’s career, as they’ll know him as “Priceline Negotiator.” (Can you read those words without hearing the corresponding tune? I can’t.) Anyway, the whole idea behind William Shatner’s newest role – besides his doing the commercials in return for stock – is that Priceline.com will negotiate the best deals on travel-related items like hotels, car rentals, and airline tickets. They also have a “name your own price” model that used to be the core of their business, but now Priceline has widened its focus to discount travel in general.

Entry Level Job Negotiator

Don’t you wish you had someone like William Shatner to negotiate your entry level job for you too? Ok, that’d be a little weird. Sometimes learning negotiating skills is better than having someone do the dirty work for you. I think that I’m glad that the way we find jobs online is different from the way that we find travel deals online. With that said, you can go to the same place for both if you’re interested in a job in travel or e-commerce. Priceline.com has a number of jobs that seem like they might be well suited to new or recent college grads. In their Grand Rapids, MI office there are jobs for a Japanese Translator and Customer Service Executives, while at their Norwalk, CT headquarters they’re looking for an Associate Regional Revenue Manager – Hotels. You can figure out how to apply from the job descriptions that I’ve just linked to. Priceline.com doesn’t have an About page, so there’s not a ton of information about who they are and what they’re about as a company, so you might want to do a little Googling to get more info.

Back when I was in high school (yes, part of that was in the 90s), I thought that I was really savvy when it came to using the Web to do better in my English classes. I found online, public-domain versions of many of the books that I was reading. The best part was that these were searchable, so if I needed to find a quote or a specific passage, all I had to do was remember a key word or two. It was fantastic. A lot has changed since then, and I don’t even know the extent of what academic resources are available online now. What I do know is that it’s not fair that today’s students have access to sites like Shmoop, when I couldn’t even dream of something like it. What is Shmoop? It’s hard for me to describe briefly, so maybe you should take the Tour de Shmoop.

To Shmoop or Not to Shmoop?

If you took the tour, you saw that Shmoop is like a really awesome online tutor. It won’t do the work for you, but it will make learning, writing, and understanding a lot easier. It’s too bad that you’re almost done with school, so Shmoop won’t do you much good; however, if you’re the kind of student who didn’t need Shmoop because your outlines were so comprehensive and your analysis was so on point, then you can do good for Shmoop. They need really smart people to help them improve their service and move out of beta. If you look at the listing of jobs at Shmoop, you’ll see that these aren’t the typical opportunities that you’ll see from a Silicon Valley startup. Ok, they have the standard openings for PHP and/or Python Rock Stars (in Sunnyvale, CA) to help them build the software side of their product, but they also need brilliant English, Literature, and History majors to help them build the content side. They also need Editors and Spanish language translators. These positions can be full or part-time, you can do them wherever you want (location flexible), and the hours will be at your discretion. Does it get better than that? Who would have thought that English and History majors could score jobs at a Silicon Valley startup?

Not sold yet? Here’s what Shmoop has to say about themselves: “We move quickly. We debate passionately. We obsess over grammar. We quiz each other on literature and history. We chow on Specialty’s cookies. We dream of better ways to make learning fun and relevant.” If you think Shmoop is a game changing educational tool and you want to be a part of it, then send a resume and cover letter to jobs@shmoop.com.

Just by looking at their name, you can tell that Red Ventures was founded after the Cold War ended. Their name may sound like a secret name for the Communist party, but their 3 year revenue growth of almost 6,000% is anything but Marxist. They’re taking advantage of the free market as one of the 25 fastest growing privately held companies in the country according to Inc. Magazine. They’re in the business of Customer Acquisition Marketing, and they work specifically in the areas of Home Services, Consumer Services, Business Services, Automotive, Home Remodeling, Financial Services, Education, and International (help us with reader acquisition, and enter to win an iPod Touch from us). With their rapid growth they seem to keep adding employees, and their benefits look way better than Socialism could ever offer.

Go Red

In a lot of ways, Red Ventures looks like many other interactive marketing agencies, but they’ve taken a very different approach to their business. Instead of having clients pay them to do their with marketing, Red Ventures has taken on the role of a dealer instead of an agency. That means that they actually sell the products of their clients, but they use their own in-house agency to do all of the marketing work. It’s a cool business model, and it opens Red Ventures up to both the risks and rewards of customer acquisition. They may forgo the safety of steady income from clients, but they see all of the upside when they hit one out of the park. Founders Ric Elias and Dan Feldstein started Red Ventures with the goal of building a company that they’d want to work for, and now, hopefully, it’s a company that you want to work for.

They have quite a few job openings at their Charlotte, NC, and many of them look like great opportunities for new and recent college graduates. These include SEO Specialist, Software Developer/Business Analyst, Paid Search Marketing Analyst, and Workforce Operations Analyst. There’s also an
Entry Level Regional Field Sales Representative or the Northern California region.

Red Ventures also has quite a few Sales jobs, but we’re not sure that they’re the types of jobs that our readers will be interested. Some examples are Inside Sales Professional, Advertising Sales Representative, Inside Sales Security Consultant, and Bilingual (English/French-Canadian) Security Choice Sales Consultant. They also have opportunities in Miami, FL; Dallas, TX; New York, NY; San Juan, PR; and Guatemala City, Guatemala. You can find more jobs like these along with all of Red Ventures jobs listings on their Careers page, and you can apply through their online application form. They provide a ton of information about what it’s like to work for them on their website, so be sure to check out the links below.

Shopping is supposed to be social. When you were a teenager, you probably liked to hit the mall with friends. Now, you probably lie in bed late at night surfing web sites looking for cool stuff to buy. It’s just not the same. You need social proof to back up your buying decisions. You want to hear what other people think. You want reviews, stories, and answers to questions that you may have about a product or service. Bazaarvoice is a software as a service provider that promotes social commerce by connecting customers to each other. They get their name from the word “bazaar, ” which “symbolizes the beginning of commerce – the initial marketplaces… lively centers of town, buzzing with neighbors, friends and merchants all sharing opinions and building a vibrant community.” That’s what Bazaarvoice is trying to recreate online for their clients.

Bazaar Entry Level Jobs

Bazaarvoice has a number of platforms that they use to promote social commerce. These include Ratings & Reviews, Ask & Answer, Stories, SyndicateVoice, BrandVoice, and the SearchVoice Microsite. Take a look at each of these – you’ll get a much better idea of how a company that uses Bazaarvoice has a huge advantage when it comes to getting consumers engaged online. They have an amazing client list, so if you want to see Bazaarvoice’s software in action, just visiting one of their clients’ sites.

In the interest of full disclosure, Bazaarvoice is offering a referral bonus for all of their jobs and we’d be happy to receive a check from them. With that said, we think that they have some great product offerings, an amazing careers site, cool corporate culture, and jobs that look really exciting – that’s why we’re featuring them. We’ve identified a ton of jobs that look well suited for new college grads on Bazaarvoice’s Jobs site (which is seriously one of the top 10 of companies that we’ve featured). Before you look at the specific jobs, you should check out all of the media that they offer – YouTube videos, Flickr photos, a blog, and lots of text on what it’s like to work for them. They’ve been voted one of Austin’s Best Places to Work, and the image that they put forward on their site certainly backs that up.

Bazaarvoice has all kinds of jobs for people with all types of academic and experiential backgrounds. Not all of the jobs listed below are explicitly entry-level, but they all seem within reason for smart, high performing new college grads. Bazaarvoice is based in Austin, TX, and that’s where most of their jobs are located. These include:

Ever since we received an e-mail from a reader who was looking for help finding jobs that offer sponsorship, we’ve taken an added interest in helping international students in their job search. We published an article on job search tips for international students, and we try to make a note of it when we find jobs that offer sponsorship. Well, job search isn’t the only time international students face difficulties that most American students don’t. High school is tough enough for all of us, but international students have an even tougher time. They often face learning a new language while going through all the other typical high school struggles. The Internationals Network for Public Schools is a non-profit organization that is “dedicated to the development and support of the network of International High Schools that serve late-entry immigrant English Language Learners.”

Bilingual or English as a Second Language? Both!

Internationals Network for Public Schools is a non-profit organ It all started in 1985 with the launch of the first New York City International High School, a joint venture between the NYC Department of Education and LaGuardia Community College. As more International High Schools popped up across the city, an informal organization called the Internationals Schools Partnership was formed to help the schools share ideas and resources for teaching international students the English language. In 2004 funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation allowed this partnership to grow into the Internationals Network for Public Schools, which enhances the resources available to International High Schools with private money.

At the time of admission, all students in our network of New York City public high schools have been in the United States for less than four years and score at the lowest levels on an English language assessment test. Our students come from 90 countries, speak 55 languages, and live in low-income households: between 71-92 percent are eligible for free meals. In New York City, this student populations average four-year graduation rate is only 26 percent. The International High Schools average four-year graduation rate is more than double: 73 percent. More than 90% of our graduates matriculate to college.

The Internationals Network for Public Schools program addresses these issues through a hybridization of bilingual and English as a Second Language education techniques. There are currently 8 public high schools in NYC that are part of the Internationals Network for Public Schools; however, the organization is aiming for national expansion over the next 5 years.

Looking for a Few Good Teachers

Although Internationals Network for Public Schools is working in conjunction with the New York City Teaching Fellows, the hiring of Teacher Apprentices appears to be done outside the program. Internationals Network for Public Schools calls their alternative certification program ISTART.

In the first year of the program, you will serve as an apprentice in an International High School, engage in project-based coursework at the school level, and participate in seminars led by experienced Internationals and LIU faculty. You will receive health benefits and a stipend of approximately $28,000. During the second year of the program, you will assume full teaching responsibilities and, likewise, receive a full teachers salary. At the conclusion of the two-year program, you will receive New York State certification in and a Masters degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL).

The full job description can be found here. If you have excellent language skills and would love to make a difference in the lives of international high school students, there couldn’t be a program better suited to your interests. Use the links below to find out more about the Internationals Network for Public Schools. They still have openings for the 2008-2009 school year!

One thing that we couldn’t figure out is if Internationals Network for Public Schools sponsors international students for their jobs. If anyone knows, please leave a comment. We’re not sure how that would work in regards to the jobs’ being in public schools.

It’s your biggest fear. You’ll graduate college, get a job, and begin life as Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Every day will be the same. Different. But the same. Hell on Earth will begin at 22 years old. We don’t want that to happen to you. That’s why we write about a new and exciting company’s entry-level jobs every day. Today’s “job” isn’t much of a job, but you have to forgive us for celebrating one of our favorite holidays. So, if you’re not interested in becoming part of the inner circle of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, take a look at our Past Jobs or our Online Job Search Blog and start formulating a plan so you don’t end up trapped like Bill Murray. On the other hand, if you’re interested in wearing a stove pipe hat and handling rodents on cold February mornings, read on.

By the time this is posted, Punxsutawney Phil will already have determined whether we’ll be seeing an early Spring or not. Since I have the blog set to auto-post this, and I’m on my way to Costa Rica to fly fish for sailfish right now, I don’t immediately care about when Spring comes, but when I return, I’ll sure be hoping that Phil didn’t see his shadow. With that said, it appears that the inner circle of the club is a more “mature” group of men (no ladies, maybe you can be the first!) who are nearing retirement age, so we figure they need to recruit fresh blood. The good news is that becoming a member of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club is as easy as paying a $10 annual membership fee. Don’t you wish getting a job were that easy? Maybe it will be, joining a club is what we call networking.

Now the Punxutawney Groundhog Club is a non-profit organization that is clearly geared toward maintaining tradition and developing commerce in the Punxsutawney, PA area. They aren’t actually hiring, and we don’t think they even have jobs, but you never know. If you really love groundhogs, have great animal care skills, or look great in a top hat, you might be able to convince them to create a job for you.

One last note: the only requirement for jobs at the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club is that you are bilingual (at least if you ever want to be President of the Inner Circle). You must speak “Groundhogese.”

Note: On April 27th we revisited entry-level jobs at Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

We have exciting news today at One Day, One Job! We’re offering you the chance to win this year’s hottest holiday gift, a Nintendo Wii, by sharing One Day, One Job with your job searching friends. If you want to win a Wii, visit our contest page and read the rules on how you can enter.

Since we think giving away a Wii is the best way to bribe you into becoming a One Day, One Job evangelist, we thought it would be appropriate to take a brief look at the jobs that Nintendo is offering at the entry-level. We’ve been working really hard putting together this contest for you, so we’re going to leave most of the research on Nintendo’s entry-level job opportunities up to you. You already know enough about the company, you grew up playing Mario. Here’s what to focus on…

Nintendo’s Jobs page is a list of jobs and nothing more. The best fits for new college graduates come from a number of different areas in the company. Some of the more technical job openings include Design Engineer, Java Developer, and Associate Software Engineer. There are also a number of jobs that require bilingual skills, such as Bilingual Product Specialist (English/Latin American Spanish), Bilingual Product Specialist (English/French Canadian), and a contract position as a Technical Writer/Translator (Japanese or Spanish language).

There are also a few other positions that aren’t exactly geared towards new college graduates, but might be the right fit for you depending on your interests and experience. These include Channel Marketing Analyst, Product Testing Technician, and a contract position as a Audio Visual Editor.

Sorry for a short post today, but we’re making up for it by giving away a Wii. One last thing that you should do if you’re researching Nintendo’s career opportunities – Google the Regginator (aka Reggie Fils-Aime – Nintendo America’s President and COO).

Note: On April 22nd we revisited entry-level jobs at Nintendo.
